Conzuma-san and sodd-san made good points.
I think their is a threefold combination of reason's for Munch's Oddysee coming out how it did:

-It being a launch title for a brand new next-gen console so close to the gift-giving season of course many kids in America will be getting them as presents (including this big kid right here) and maybe a latent reason for it's comparative easiness to past games is because the fear of turning off players who might have difficulty with slightly harder games.

-The rush to be a launch title is an obvious yet good reason.

-The console switch and all the problems that entails added to it as well.

------------------

As far as "potty-humor", I would like to know what specifically everybody is talking about. Personally I enjoyed the scenerios of Abe's Exodduss and thought they had the same devious-cleverness of Abe's Oddysee. In fact overall I enjoyed AE a bit more because of the gameplay improvements AND the story elements. I've only played through the game once successfully (it's hard for me) but i've watched the movie's dozens of times. The FMV's are my FAVORITE part of Oddworld and the game is the bonus.

Hopefully when/if a movie is released it will be true to it's roots (unlike the other big franchise CG movie Sci-fi story semi-crap...and I love that series too!)

Well I think i've gone off topic and have been longwinded enough in this topic for one night (week ).

Peace

Please don't anyone get me wrong I love oddworld and to be honest I actually owned AO for about five months before I got the courage to play it through. I't seemed to be very difficult and that may have something to do with the changes to MO but once I got started I could not stop I played it through and saved every one then I played it through and killed every one as soon as I was through I ran out and purchased AE and did the same I was addicted and after I finished AE I suffered serious withdrawls waiting for MO I stood in line for eight hours to purchase my X-Box and MO I expected to see AO and AE with new and exciting adventures but I got Mario Bros. you know collect x widgets etc. as posted previously. I have to pay to posess? most of the puzzles are run as fast as you can through a maze kill all the creatures in your way etc. In other Odd games if it said something on the wall such as "give your dog a bone" it meant something. By the way anybody notice that Abe lost a finger between AO and AE? I think that Microsoft should realize that probably 75% of thier sales can be initially atributed to the first two games in this series appologize for this attempt to get a younger audience for Abe and announce plans to do it the way it should have been done in the first place. And officially I could care less about the Sobe thing. 'cause in real life vending machines don't give product for free.

Hello P O'Conner... there seems to be a bit of confusion with the name that you have chosen here. I know you said that you are not the Paul O'Connor from Oddworld Inhabitants... but I'm sure there are people here that would overlook the fact that you have said this already.

I just want to try an clarify for everyone that P O'Conner here is not from Oddworld Inhabitants and I have no reason why he chose this name (perhaps a clarifiction of why may be in order).

On another note ... I just want to pass onto everyone that Paul O'Connor himself asked me to pass on his best wishes to all here at Oddworld Forums.

Abe Babe...

I can answer this one as it actually has something to do with my name.

Back in the day in Japan the butchers would sometimes cut off a finger and I'm not completely sure but it also may be considered a sign of low-class...anyhoo, whatever the reason in Japan it is taboo to depict characters with four fingers. Five are good, three are fine, but four is bad.

Thus when Oddworld was released in Japan on the PC, OWI had to slice one of Abe's fingers to conform.

BTW Abe's Oddysee in Japan is called Abe-A-GoGo. The romanji of the katakana would be EIBu A GoU GoU and because of my connection to Japanese that is why I chose Eibu and my sig simply translates "Four Fingers are Bad". Also Abe's Exoddus is called Abe '99 in Japan.

Thanx, I guess I will clairify this thing with my name I didn't choose P O'conner my parents did. Pete O'conner is my name and I thought it was kinda' cool than I could have a sign-on that was pretty close to Paul O'connor. So there.

I think I know what Sodd meant by "Potty Humour", although that isn't the term I would use for it ["Bad Humour" suits it more]. I think he's referring to the tacky jokes that permeated AE. Examples:

The end of the poem in the intro FMV - "Mudokon Nation be doomed to croak" - After the fantastic rhyming in the AO FMVs, I expected better than this cheap attempt at humour

When the weirdos came to Abe the second time - Abe: "Guys, Weirdos, Whoever you are!" - Ugh... Just ugh...

Hmm... I can't remember any more offhand, but I may as well throw in "Abe's New Voice" - Not exactly meant to be funny, but an example of the new, sanitised, 'user-friendly' Oddworld.

Eek, I sound very OW-phobic... Sorry about that, it's just that once I start a rant, I find it difficult to stop...

Asou, domo Rettick-san...

Hmm, well none of those things bothered me...it seems many take Abe's Oddysee as the definitive for what being "Oddworldish" is and I don't do that. Maybe I don't take it "as serious" but even though the games represent real problems I've always taken them with lightheartedness and have enjoyed every incarnation. Like i've said before who's to say what "Oddworld" is other than it's creators.

Damnit, I start ranting too...just repeating myself but anyway thanks for clarifying for me. Peace

I think this one has died. My own personal feelings are, see if I can get some money out of this XBOX on Ebay before the holiday so I can get a game cube, because if I am going to spend my money on "Mario" type games I might as well buy Mario. I just don't see any innovative games (like AO & AE) on Xbox. At least I didn't waste my money on a sony because I see zero creativity on Playstation. 3D existed before on the Nintendo and it was really no great thing ( compared to AO & AE) but we already played Spyro. There is no escape from what the mainstream opininion wants. So how about another round of 007 shoot 'em up kill 'em all and lets just get this damn individuality out of your head. Bring on the sword and box and fightn games and let's just lay Abe to rest.
