It's the Hebrew word 'Chai' (pronounced like the 'ch' in 'loch') in an unusual scripty font -

this are what it normally looks like. Chai means 'life' and if the letters are switched it becomes the number 18, which is why 18 and multiples thereof are often used in Judaism. For instance, at my bar mitzvah, almost all the cash/book voucher gifts were in multiples of 18.

Not really. The river cut down in to a flat plain. The surfaces on both sides of the canyon are completely featureless for miles in either direction.

It's mind-bogglingly huge. At first my mind couldn't even comprehend how massive it was. Not quite as colourful as I was expecting, though.
