3D Oddworld Models (WIP)

Hey, just like Ryuufox, I'm gonna start my own thread and keep all my 3d models in this one thread so I don't end up cluttering the forums with multiple threads for each model I do.

I'm quite amateur-ish at this, so it would be great if any of you liked what you see even the tiniest amount . Since Daft.Eng showed his amazing models he'd made in Sculptris, I've been determined to improve my own modelling skills and knock out some Oddworld characters the best I can. I tried doing a slog before, but I think I was going about it the wrong way. That, and the fact that there aren't many reference images about for slogs meant that it was quite tricky to recreate a slog close to how they actually look in game.

My old laptop's gfx card died which is why I haven't attempted making anything since the slog.

But I bought a new laptop 2 weeks ago, and it's goooooood, and mighty powerful and it handles sculptris really well.

I need to learn the process sculpting parts of a model in sculptris, exporting them into 3dsmax, texturing them nicely, making them bend if they're a character with joints and arms and legs and eyes and mouths and willies etc etc... and finally, getting them to work in a games engine.

Here's the slig so far.. I'll probably use most of it as a reference model so I will end up doing it again entirely, particularly the mask so it looks less.. 'organic'.

Very impressive Slig. Can't wait for texture because I always liked the AO Sligs more then the AE ones

i hope so ryuu :P.. i was thinking about asking you if i could use yours, coz i'd hate having to fit all the different geometrical shapes together, and get all the sizes right and such.. but i think i will give it a go myself. Maybe if the upper body turns out nice it'll spur me on to complete it

Really nice, but i think that slig and his mask should be made from two different solids.

It is, luv.

I've just rushed to get a slig-ish form complete for forum-posting's sake. Each tentacle is a separate model, but the mask and the large lump behind it are one.

Fartuess, but WHY do you think they should be made from 2 separate solids?

How's your stuff going?? I really want you to make your scenes into a game! What you've created (or 'recreated') so far is PERFECT!

Well... i simply don't have time. I just started studying computer science and except of just normal classes i'm in 3 academic circles. Now i'm trying to finish UT3 level and few models of building for Witcher mod, because i'm near of finishing it. Abe remake is currently frozen, but when at last i have time for it i will continue work (I'm learning programming, so maybe i will create gameplay part )

( i'm sorry if i written something strange, but i don't know english vocabulary in the topic of universities. Google translate helped me, but it is very unreliable when it comes to translation between polish and english)

Decent job there, pretty impressive so far. Is the model in your sig a more recent version?

Heya, hope you've all had a nice Xmas. I'm more confident working in 3dsmax now. Spent the last 4 or 5 days working on this:

It's so damn difficult to get it just right! It could be better, but I think once I've painted it, it should look a lot better . I should mention, I borrowed the ponytail from nowtun.

Loving those eyes! Is there any chance you can add a slight glassy texture rather than tack on those white specks? It might make it look more realistic...

Thanks for the nice comments ppl ! It's about 1500 tris, without the legs. Once I make the legs I'd expect it to be about ... 2000? 2500? depending on how much detail and shape i want to convey.

That Slig head isn't bad. Have you tried using Mudbox? We're using it at Uni at the minute and it is very easy to use, but very effective. Simply, it's like working with Clay. You can create some really interesting things from the program. I was thinking the other day how well you could recreate Oddworld characters in it, so i think trying that would be good - you can make some serious high poly models in it.
