Idea Abe HD - to be modded?

A level editor, multiplayer addition (even online).
Would that be legitimate?

I always yearned for multiplayer in Abraham games and would work hard to accomplish this. Though, it may be not legitimate to spread the modded version.

Highly doubt it, the engine looks way too complex for modding, and besides I think they even said before it would be too difficult for the average person to manipulate and make the levels.

Plus, it's a lot of work for them just to make it open ended for people to mod it in the first place, think about the work you'd have to put in for not only making the 3D level architecture, you'd also be working with the camera movement and stuff.

Well, if you know the engine, then it is extremely primitive, but takes a huge time to place all the models in the right places. But small changes and object moving/replacing is swift.

Why would you want to move the camera in other ways than it is pre-defined? Even if you want, it is not really that complex, you must have a solid experience and that may be a problem. I seem to understand it.

Do they have their own engine or is it a popular one (like Unity, Unreal (if so, that would be extremely simple).

They may threaten us with hardships to prevent piracy. That is right to do, but not right actually.

Remember, that every game may be hacked.

You can't really say what is and isn't simple with it, we won't have the actual source code to play around with.

Of course. But there are various hacking programs to extract/import data.

Zero chance. They are trying to push the game out asap, the last thing they want to do is delay it even more by putting in modding support and multiplayer.

And even to wish it in the future is highly optimistic.

Since you're speculating it being so simple, could you please make an easy to use level editor within a month or two that it's out? Thanks in advance.

Mod support is not required for the that, only knowledge. I think, everyone here can program (a few exceptions).

It is even more challenging and fun to find exploits to mod without support.

But now it is "hacking".

Level editor? It is not simple at all. To edit levels is simple, when you know the engine. Reread my words.

Not a chance of a level editor in NnT and online mode is completely stupid for a game like this. However, depending on sales I would like to see a level/puzzle editor in the remake of Exoddus (which better be called 'Twice the Flavour').

Something like the puzzle editor in Portal 2, which allows you to make a puzzle in an easy to understand editor after which the software translates it to an actual level file.

Puzzle games inheritly need to be editable. We've been crying for it since AO came out and that wish is still there.

Online-mode could be just "an amusing thing" to kill each other, teleport to each other, etc. Nothing co-operating.

It is editing levels, not editor. I hardly believe, that someone, except for Paul/Liji is able to build an editor here. Editing levels can be done directly in data.

The only way to edit the levels in NnT would be (I think) to edit the source code in Unity, and that's something we won't have access to.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not a coder nor a game dev.

I would assume the levels aren't hard coded, but still, the amount of effort it would take to edit the level files wouldn't be worth anyone's time. As well as that you'd be limited to how the game is developed; they're not designing it to be modder-friendly, so the end result would be lots of restrictions on what is possible to edit or not.

We shall see.

Oh, I have the latest hacked version of Unity and have used it before for some noob shit. That is not a problem. We have access.

There may be a special file encoding, which is impossible to extract. That WOULD be a huge impediment.

Oddworld Modability

Hey there, I just wanted to put this here:
http://puu.sh/8sDtR/40a61961d2.png

I sent an email to Stewart few weeks ago, with questions about modability. Unfortunately he's not interested in making it editable, or accessible (.unity3D is hard to extract). And I really hoped for level editor, or at least some access to files, argh.

The upside of moving away from the construction-set style of the old ALIVE engine is that we can probably expect more interesting one-off setpieces.

Hey there, Strnadik welcome to the forums.

Thank you for sharing this with us. It's a pity, but as I wasn't going to mod it or play mods anyway I'm glad they are focusing on unique settings with a lot of character instead of making the game mod-able.

No level editor this time around. Not to say that it can't ever happen - It's something that would be possible in Unity, as Bithell is doing it in Volume - But I'm fairly certain the budget is stretched thin enough as it is.

Besides, AO was a whole lot more bespoke than people seem to think. You'd be more likely to see an editor of some kind for an AE remake, even if it's just a basic thing like in Portal 2 (though don't talk to me about Portal 2's terrible excuse for an "in game editor". The editor itself is OK if basic, but the way it does it's map compilation... ugh. Typical of lazy, lazy Valve to just have it do a 'fast' compile in the background rather than actually solve the problem.)

Who knows, someone might come up with a way to mod compiled Unity stuff somewhere in the future. It'd be cool to see how some of these games are built, even if it happens years from now.

Oh I am sorry, I didn't visit this thread since my last post. Thank you for the welcome! ^-^

I really hope they will at least make the unity-packed files a bit modable. I can make pretty neat models, textures, and if I see just one map from NnT in Unity Pro, I am sure I can make a new level. AO and AE wasn't really moddable too, but someone managed to make a level editor - It's complicated to work with it, but it's worth it. I would like the same with NnT. I am not demanding Little Big Planet-like editor, not at all. I am just hoping for a little access to files. Because Unity is known for user non-accessibility of files, they are just packed into a format you can't unpack. Well, I can't do anything but hope.

I don't think New 'n' Tasty will be hackable. I hope not anyway. Good games shouldn't bore people to the point of Modding or Hacking, as excited as I was for GTA V to release, I was bored very quickly, and started messing around with mods online. New 'n' Tasty will be very entertaining, I would replay it several times to look at more scenery, try the different endings etc. Maybe they will implement cheats... Idk

I definitely didn't mean to say it will be boring. But just look at.. for example Valve games. Portal, L4D, HL2. They are really entertaining games, but people want to make their own levels. It's not about boredom. It's about making it even more enjoyable with custom levels. Old AO and AE weren't boring either, but people still wanted to mod it really much, because the ability to make new stuff to your favourite game is just amazing. If NnT will have some way of modding itself, even the most unfriendly one, I will mod the f**k out of it, and make some new levels.

Anything is hackable.

I imagine there will be hacks/mods if it is popular. I'll probably play them all if it is popular enough to get people modding it.
