New 'n' Tasty vs. Abe Boxx on PSN

In the last couple of weeks, seeing more news about the reboot and E3, I got a wave of nostalgia for the games of my youth. I couldn't wait till July and downloaded the Abe Boxx (Oddysey and Exxodus) on my new PS Vita Slim.

I'm just curious what fans think of the PSN games and whether it's worth it to get the new one. Some people have posted on other forums that they like the screen tears on the old games, since there's a sense of foreboding not knowing what lurks on the next screen. Won't it alter the essence of Oddworld by changing this, with the side-scrolling?

Also, I find the graphics on the PSN versions to be really good. The gameplay is extremely difficult (as far as saving the Muds), so that will probably be an improvement for the reboot.

I sent an email a couple of weeks back to Oddworld Inhabitants and never got a response. They are obviously very busy with the reboot but it was disappointing not to hear back, given that they're supposed to be all about the fans.

Just curious what ya'll think....thanks!

...you're serious with that nickname?

Not to mention you've managed to spell the titles of both games wrong.

To answer your question: Yes, we all wait for NnT.

What's wrong with the name? No sense of humor in Poland, eh?

Gimme a break with the names spelling....they're tricky.

Just curious what *everyone* thinks of the current PSN games....would like more feedback.

I don't think you'll find any other opinions here: It's Oddworld Forums, everybody here loves/loved the original games, or else there wouldn't be any forum at all. As for NnT, we've got a ton of threads with posts with opinions about NnT. You can read through them all (not worth it), but they're mostly positive

LOL....fair enough. Will probably have to change my nick when Hilary wins in 2016

I know most people are looking forward to the new game, but curious if people think the Abe Boxx PSN games were a faithful port or whether the new game will be infinitely better. Mostly, I'm trying to determine if I should get the new game after I just bought the PSN versions.

The PSN (Vita) games are darn tough when it comes to saving all the Muds, but they're a lot of fun and very addictive.

Ok, thanks. I guess I don't remember too much about the originals cause I was just a kid then. But the PSN games are enjoyable. Guess I'll wait to see what the reax is to the new game, whether playing the current games is good enough for me, or whether getting the new one will be worth it.

You did - right at the edge of E3 when I had upwards of 200-300 emails to sort each day. Apologies for not replying yet.

I understand....I know it's a busy time right now.

NnT looks great....I just really wanted to jump back into the games now, so I bought the Abe Boxx last week for my Vita. I'll probably buy the new version to support JAW but I am just curious about the differences/enhancements to the original. The side scrolling will probably be the biggest change, as far as I can tell. I'm having a very tough time getting through Oddysee on the Vita but it's very addictive.

Well, New 'n' Tasty has three difficulty modes, so progress should be easier overall unless you're on Hard mode. More generous checkpoints and a quicksave/quickload should help too if needed.

Of course the originals will always be good, And Abe's Exoddus will remain my favorite video game for... well probably forever.

But I would without a doubt invest in New N Tasty.

That sounds great. I hope that helps in saving the Muds more effectively. I am able to progress through the current PSN VITA game of "Oddysee" but I have to play it pretty selfishly in order to succeed (that is, saving very few Muds and just advancing on....which seems to defeat the purpose) I want to save those poor souls!

The names can be tricky? You literally just put an odd pun in there.

Of course the remake is going to be worth getting. It's much of the original, but completely redone in a refreshing new way. It'll be a new experience, even if you've played the original.

The PS1 emulation on the PS3 is great. The PSN versions are 100% faithful to the originals.

I like the fact that in reading what Lorne has said, the game is not a pure 'remake' but a re-doing (a reboot, if you will) from the ground up. That has me optimistic about getting the new version and hoping it's a unique experience from the PSN game I just bought.

Good to know, thx! It was so long ago that I played the PS1 games, so I don't really remember. I do remember more playing Munch on the XBOX and enjoying that as well (but I gave up before completing it). I'm excited to read about a possible new version of Munch coming up as well.

I should also add (though this is probably off-topic), that the Oddworld games are PERFECT for the Vita, even moreso than the big consoles. There's something really claustrophobic and atmospheric about playing Oddworld on a portable. It makes the game stand out more. I wish the Vita had more of these amazing experiences.

It's the same damn thing. Remake = making again. Re-doing = doing again. The forum has already discussed what to call it though in way too much detail so I'm going to just drop it.

Also, nice double post.

And by the way, if you have issue with the whole 'remake' thing, take it up with Lorne, not me. HE is the one who says it's not a remake, so by disputing my comment, you dispute him as well.

I hope you're very proud of yourself.

Of all the dick behavior here this is the one I'm going to call out.

There are hundreds of more productive ways you could have said this. Multi-quoting is fucking complicated unless you copy and paste, and that can be counter-intuitive. Explain that double posting isn't allowed here. Be helpful to new members.

And for fuck's sake shut up about the name. This is OD, not a welcome thread.

Oh, gee. Lorne said that? I mean, wow. That changes everything. You should understand, Lorne is a god to us. The very implication that he may have made questionable decisions in his marketing fills us with frothing, bilious rage.

I apologize for my behavior earlier, this really isn't the place to dump my anger.

Sad

I feel I'm a bit late to respond to this, but I think if you bought the oddbox then that is great! You should definitely have the old copies if the game in any form in your ps3/vita/ps4.

And as for new & tasty, get that aswell! Anything to support the company of owi and jaw will help out other projects in the future, "like Abe's exxodu and fangus!"

Also don't ever take anything on this forum seriously, luckily I've never had buttons pushed on this forum, but I hope you have a long stay here, because this is the one forum that is welcome for all of the fans of OWI games.

Lorne had an issue with calling the game a "HD" remake. Since "HD" implies, to a lot of the gaming world, that all the remake is is a remastered version of the game - rather than a complete reworking from the ground up. And many may not feel it's worth the higher price.

It's more that we don't really want people thinking it's the same engine with a shiny coat of paint, when in reality it's an everything from scratch type affair.

Not a single actual part of the original Oddysee remains.

I think calling it originally Abe HD as a like it's code name might of given the idea that it's just a HD remake. Obviously that was a long time ago now, but people still search for and call New N Tasty, Abe HD.

Your probably already doing this but, All I think you need to do is make it so obvious to people that it's not just a HD remake by calling it a "Complete remaster" or "Entirely new game" based on the original.

Just been watching a couple of interviews of Lorne at E3 2014 and that is basically what he is saying in every single one of them.
