Running Abe's Exoddus on Win98SE on virtual box

Just a quick question on the Win98 option..
I have installed Win98SE on a virtual machine (DirectX6 installed from the game). I own the original Abe's Exoddus , but can only get it to work with a no-cd crack. The game runs so slow it is unplayable. Dxdiag shows that not all Direct3D options are enabled. Could it be that DirectX6 is too old to work with modern PCI video cards? Other suggestions?

Why are you running it through a virtual machine?

I'm running an XP Home (Dutch) version on my PC. I tried every setting to get it to work under XP (compatibility settings etc) to no avail. So, my last resort was through a virtual Win98SE environment..

The reason it's slow is because you're using Virtual PC.

That's strange. Normally both AO and AE should run well under XP.

There is an extensive discussion on this forum that AE will not run on an NT based OS. That was the reason I tried it on Win98 on a virtual box. However, it seems that MS Virtual PC has no option whatever for getting hardware based acceleration. It seems that VMware does , so I tried that option. Unfortunaltely without any luck, possibly cause Win98 and graphics card are incompatible. The only thing that comes to mind is to install another XP version (like Professional version English ??) to give it a try.
My dutch XP Home version simply gives in no matter what i try..

Are you sure? I think a few people had issues with AE in Vista, but I don't recall ever really see anyone have problems on XP.

Yes, I remember that a lot of people had problems running Abe's Oddysee and Exoddus on XP. It always worked flawlessly for me without any meddling, so I'm afraid I have no advice for you.

Can you recall the XP specs? I'll try to get the same set-up then. So frustrating not to be able to play again..

Succesful install I get an error message concerning the fact that I am trying to run on an NT based OS. Changing compatibility settings does not work, tried every possible combo on XP Home version..

Does it specifically say it won't run because of the NT operating system?

It seems odd to me that it would run on my NT based operating system but refuse to run on yours.

Well, succes at last. Reinstalled it on WinXP Home edition (not a virtual box) and found Oddpatch.exe through lucky search (http://www.mediafire.com/?z0p9shrepx8wkss#1)
After copying the installation folder under C:\Program Files: bingo

I'm pretty sure the steam version works on nt OS'es? Might be worth a try since its mega cheap.

which CD did you put in? and did you do a typical or full installation?
weird thing is...i can play on the install disk with the full installation.
it just says insert play cd for a few seconds and then it boots up.

also,i'm using windows XP home on BOTH of my computers and it works fine.

If Abe's Exoddus came out in 1998 then how can it not be compatible with Windows 98? Did it come out slightly before Windows 98 or something?
