Forum Downtime

Well, I guess most members would have noticed the lengthy forums downtime. I or Abe Babe would be happy to answer any questions you have about it. I'm sure there are many questions, I've been asked a lot already.

Why don't we make sure the forums can be backedup with ease next time It would have been much easier if we could have just put it all onto our machines from the beginning, you know

Well it happened at a bad time, the server has limited some of the things we can do. The option in vB to download the database is good when the database is small. But our database is HUGE! And so it times out, the only proper way to do it is through telnet. The problem being that we couldn't get access to telnet, or it isn't enabled.

I think that this will prove a lesson to us, and will come about us making an easier way to backup the database through telnet. So that it shouldn't take more than an hour or so depending on the database size.

It also depends on when our next server threat occurs, which I hope doesn't, of course.

This forum became yesterday that someone is likely to hack.
Alcar and Majic_Abe backed up a vast quantity of data of this forum. Probably by two persons' favor, I think that data was protected.

Actualy, our attempt was quite a failure... The reasons the forums are back up now is becuase they were upgraded, and Abe Babe was able to back up the whole of it.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd like to share a funny story that occured because of this all.

After I had gone to my fathers work to back up the database, we hopped into the car and drove home. We arrived home at 3am. And realised that the keys to get in were in the house!

We didn't want to wake anyone up, some we slept in the car. It would have been okay, except my cat (Puss) kept scratching the windows, licking the mirrors and walking over the car making noises kept me awake. I think I got at least 10 minutes sleep. The nit was time to climb up and knock loudly on my sisters bedroom window beckoning to let us in!

It was *sniff* so fun.

Now i'll have to correct Majic_Abe
It was a success, except we could not backup 3 tables, 2 of them were important. Other than that, it was all good!

Ah, so it was only the things that I tried to download that didn't work? O well, it was a nice thought having the main part of the forums saved onto my hard drive

See what happens ... whenever I go offline for a couple of days (I have been out for most of the part two days due to my football team being in the AFL Grand Final). We did get a lot of the data down and as you can see we have upgraded to the latest version of vBulletin.

When we can get in contact with Justin we will arrange more backup procedures (I think we were running a weekly backup, but Justin will need to confirm this one). I also couldn't log directly onto the server like I have been able to do in the past, if I was able to I could have backed up that way.

Thats alot like the board my borther visits does, backups on some schedual.

This actauly reminds me of a funny story there. One time the server crashed, and they hadn't backed up for 5 days. My brotehr said there was alot of confusion, it is a large board after all.

A member threatened to hack the server if he/she wasn't promoted to Administrator. I decided to back up the forums immediately, and Majic_Abe aided me with some of the larger files because he was nearer to the server!

This won't affect you. Unless you were online in the past half a day, then you would of had no access to the forums while the back ups were being made.

Whether the threats are to be believed or not is up to the induvidual. Either way, things like this are always taken seriously even if they are only a joke, as you just don't want to take any chances.

So anyways, why haven't we been hacked yet? I thought Robin was like some 1337 20 year old who was always right, was super cool, never lied, had a life, and was going to hack us...

Makes you wonder.

Maybe he hasn't hacked us, I know that there are a lot of threats to hack servers but not all happen.

Or maybe he tried, and the server had too many security precautions or less loop holes to get through.

Who knows.

Seems again I take a small vacation up north to wisconsin, and I come back, and another problem happens, oh well good handeling of the situation guys, sorry I wasnt able to aid you, but I think my weekend vacation did some good calming my mind off of all the stuff going on at school and at home. So sorry for my absence but I think it was well needed.
