There is a section of each post devoted to the information about the poster, for example, their avatar, name, post count etc. With the vertical setting it is positioned to the left of each post, on horizontal it is directly above it.

Perhaps someone who has too much time on their hands can take screenshots of horizontal and vertical postbits so people know the difference.
