My dad is a University lecturer and he has a student this year with the surname A. She's an immigrant, as that surname would usually be illegal here.
I've had several students over the years who don't have any surname at all. Apparently the Australian immigration department's computers shit themselves at that and the operators have to repeat the first name(s) in to the surname box. Thus I get students like Boby Boby and Than Duc Than Duc.
