You know you can turn automatic updates off, right? Besides, you'd just have to install the updates manually another time. There's nothing wrong with keeping up to date.
Updates that are too big and too frequent are not a good idea. I'm all for up to date systems, but when the update functionality added is nothing compared to what it takes to update, something's broken within (I.e. you have to wait 2-12 minutes every time you launch Steam), something wrong with the system.

I have no idea what you're talking about, but Steam for me opens within a minute every time, and I've never noticed it automatically downloading anything except game updates.

If you have a half decent internet connection it should only take you 5 seconds to launch and for games like Oddworld you might see an update maybe once a year (or not at all), plus those updates would be rather small <10MBs.

I'm talking about the updates to Steam itself, not the game. The game updates are reasonable. Also I only have 2.5 MbPS download connection (320KBPS download speed) because decent speeds are still insanely expensive here due to a crappy duopoly of Internet infrastructure providers, greedy ISPs and crappy politics. (Some good changes are going on though, and this slow nightmare will end in the next few years hopefully)

But anyway, as someone who doesn't use Steam quite often (Once a month or so, but that'll change in a few hours :P) I find it very annoying to have a client update every time I run it, it usually takes 5 minutes to download (I don't remember the size, but either it's too big for a minor update of a relatively small application, or their update servers are WAY too slow), and I don't plan to do anything with the client other than launching a game.

You can't complain about Steam taking a long time to update if you only run it once a month, and you can't blame Steam for your crappy connection.

Of course not, these only make things worse. The issues are:

-Why do they force people to update their clients when they only want to launch a game?

-Why are updates so big? Even with my 320KBPS connection a minor update to such a software shouldn't take that long. Something's probably wrong with their update mechanism.

Don't get me wrong, I think Steam's great, but it's the little things that get people annoyed.

You're complaining about update sizes on a digital download service where people regularly download 10, 20, even 30gb games. I understand your pain being stuck with a slow internet connection, but a service like Steam by its very nature is designed for faster connections.

Actually I'm happy with the download speed for games, and even game updates (Since you can still play while updating, so it's virtually irrelevant). It's still faster and more efficient than actually getting to a store and buying it. The problem is the waiting time for each "playing session". People don't want to wait when there's no a good enough reason to. not 10 not 5 and not even one minute. I'm not even sure why the updates are so slow here, everything else I download at Steam is very faster considering my connection, I'll pay more attention next time it updates. But anyway, it's off topic.

Don't hold your breath. Steam has a very, VERY bad track record when it comes to releasing new games on time. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't released until like 3 PM EST tomorrow.

Hopefully that won't happen though!!!

It's Valve we'll be waiting for New year. Just joking I'm so excited to replay all the games from start to finish.

Man screw updating [software name], it takes like a minute to download and I just can't wait that long to [use software function]!

Steam seriously doesn't take that long to download and install updates, and if people are willing to wait however long for a full game to download a couple of megabytes of update isn't going to stop them.

Jesus, lay off LIJI. He's entitled to his opinion. Personally, I would also prefer a game service that didn't require a whole client just to launch a game, but there we go.

It ain't 6pm GMT yet that's why :P I'm glad I have a 20mbps connection at this point, I wonder how big the game is

And as for anyone bashing steam.. I don't see what your issue is, you don't need to screw around with cds/dvd's and if you stick your steam install on an external drive you have portable games with no reinstalling or other messing around.

Also if you are less tech savvy and don't know how to install updates and patches and things then no need to worry since steam ensures your game is 100% up to date. So if Stranger or Much has some weird annoying bug then its simple for JAW to fix it and have you auto updated.. if it was on a CD you'd have to google around for a patch and do it manually / keep checking for when its fixed.

I'll wait for some reviews before I buy Stranger's Wrath. Won't bother with MO since I have that already and thought it was average :P

I'll be purchasing the whole damn thing. I don't really care that I have them all, I want them on Steam as well, just in case I lose the CDs or something. That and I feel it is worth purchasing all of them over again just to play MO and SW on a PC.
