i fucked up...

ok, i was trying to figure out a way to remove all background noise from AE so i could record the soundtracks, so i moved the AE sounds.dat file to my desktop thinking if it couldn't locate the file it wouldn't play the sounds, i was right, but it also wouldn't play the soundtracks, so i put it back in its rightful folder and everything went back to normal. being the dick that i am, i thought i could edit out the sound effects using notepad, so i copied the file so i could keep the original for when i needed it again. the new file i put on my desktop and tried to open with notepad, it crashed notepad, and also made the OTHER file a notepad file, so now ive got no way of restoring it, can someone upload thier own exoddus Sounds.dat file so i can restore my AE sound? i'll be really grateful! if i'm right the file is approx 5.35 MB, thanks!

It will still be a .dat file. Just rename it to have the right extension.

It will still be a .dat file. Just rename it to have the right extension.
no its still has a DAT extension, but opens with notepad.

and that show or hide file extensions, i have totalcommand, so i can actually change them, but the problem is that it still has a DAT extension but opens with notepad.

Well but the game should read it well. It doesn't matter what happens by a double click or which icon is shown.

see, DAT file, but it opens with notepad but the game wont read it, could someone just attach the original file?
EDIT: it opened in notepad! but its jus millions of foreign letters and numbers, i can't beleive i actually thought i could edit it...

If you have oddworld on your steam, then just go to the game in steam, to properties then 'verify integrity of game cache.'
EDIT: Also to edit the sounds.dat you can use Audactiy and import it as a raw file, I'm not sure of the exact specifications. Use the search at the top of the site.

I can't attach it because my computer is in another country at the moment, and it might be illegal, I don't know.
If you are using windows 7 try right clicking the AE directory and choosing properties, then previous versions and going to the oldest, then opening that folder and copying it out of that.

EIDT: no, doesnt work, the previous version still opens with notepad, and it wont even restore anyway

You could also try the "open with" command and choose the abe.exe and set the tab "open it every time".

i was going to try that, i'll have a go at it now

For fucks sake... no, it wont let me...

and theres no way i can restore it, even on total command i can't get it back to the original file, because i don't know the type, i know its a DAT, but when you try to open it it should say Windows cannot open this file, now it just opens in notepad and the game wont read it

Really, have you put it back where it came from and tried running the game? I once tried to get music off a different game by opening a file with Windows Media Player. It didn't work, but it didn't affect the file at all.

All you've done is tell your computer that if a user tries to open that file (and all .dat files), the computer should open it using notepad. I really doubt it will have changed the file in any way, unless you messed with it after opening it. Put your backup copy back where it came from and try and run the game.

No. It should be called sounds.dat. That's it. Just have it where it came from and it will work. You don't ever have to open or run the file, just run the game. Also check that your sound isn't muted in windows.
With the previous version, you open a previous version folder by double clicking, then just locate the sounds.dat then drag it to the desktop then replace the one in the actual AE directory with it.
Also, in the post near the start, DarkHoodness says to make the extentions show. Do that, even if it's not the problem, just so it's definitely not, and so you can clearly see.
