I don't understand how greater intelligence allows for greater happiness.

EDIT: oh, I think I (kind of) misread. You're saying that more intelligent creatures will better appreciate having a long life, not that they'll necessarily be happier?

Well, I suppose they might do. But that wouldn't be much of a reason to me (if I ate meat) to eat cows but not squids.

@MoxCo - but by your logic all creatures should be treated the same, you are the one that suggested intelligence doesn't factor into which animals we kill. And besides, the nucleus functions as a brain carrying out all the necessary functions. Certainly it is developed enough for the bacteria to become the most thriving of any living creature on the planet.

Neither spiders nor slugs are sentient. They're pretty much biological automatons, as are the cells they'e made of.

Actually, sentience can be declassified so low as undifferentiated conciousness, i.e. when a spider catches it's prey with webs or when it retreats from humans, that is sentience. Slugs, perhaps it's debatable but not spiders.

Now that that urge is resisted, life can suck majorly but hey, pain is how we know we're alive.

Life is pretty rockin'. Especially right now. I'm just about getting ready to move into a new house, I've been with an amazing guy for over 2 months now, I'm ready to head into the real world and finally get out of my idealist's bubble...

Yeah the university thing fell apart and I may not go back, yeah I'm having to try and find a job so I can pay my half of the rent, and yeah I'm a nervous wreck when it comes to being in the real world...

But it's totally worth it.

Besides that, at the moment I'm feeling pretty good with my lot. Got into university and loving it, wonderful girlfriend, wonderful friends, a car, and a source of income. Can't really complain about anything.

Sometimes I wonder if it is worth it to be alive. Then I think about what it would be like to not be alive. Then I decide to stay alive.

Other times, I think of good things in life, and I smile, then think life is good. When I think of the bad things, I eventually think of good things, and I think life is good for me even with the bad things, but I can never be too sure if I can say the same for everyone else.

Life is more good than bad in my opinion.
