Oculus Rift

Just how Captain Kirk used to play.

I heard of this a while back but now that the release date is looming over us I'm getting a bit excited about it. Whether or not it'll be any good is left to be decided but it's a serious step up from that last abysmal attempt of futur gamingz. It even has Minecraft but I highly doubt anybody will pay extra dollars just to do all that mining in first person first person, although Hawken and Doom sounds pretty sweet.

Hawken e'rybody;

My only fear is that it won't deliver that in the cockpit feel, which is the only reason I'm considering buying it when it releases. Also in a desperate bid just incase le modders of the shiternet get Skyrim ported (well) to it.

Thoughts, anyone?

I think it's pretty cool. Only time will tell whether it becomes The Next Big Thing or just a flash in the pan like 3D monitors, though.

It looks awesome, I would love to try out Team Fortress 2 and Minecraft just to see how it's like. However I have a big feeling it will cause some serious eye-styrene...

Yeah, I've always wondered that about VR or anything that projects an image right in front of your eyes - Won't focusing on something like that for ages give you really bad eye strain after prolonged use?

Also I once played a 3D shooter on a projector screen which was close enough to fill my vision, and I got motion sickness. I wonder if you can get motion sickness from VR, or does the field of vision counter-act that? Maybe I should try it one day to find out.

Anyway, cool-looking tech if it gets off the ground. It being compatible with one or two currently popular games will probably help it a bit, but that goes without saying.

Sounds... gimmicky. Could be cool but I'm comfortable with just a monitor for now.

Also Hawken looks amazing.

I've played the beta. It looks better than it plays. It's not bad, though.

eye-styrene...
I'm giggling furiously at that. It wouldn't be as funny if styrene weren't a chemical that can damage eyes.

Seems like they thought of that.

:
Q:Will the Oculus Rift cause eye strain after extended use?

The Oculus Rift causes very little eye strain, particularly compared to other standard displays or headmounts.

Normally, when you take a break from using a monitor or TV, the idea is to give your eyes a chance to focus and converge on a distant plane. This is a natural position of rest for your eyes.

With the Oculus Rift, your eyes are actually focused and converged in the distance at all times. It’s a pretty neat optical feature.
Found right in their FAQ.

Interesting use of the Rift. This guy combined it with a gun tracking mod, then played Half-Life 2:
