Question Slig Turning Sound?

I am currently producing a electronic dance track and I would like to use various Slig sounds as part of the track. I have downloaded the official sound packs off this forum and I have obtained every desired sound from the packs, except one.

In Sound Rips Pack 1 there is an WAV file that is the sound of a Slig turning labelled RFSNDFX_0016. This audio file sounds a lot shorter than when a Slig turns in the game and it does not suit it's purpose in my track.
I cannot find any other Slig turning sounds in the packs.

I would like to know if there is a longer turning sound that I overlooked in the packs, or if the shorter sound is some how manipulated in the game to sound longer.

I'm not sure where such a sound could be found but I'm interested to see your electronic track

Also if there's only the shorter turning sound to be found you should be able to make it longer by getting it to play slower.

You should be able to make it longer by getting it to play slower.

Audacity is the best thing to use for this. It's cool because it's free.

I think the sound it plays is just repeated differently. Sounded like it when I played anyway.

The thing is, the pitch goes lower when it goes slower, when you raise the pitch afterwards, the quality becomes really crap.

Ahhh, my old sound effects thread! ^_^

The slig turning noise, is quite the mystery. I think its about 6 instances of a sound, played about a quarter of a second apart. This is just my estimation though.

I think your right MLGMan it as a really quick stutter or overlap of sound in the seconds. Unfortunately it is going to take some time to work out. I'm using FL Studio to produce which could do it, I'm just learning the software as I go, so it will take some playing around. I never knew games have coded audio controllers until I started this project, very interesting.

For those interested, it's going to follow the Hard Dance/Hardstyle genre... aka doof doof. I’ll defiantly post up links of the final product. I’m not sure how long I’m going to spend on it, a few months maybe.

Sounds good, I wonder why the devs didn't just use a single file for the slig turning sound though.

Spose you could just record the sound in game and single it out from all the background noise, etc. ?

Bear in mind that they only had ~700mb to fit all of the game's resources on.
And the game is ~640MB so they had plenty of room for it. It's mostly likely the sound would be less than 1MB anyway.

Also, bear in mind, that those 700 mb had to be compressed into 250, which was the max for a PS1 disk.

It's not about size on the disc, it's about the taxing of PlayStation's memory. Until pretty recently it was standard practice to combine multiple assets into single files to reduce memory, because that affects performance. Even today games use sprite sheets.

Well, I had a go using old software called CTWave (man, I miss CoolEdit Pro 2.0 so much... I can't find my install discs. )

SligTurn1.wav is recorded from the game, when the music is quiet and sligs are just off-screen.

SligTurn2.wav is also recorded from the game and was used as a reference to make SligTurn3.wav

SligTurn3.wav - Is spliced together from both SligTurn1.wav and Sligturn2.wav. It doesn't sound quite right.

SligTurn4.wav is the best "clean" sound I could record from the game. It's been modified slightly.

All can be found in the attached zip file. Maybe someone with more skill and better software than me can make SligTurn1.wav sound a bit more like SligTurn4.wav.

Every file on a storage device has metadata, regardless of its size. The more files, the larger the total metadata will be. More importantly, it takes time to access and open a file. It's much more efficient to have one file constantly open and simply scroll bavkwards and forwards within it.
