Happy AO/AE Remake

I want to remake AO/AE. It's not a mod or anything like that.
I just need your opinions.

(Click on image for high-res)


TODO:
-remaster all images
-change default resolution to 1024x768
-level redesign according to new resolution? (don't know anything about lvl format)

Thoughts:
1024x768 is optimal. There is no point in 800x600 or 1280x960
Executable uses DirectX function to change resolution.

I don't think the game could load 1024x768 images unless the code was seriously altered which we know is near impossible.

But I'm with Havoc on this one...

You would need to remake the game from scratch. If you have that much time and are prepared to put in the hard yards, I applaud your effort. Otherwise, I'll wait for JAW to finish Abe HD.


If you want more info, read the older threads in the Mods & Hacks subforum, where Paul (and others) discuss why it is impossible to tweak the old game.

Even if there was a way to change the native resolution, you'd have to do a lot more to the original graphics other than change their sizes and touch them up in Photoshop...

Correcto, the game uses a PS1 emulator, so the max vram size is 1024x512 or something crazy like that !

Thus the real res is 640x240 scaled to 640x480 (x2 640x240 buffers in emulated vram)

a few too many harsh words aimed at a guy who is only trying to create something new for everyone to play.

If you're looking at remaking the game rather than modding the existing engine (which as others have pointed out isn't really possible) then go for it, I would love to see a rebuilt version of 2D AO/AE.

@OP I would love to see you Remake Abe in HD, but it's a lot of work, and I don't think a good result is what will come of your efforts. It looks like you've just used some photoshop filters. What it would need is a good artist to touch the images up manually, maybe after using the filters. Otherwise it's likely to look like a blobby painting, defined outlines with no inner detail.

@Glitch .. all the different images of Abe are actually different (I think they are anyway). Which image are you aiming to replicate for the new games?

What I mean is that there is a distinct difference in Abe's appearance in Abe's Oddysee, Abe's Exoddus and Munch's Oddysee. Am I wrong? I might be wrong.. but the Abe face on the Oddysee cover looks long and sort of youthful, on the Exoddus cover he's all wrinkly with sagging cheak skin and a receding jaw. In Munch's Oddysee, his head looks like a peanut (In my eyes anyway, dunno about everyone elses)... Which look do you personally think is the true representation?

Correct me if this is all bullshit ^^

This is my opinion; i think if you are able to pull this off you have great talent, however, i don't think it will be worthwhile if you are just upgrading the resolution, a remake isn't just the same game but with slightly better visuals, thats an update, kind of like DLC, if you know what i mean, a remake is an entirely rebuilt game.

It's much harder to remake a 2D 4:3 in a 16:9 ratio. You'd have to redesign all levels and backgrounds.

If remaking AO/AE, it'd actually make more sense to make cross platform (Think mobile phones, tablets) rather than higher resolution, as you can't really make the graphics better without the original models, and JAW are already making an HD version of the Abe games. It wouldn't be much different than running the original game with filters applied in real time.
