Seriously, to keep it PC you should not use the term "American" solely for someone from the US. It's mainly the other contries {excluding Canada} that get pissed off for not being thought of as American {Canada normaly acts the other way, since they like to not be 'americans'}. As for "conventional use"... well, I stick to the old ways of English, like "Dice" being the plural and not needing "dices" as a plural of itself. I'm one of those "grammar nuts" who really likes things to be said correctly... although I do suck at spelling.

I'd say if the US economy were to completely stop (which won't happen) there would be a hella lotta problems. Overproduction would be rampant, so prices everywhere might drop. Huge falls in demand would, well, ruin everything. However if it happens after China, India (and a few other Asian countries) form a new trade block and get it up to speed, it'd probably just push the world into a resession... as oposed to cataclysmic breakdown of "paper money".

Well... it gets used that way.

Ultimitly, I go by the motto "your rights end where mine begin". And I have a right not to be targeted with offensive statements... although as long as they don't target me {i.e. Malicious reason for saying/typing/printing them} I guess it's covered by Free Speech.

Still, the same way I {and most irish people} would not liked to be called "English" or "part of the UK", and people from Norway don't like to be called Sweedish, the majority of Americans don't like the fact "American = US Citizen" pretty much across the board.

I kinda think something will happen on 6/6/6, but it's because of people over-reacting about this. You might see some riots or store looting because some people really believe it's the end.

Well it's 06/06/06 today and the sky was clear, it was warm and sunny outside and I proved all the emos and the people who thought the world was gonna end wrong. Nice try, I couldn't have had better day today. OH and also, the date is 06/06/2006, not 6/6/6, retards.
EDIT: About my last remark, I didn't see Used's post which says the same thing. Oh well.

Fear not! The end of the world is not 6/6/06. I have it penciled in as 23/8/2028. Translated into the American layout: 8/23/2028. Do not question the date. The world will almost certainly end on that day, until we actually reach that day, when it is postponed yet again.

Actually, the whole premise is bull. The numbers themselves are arabic, and only mean VI because we count in base ten, as opposed to, for example, base 2, which is computer binary. The calendar is completely arbitrary, as it starts on an unaccurate premise for a date, has had extra months crammed in and is so awful that every four years we need an extra day to catch up. The numbers "666" aren't even agreed upon to symbolise anything in particular, and if the date is being used to promote the new Damien film, obviously the film makers don't believe it, because who's gonna bother watching a movie about the anti-Christ while civilisation crumbles around their ears?

Bullet Magnet, no amount of calender organisation will remove the need for a leap year... unless you just allow the seasons and months to slide out of sync. The year has a fraction of a day extra at the end. This ends up compounding until we need one extra day. Eventualy, the smaller fractions will add up and we'll need a second leap day in a single year.

Heck, even the length of a day keeps changing. Atomic clocks factor in a "leap second" since the earth's rotation is not always the same.

As far as I can tell, the value does not change regardless of the base used. While 2 appears as 10 in binary, they both still have the same value {as long as you realise one is binary}. It's possible the number wasn't translated, but somewho I doubt that.

Native cultures (the smae ones that we practically destroyed in the 19th century) had more accurate calenders. And it is not exactly 365.25 days a year anyway, eventually we will need another day, or one less day. Then there is the unavoidable effect of the Earth's rotation gradually slowing down. Not that we will notice, but the end of the world will surely be on a cosmic scale, with nothing to do with the numbers we apply to things. And if it is just civilisation, then it is so trivial that any clues in the cosmos are simply read into it.

Most other cultures used different bases. I mean, in our system we count to ten, then add another digit and keep going. Who is to say that there can't be twelve mumbers before the next digit is used, or six? Log base ten is just the western system, taken from arabic.

What do you get if you multiply six by nine? As the Ultimate Question goes. Not 42, unless you count in base thirteen.

I saw in a documentary that the number of the beast is actually 616 not 666 but it got mis-translated, because the number equals a name (Nero I believe) and he's the Beast. If evil was really going to strike I think it would of done 5 days ago, it's not like the Devil would wait until the day everyone thinks is evil but the actual day. Am I making sense? I'm pretty tired.

Well, if we're going to get all preachy on the science and history of the issue, I'd just like to correct a couple of points. The Egyptians used base 10 long before the Arabs, and the numerals we use today are Indian, and only came to the Western world via the Arabs.

I'm yet to hear of any culture that uses any base other than ten, for one simple reason - we have ten fingers. People began counting on their fingers. Quod Erat Demonstrandum

To be reasonably exact, the vernal equinox year is currently about 365.242375 days long. Other measurements using other references can be found here.

The Gregorian calendar provides for a year of 365.2425. Thus we have leap years every four, not including century years not divisible by 400. Thus 1700, 1800 and 1900 would not have been leap years but 2000 was.

The difference between these year lengths means that, in theory, the calendar will be one day behind in 8000 years. But then the vernal equinox year is constantly changing so that can be ignored for the moment.

EDIT: Now that is interesting; according to Wikipedia the Yuki used a base-8 system because they used the space between the numbers to count, the Mayans used base-20 because they used their fingers and toes and the Sumerians used base-60 for various practicle uses like counting time and measuring angles. Not sure if they used it for counting though.

We still use the Sumerian system in our own system of time measurement. Base 60

A flawed question from a programme that got "infected" by middle men. I didn't know it works out at base 13... but D. Adams only picked that number because it was the funniest 2 digit number in his opinion. Truely, the question was lost when the Arc B crash landed.
