Strangers Wrath HD FOV

Hello.

I just bought the Oddworld: Strangers Wrath HD game from gog.
It is the only Oddworld game I have ever played.
I am liking the odd/quirky world a lot.

But, there is one thing stopping me from playing for any length of time:
The FOV.

Is there any way to increase the fov?
I like 110 fov, and this game has a pretty low fov, making me nauseous if I play for more than 20 minutes at a time.

Thanks for any info.

Dave

Try options or hacking.

Wow.
What a dick.

Ask an innocent question, about a game I am LIKING, for me to enjoy the game MORE, and this is what I get?

Thanks.
You were very helpful.

Dear Gishygleb,

Don’t be such a prick.

To the OP, I haven’t come across a way to increase the FOV — it’s not a setting in the Options menu and it’s not in the config file.

Sorry, the spoiler didnt come up before. And, not a very nice pic to be posting in the first place.

And, there is no option for fov, only screen resolution (which I already have on native 1680x1050).

As for hacking, well, I dont know how to do that.
I looked in the config file, but there was nothing about fov in it.
I checked FlawlessWidescreen app, but it doesnt support this game.

Have done a google search, and havent found an answer.
Tried both gog and steam forums, and no answer there either.

Figured these were the official forums, and the devs might read this, and be able to let me know how to change the fov.

I really am liking the game. It reminds me of psychonauts, but with a western theme.
But, I would like to be able to change the fov.

Are you playing HD or SD version (it's impossible to change FOV in SD)?

Read this:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forum...t-1667059.html. Maybe, it'll help.

Seems, like FOV isn't customisable.

Yeah, that was one of the threads I had already looked at.

Is this the official forums?
Are there any developers in here, that worked on the game, that might be able to answer?
If not, I am afraid I am doomed to use the default fov.

It’s not an official forum. Some of the developers post here sometimes, but you’re more likely to catch them through the Steam forums.

OK

Thanks.

Edit:
If any devs stop by here, and know the fix, I would like to know, even if I play and finish the game.

Short answer is, you can't change it.

This being a 2005 console game, configurable FOV never figured into the code design. Hence, like many other graphics and controls settings that really ought to be alterable by PC gamers, FOV is hard coded into many aspects of the game.

So we could add a scale that brings the FOV in or pushes it out a bit, but then we risk destroying the framing. Stranger could disappear off the bottom of the screen in third-person, or his crossbow in first-person. These just aren't coded to rearrange to a variable FOV.

So I'm sorry to say you'll have to put up with the FOV. I hope it doesn't make you so nauseous that you can't complete the game. I'm glad you're otherwise enjoying Stanger HD so much.

Dave3d: I get terrible motion sickness from many FPSes. See if you can get ahold of these motion sickness pills. Try to get the 'natural' ginger ones, because they work well to settle my stomach and don't make me woozy like the chemically ones do.

Hello Wil.
Thanks for the answer.
I am enjoying the game.
I just cant play it for more than a little at a time.
But, I will get through it.
I had the same problem with Serious Sam 3 BFE, and that one had an fov changer. It was something to do with how they handled the layers in the game, I suspect (SS2 was the same, but the HD remakes were fine).
I will just play a little at a time though.
Loving the humor of the game.

@ Nate
Yeah, I have actually tried pills before.
They help with the nausea, but not the headaches.

When I start feeling dizzy, I just quit, until the next day, or I feel better. If I go beyond the dizzy stage, thats when I get nauseous and a headache.

Is this a very common issue? Because I never heard of anyone getting nauseous because of playing. I'm seriously asking, not just poking fun or anything like that.

Yes, it's very common. It's a similar issue to car sickness, but I actually get it much worse from games, particularly ones that are slightly jittery as you move the camera.

My uncle has never been able to play FPSs because of motion sickness. He'd struggled with Quake and Duke 3D, but Magic Carpet 2 was what really put him off. MC2 was just about enough to make anyone motion sick, mind you.

I have never had issues with older games at all.
It has only been the games from about 2005/6 and on.
Dunno why.
Maybe because thats when the fov's started shrinking, and the monitors started getting bigger?

Have you ever played a Magic Carpet game? If those don't make you motion sick then you have a very interesting issue.

Lower FOVs are much more eye-pleasing to me than overly high ones. No game gives me a headache more than 130 FOV Quake Live.

Perhaps it is to do with screen size, and that it gives you the feeling that you should be moving even though you aren't - I once got motion sickness playing Half-Life 2 on a projector screen that was about 4 or 5 meters away from me even though I've not experienced anything like that before, and play FPS games often.

Have you tried sitting way back from the monitor?

I cant sit way back from the monitor.
I can only sit back so far from the desk, and still reach kb/mouse (no, I dont use controllers).
:P

And, my monitor is only 1680x1050.
My work monitors are 1900x1200, and they dont make me sic (of course, I dont game on them either).

No, its mostly the artificial stuff they put into games nowadays, like head and weapon bobbing, dof, and smoothing. I have to turn all that stuff off to even begin to play.
Also, when there are 3 layers (background, foreground, weapon/player), and say only the background, or foreground scales correctly (say background is at 90fov, and foreground is at 70, and weapon/player model is at 60), that messes me up way badly too (I think this is the issue with the serious Sam 2/3 games).

LOTS of people have this issue, its not uncommon at all.
And, I have been gaming since Arcades (70's/80's).

Nowadays, include all that, with an fov that was made for players sitting 10 feet away on a couch (45-65 fov), then port that same game to pc and not touch anything (with the player 1 and a 1/2 feet from the monitor), and you have a lot of users affected.

I am not the only one that is affected by this.
Go to any popular forum (steam, example), and you will find lots of users affected by this.

Fortunately, I am getting used to this game though, and can play for longer periods now (even though I am only at the (3rd? 4th?) bounty guy.
Speaking of which, why am I writing this when I could be playing?

Hehehe

I've met people who puked their guts out after playing Portal. Try taking Dramamine. All the gamers in my house swear by it's ability to banish the nausea.

Magic Carpet is just too much. I didn't get motion sickness, but man, I did get a small headache...I usually don't get motion sickness, being in my car, a boat or a plane. 'I'm not used to FPSes, but when I usually play them, it doesn't differ much to me if I'm right in front of them or not. I've played Portal 2 in my PC and on my friends XBOX. I must be fucked up as hell...
