First of all, I just have to say, and I don't really want to go into a long and boring rant, that on the whole the design of OW4 looks rubbish. When I first saw Steef on the X-Factor trailor G-Xis posted I though, "Oh dear, that doesn't look tremendously impressive, or even particularly odd." In fact I likened it to a pretty commonplace cat/human hybrid that you'd see in something like Fighting Fantasy, although the way he ran from the Hunter intrigued me. Now I've seen these latest pictures (I haven't downloaded the entire video yet) and I'm pretty down in the dumps.

Ooh, knock me down with a feather, birds with dungarees. Blimey. Their houses too, while faring better on the Scale of Design, aren't very impressive. They look like barns, and not much else. Barns...chickens...hmm... And the boat, well, it's a longship. How else can you describe it?

*sigh*

I don't what the new Oddworld Inhabitants design team are trying to prove. Perhaps they want Farzad, Paul O'Connor and all the rest back as much as I do and are trying to provoke some responce from us. Joke conspiracy theories aside, I'm severly unimpressed by what I've seen. Except the name 'Steef', I like that.

Calm down Max, we have only seen a few very small clipits of footage. There is still over a year of development left. What I have seen, things look to be cooler and odder then ever. I don't know what your expecting, maybe you ambitions are way too high, give OWI some credit.

Well it seems like I missed a lot while I went to sleep. I think the hunter guy is probably my favorite new thing.

And Max, I understand a lot of what your saying with creativity, but remember what the official site said. Most of this new stuff from IGN is old, and from last september like the stuff in the DC program that will be on friday. The game possibly could have changed drastically from these original concepts. So yes, its good to have some oddworld information that is new, but technically it is new old news if that makes sense.

Now though Im waiting to get the latest if any on where they are since the original concepts from these vids.

I was going to say the same as Al when I read Max's post.

I mean, yeah I was also disapointed when I saw those chickens, and I tougt wath? all those designing about horce-gorilla and then lion to finally end on a human looking creature is just... well... I don't see the point of it

but it can change, it can have change

Calm down Max.
I was perfectly calm when I typed that, perhaps a bit sombre, but then that's not rare. But thanks for caring, anyway.

:
...remember what the official site said. Most of this new stuff from IGN is old, and from last september...
That's what I figured, but then I realised that they already seem to have made plenty of CG models and stuff. I really do hope they improve things, although my primary concern really is those awful looking chicken hillbillies (sp?). I guess you could say that, like Mudokons, they evolved from birds, which is fitting in an evolutionary overview of Oddworld, but that doesn't excuse the lack of originality in their design. But then, like you say, they may (and I practically pray that they will) improve the design. And indeed, all of the designs.

As for what I'm expecting. Well, I wasn't expecting anything at all, except I kept close to mind that OWI said that this game would make up for the inadequacies of MO. Now what EGM told us (a monkey/horse centaur who moves eggs via a sentient boat) sounds pretty nifty, and I'm not at all dissing the storyline. That's esentially because I don't know it yet, but then the basic storyline in MO was alright, if a bit haphazard (interesting enough at the start and end, but almost nothing going on in the middle part). Of course my main gripes with MO were the cartoon-iness of it and the apparently rushed gameplay. Again, we don't know anything about either of them for OW4, but if they're patched up I'm willing to overlook the poor design on this occasion. Time will, as it often metaphorically does, tell.

I'm going to watch the video now.

Seen it. Steef doesn't look too bad, actually. Did anyone else notice that there were Vykkers on Raymond Swanland's design board? It seems as though they might be involved. Kind of ironic for me, because I consider Vykkers to be the oddest-designer things on Oddworld - odder even than Scrabs and Paramites. I love them in that respect, so I've got no idea what it's going to be like watching them next to the chickens, lol.

Well , I prefer the production drawings, that we can see in the video, but I think that Steef has a great design, and a big potential how a character.

P.D: I don't know that Farzad and the others leave off from OWI.....What a PITY!!!!!?????

I never said I dont see potential in the design. I also said that Steef is very cool looking so far. I just stated that the designs are probably different since they are in the sense almost a year old. Never the less Im glad right now the information we have. And am excited now to see what else will be in the DC program on Friday.

'Leave' on its own, I think, would be too passive a word. I won't say anything else, because it's only rumours...

Hmm... this looks like it might possibly be in-engine. Notice how the two creature's clothes are part of the overall texture, and how unsmooth the edges are. MO's CG characters were smooth as butter, and they always contribute polygons to clothing. It might just be an early CG movie, but it sure would be sweet if the graphics are that good. I doubt the backround is in-game though.

I just think we should be more pleased and not so critical of such early concepts.

I don't think there is any doubt there will be vykkers. Why else would they be with Steef's concept art?

I wouldn't want the design of Steef to change, he looks so damn cool at the moment. I know what you mean about those chicken things though they do look like something off a final fantsy game.

Did any of you notice that on the vid clip there are production pics of steef talking to a vykker, i think steef might be someone who hunts creatures for the vykkers to perform their experiments on!

I can't wait for this game

I don't think its that bad. The two characters don't seem that bad. The two Birds look vaguely Mudokonish...what with the lil' pony-tail thing...

I think they're somewhat bad, well, working for bad people...or...something. But yeh, the hillbilly thing is vaguely un-original. I don't think they're going to be the creatures in need of rescuing though...

People are saying he's like Crocodile Dundee, but in that webpage thing it mentions he's like one part Clint Eastwood, indicating he's more of a Cowboy-Western peep...

My theory is that Steef did something naughty to the Cartel and that's why Ugly was shooting at him in the vid clip. But he did look like someone from the Mag at on point of his life.

Yeh the pic of the chicken has got to be in game, comapre it to the other pic ( Steef getting shot at ) which is CG.

If it is in game then they have definetly improved the game engine from Munch

I dont really see this. These creatures look very different than Mudokons. I would have to pluck one and see it without feathers to get a final comparison though.

wow, I come back and these is all this talk over a new game. I know that Farzad left, but this is still a far cry from the oddities we're used to, SO FAR anyway. I support OWI in all their ventures, but this seems even more childish than the other games. Aside from being a bit disappointed, I'm excited about new information about OWI's next release. Oh, and Steef's hat is delightfully bizarre.

oh yes, and am I the only one not able to play the video?

I to, like Max and the others was rather disapointed when I saw the Bird-like Hillbillies. I did, however, like the Steef design and am wounder what new idea's OWI has in store for us. Aside from the chicken thing I have a great trust in OWI and hope that they somehow have given this thing alot of thought.

As I like to say "There is great potental in anything and everything, as long as you look for it" and who know's, this chicken thing just might turn out to be not half bad?

Oh and Mr.Boji, if you have quicktime try coppying the quicktime address in the other post about the video (forgot its name) then go to the "file" bar then "open in new URL" or something and put in the URL. After that it should start downloading, but it'll be slo.

You never know, Boj. With the Mag Cart (trying to) harvesting Mudokons, using slaves in the first place, and Vykkers preforming open-lung surgery and installing head plugs in unsuspecting Gabbits, we might just see one (if not more) of thoes birds bein' plucked, cooked and sold to happy, drooling Khanzumers everywhere.

You might get your chance.

What is wrong with you guys? We see one picture of two chicken-like creatures, that don't look half bad and everybody is already jumping down OWI back. If you people are expecting the greatest, most original game ever, you may just be disapointed. What is going to happen when they release the next screens? As of now, we know one thing: the main character, nothing more. I recommend you guys wait until we get some real info, before you judge the game. Isn't gameplay the thing that matters anyway? Don't worry OWI will please the fans with this one.

I agree with you totaly Mojo, but I've gotta admit that the chicken things don't look to appealing. Other than that I belive that OWI's next game will still be great even if it had the most awefull, horrible idea/charature/storyling/etc in it.

I agree with mojoman. So far that's only 2 new species/characters confirmed. You should wait until you have tried the game, or at least gotten the complete story synopsis before you decided to turn your backs. Remember, this is only extremely limited pre-release publicity. We should be glad that OI has given us as much info as it has. At least the barrier of secrecy is starting to peel away at the edges, and we have at least a little idea of what to expect. Sorry if I sound rude, it just bothers me that some of us aren't being as appriciative of OI as we could be.
