Time Heist was the best written episode of the series so far. Fight me.
There are lots of things I don't like about this series, and it mostly just comes down to execution. I love that Moffat's trying exciting new things, but at the end of the day the writing just isn't pulling it together for me.
Take Listen. There were really great things in that episode, but on the whole I just couldn't get into it. The bedroom scene with the thing under the sheet was well done. Everything up until there was running pretty smoothly. But then nothing really happened. They had to tie back into the overarching Danny-Clara story, because the possibly-nonexistent monster was just so boring. I like the idea, but id just didn't execute well. There was no problem. There was no solution. They just kind of did things and talked for 45 minutes of my life.
The last episode definitely was everything I hate about the series so far, though. Here's my revised plot synopsis after watching it this morning -
"Clara struggles to find a balance between her life as a time traveler and her boyfriend, which is only complicated when The Doctor goes undercover at her school. There's a killer robot on the loose, but the bigger question on everyone's mind is what The Doctor will think of Danny."
The robot got 5 minutes of screen time, and was a bland killbot until Danny finally Saved the Day and concluded the real plot, which was about the social interactions of our 3 musketeers.
I really like that Moffat is trying to do more with the show than the "Monster of the Week" format that we're used to, but there's just not enough supporting his ideas to keep me watching at the moment. I'm bored of "The Clara Oswald Saturday Night Drama Show". I'm finding her more irritating than Amy Pond.
Also, on the topic of pacing and episode structure, is anyone else finding that the episodes take far too long to actually unfold the premise into a plot? I enjoyed most of the Robin Hood episode, but the last 10-15 minutes of ROBOTS BUILDING SPACESHIP BUT NOT ENOUGH GOLD SO EXPLOSIONS could have easily been the problem they were overcoming for the entire episode. Instead we had The Doctor quibbling and not really achieving anything for 30 minutes. I'm all for character development, but again it was a situation where the plot was about The Doctor and Robin Hood not being able to get along, and the evil robot menace was secondary.
But I can see why people are enjoying them.
