Oddworld Inhabitants is literally just a money laundering scheme at this point. I'm glad our reward as fans is that we finally get to suck that corporate dick that Lorne has been warning us about for all these years.

A few people on here have suggested over the years that I am not critical enough of OWI, and that perhaps I look at the actions of the company through rose tinted glasses too often. Whilst I understand that OWI needs more funding to finish Soulstorm, this is an exceedingly disappointing development. I won't be playing the game on the PC and even I'm sitting here wondering what possessed this move, it seems to be so far detached from the company's ethos.

I'm pretty sure the antagonists of every single main Oddworld game (+ Stranger's Wrath) were undoubtedly corporate.

Owi keeps making those strange decisions. Like the ones already mentioned, but also the switch to Xbox. And yet, their games always find a way into my home. Either invest in a new console or stream account or whatever, or wait until the exclusivity period is over.

Do they do this on purpose, or are they some sort of naive mudokons themselves? I do believe Lorne really tries to make a great game. Bummer that the proces always seems to be with a lot of bends, hurdles, a bit of selling out, and upsetting a fan or two.

Actually I don't mind...

yeah i dislike any type of exclusivity. seems like a sort of 'elitist' thing to do, and that bugs me.

That doesn't make OWI as a developer any more anti-corporate any more than having an evil doctor as the villain of the Crash games makes Naughty Dog anti-vax.
Also keep in mind that we've seen very little of the full story of the Quintology so far, and OWI have hinted many times that it's nowhere near as simple as "native good, industrial bad".
Anyway I'm not saying this is a good move from OWI at all, and it's totally understandable if you're disappointed, just certain people are blowing it out of proportion.

Hilarious that you would assume that I'd "buy" anything from OWI again. "Hey just buy this significantly downgraded version for the same price, you can still fund shitty business practices even if you don't want to directly!"

This is a very borked metaphor. Having an evil doctor as the villain doesn't really have anything to do with vaccines at all.
This would be a much more apt analogy if the CEO of Naughty Dog was an anti-vaxxer who regularly has vaccinations and has distributed his game through a vaccination company.

I mean Lorne's not really anti-capitalism if you listen to interviews with him. Particularly as he plays the entertainment product game. Perhaps he doesn't buy into Epic Game Store fraud/immoral practices/spyware stuff or a lot of the anti-Epic rhetoric? I mean he went Microsoft exclusive, put SoBe in his game, promoted other indies in NnT. Oddworld puts a light on how corporations and excessive greed is literally destroying and exploiting our planet and its indigenous populations for the sake of pure profit. I don't think whatever anti-consumer story you wanna ring outta the Epic debate really touches that. Seems like small potatoes crap and clearly Lorne isn't into it that much.

I mean, I guess? fuck I dunno the guy.

But you’re not wrong. As you say, Lanning was never anti-consumerism; he was anti-exploitation. Hence why the argument about the billboards in NNT being against the “Oddworld philosophy” was about as air-tight as a screen door with holes in it.

That being said, I trust Lanning about as far as I can throw him. He’s a great talker, but at the end of the day, he’s a businessman. Whether or not he’s lying through his teeth half the time, or is simply far too idealistic, I’ve accepted that he probably would have been better off becoming a politician than a storyteller.
