Gun Laws

After a recent prevalence in my redneckery gene, I've decided to invest in a pellet gun. A relatively harmless thing that I plan on shooting cans and maybe the occasional Pedestrian with depending on how my day's going.

However, it's got me thinking: How is gun control in your area? Here, you have to be at least 18 to buy non-clear plastic Airsoft guns, and you need a permit to be able to shoot certain Pellet guns. Hunting Rifles and Shotguns are sold in stores, but you also need a gun license and a variety of permits to own one.

The trick is to acquire a gun, then glue a bright orange tip to the barrel.

i'll say what i said in a previous thread, only with slightly better grammar.

:
in England you need to apply for a shotgun license from the police, who check your background (obviously). if they give you the license you then need to invest in an approved gun cabinet that must be on the ground floor and kept locked at all times, with a separate locked cabinet for the ammunition. you must convince the police that you have a good reason to own a shotgun, THEN you get the gun which must be kept in a sleeve unless being used and register it with the police.

You then have to find somewhere suitable to use it with land owners permission, and have to show the police in person the area in which you intend to use it to see if they approve. if they do, you must abide by all shooting laws (like not shooting near roads or out of moving cars, etc). Also, the police arrange visits to your home personally to inspect your gun cabinet, and if it isn't in tip-top condition, safe and secure, they will have your license revoked.

if the shotgun fires more than three cartridges you need to register it under a firearms license (i think thats what its called) which is even more fucking tedious, but necessary. also i don't think people that live in densely populated areas stand much of a chance getting a gun license. and it goes without saying that all this costs a bomb, especially the gun cabinet which sometimes costs more than the actual gun. i couldn't afford it.

i thought fuck that, so i just got an air rifle. very basic but it does the job.

that was very long. sorry.
that's as far as i know, so don't quote me on any of it. i'm just going by memory alone.

that error is really getting on my tits.

By 'if the shotgun fires more than three cartridges', does that mean how many shots are loaded individually, or that the shotgun can fire three shots simultaneously?

Legally getting a gun around here requires being over the age of 18, a clean rap sheet, you have to be a member of a legal shooting range, you can't have the gun at home unless you've been a member of said range for a couple of months, if you do have it at home you have to get a safe to put the weapon in, you can't have ammo in the house, you can't carry it on you, the weapon has to be registered to your name and you can only legally own a very small selection of weapons. Mostly just handguns. No shotguns or rifles. BB/pellet guns are illegal too.

its if the shotgun can hold 3 or more cartridges, it needs a firearm license (in the UK). you can get shotguns that load up to 5 or 6 cartridges here i think, but i'm a bit rusty.

:
Because of the law in UK a shotgun can only hold 3 cartridges at the most to be able to go on a shotgun licence.

Guns should only be available to the military and farmers. If you want to shoot for fun, the guns should be owned by the gun clubs, and should not be taken home.

I think there's two sides to it, really. There have been a lot of things in the news in the past years where people were just abandoned by the legal system and the police. Situations that make me want to get a gun because I'm getting less faith in the people that are supposed to protect me every single day. But as it stands, even if you do own a gun and you have some burglar at gun point waiting for the cops, you're probably going to get more jail time than the burglar for aiming a gun at the person breaking into your house. The police is probably going to draw their guns the second they see you and demand you lay down on the ground next to that same burglar.

So yeah, even though people have time and time again proven they are not responsible enough to own guns, I can see how some people feel the need to have them as the legal system is all about protecting criminals instead of the average Joe.

I don't know the laws on pellet guns around here. I remember my neighbors and I would use them to pick pigeons off of the telephone lines when we were in our early teens. The pellets indeed killed them, and from a fair distance, so I can see why there are age restrictions. Not to mention one of my dumbass friends shot himself in the foot with one, splitting one of his toes in half with it.

As for airsoft, I think you have to be over 18 to buy it but not to use it. Even the gas-propelled ones are readily available. I had a large, clunky, rapid-fire one at about 250 fps. Don't know where it is now.

So according to you the world works just fine if a burglar breaks your door, enters your home and steals your TV and your PS3. But then you catch him in the act and in the struggle you break his foot but manage to restrain him till the police arrives. He gets locked up and stuff, but a week later that same burglars lawyer is standing at your front door, claiming half a million dollars because you broke his foot. In court your confident you'll win, but the judge rules in favor of the burglar since you should have waited for the police and used excessive force to restrain him.

This isn't some shit that I'm making up, these things have happened. Burglars have sued people for getting trapped in a chimney, skylight or tripped because they couldn't see where they were going in the dark as they tried to find your TV. And they have won huge amounts of money doing so. And out of all countries you, OANST living in the US, should know how backward the legal system can be.

I like how Havoc completely missed the point of the thread and instead decided to start an argument using examples from Liar, Liar to make his points (which are invalid.)

Oh, and the good old 'YOU SHOULD KNOW I MEAN THE U.S. IS SO CRAZY DUH' argument. A shining example of your ignorance.

Anyway, importing laws for Pellet and Airsoft guns in Canada are either non existent or not enforced, as you can order everything from electric automatic airsoft guns to full-on hunting pellet guns and not deal with any red tape.

However, mailing one from Canada to The States is tricky.

What? OANST didn't ask anything even remotely close to what you said. You just spouted more of your 'everyone lives in an ivory tower but me' bullshit. How much do you believe that counter suing burglars actually win cases like that? Didn't you once say that if someone robbed and you had a shotgun you'd shoot their knees off? Not everybody is as fucking sociopathic and gullible as you.

EDIT: I got a call from this guy I'm buying a Pellet gun from (He's selling me a brand new 150$ 'Shadow' brand for 75$, it's not stolen, either, he's like, some middle aged dude who likes fishing. I assume he likes fishing. He works in the camping's supplies area of Canadian tire) and he'll bbe by at about noon tomorrow to drop it off.

I'm so fricken excited.

I can't comment on guns here, but responding the Havoc: Here in Australia there are strict laws about how you can practise self defence. You may think it strange, but you can't use any more force than you are threatened with. Thus, if you get attacked with a baseball bat, you can defend yourself with a similar weapon but not a knife. If you're threatened with a knife, you could use a baseball bat or a knife but not a gun. And if you injure the other party under such circumstances, you will be liable as if you had attacked them.

That said, when the judge comes to sentence you, the attacker's actions will be taken in to account and he'll probably be quite lenient.

I know and that's how it works in most countries. However apparently there's a difference between what's written in the law and what verdict a judge comes to in a court room. And even then I think that self defense rule is pretty retarded. If someone comes in with a bat and you don't have a single blunt object handy, you're pretty much fucked.

Yup. The law clearly states if you don't have an equal weapon, you have to just take the beating. Whoops.

Just because something happened a few times does not mean that it's either a trend or the norm. This is not the way these things normally go down.
