Is Munch's O. the same experience as...

I'm a rabid Oddworld fan, I don't own an XBOX, so the only games I've played were Oddworld Abe's Oddyssey, and Abe's Exodus. When I first looked into Munch's, I didn't like it due to the fact that it looked completely different from what Oddworld was first, a side-scroller. Tell me what you guys thought when you first played Munch's after coming from the 2d side-scroller world of oddworld. Maybe I'm judging too fast, but Munch's and Stranger's Wrath don't even look or feel like an oddworld game.

Stranger's Wrath almost warrants a purchasing of an Xbox I'd say. Munch's Oddysee, not so much.

If you ever play MO, it just feels rushed. It's good, but it's not great.

Stranger's Wrath is an entirely different orgasm to be had, it's supergood.

But it isn't the same feeling as the first two made Oddworld games on PS1 is it?

It is very different, and in MOs case, semi-whacky and all goofy and such.

Stranger, on the other hand, is teh roxor.

Nope, not at all. It has the Odd Fibe Feeling and athmosphere storywise and cutscene wise, but the gameplay is completely diffrent. It's 3D, so no more screen to screen. I must admit, I enjoyed the 2D games a bit more. But I had a great time playing MO and OSW as well (just completed MO for the 3rd time).

Do a search, Eric. It has been explained many a time. Or, better yet, use Max's FAQ!

Awww … I do. Look here.

In my opinion, both Munch's Oddysee and Stranger's Wrath are undeniably Oddworld in their atmosphere, story, characterisation and art, but they do both lack the same kind of mysterious, magical feeling the first games had. I don't know why this is. I put it down to knowing more and more about how Oddworld the planet works. Gameplay-wise, MO tries hard and has a lot of goodness, but is very repetative and drab. There's barely a puzzle in there. SW makes up for this by far, though, and has awesome, incredibly gameplay, and is a great experience.

EDIT: Thank you, Super Munch; I love you so much!

Harsh version? PS2 Sucks...

Less Harsh version: PS2 didn't have the power Oddworld needed for their games; which again brings me to the harsh version...

When I first played MO through I felt something close to heart was missing, I though it was a bit crummy with some things, but after playing through the whole game it become more epic, and there some oddworldian feeling in there. At the end it was a good game, but that did leave me with a few questions in mind. When found what was missing from the game, I felt very dissapointed with Munch, and worried with what could happend with the rest of the Quintology games.
I enjoyed the gameplay, and controling characters in 3D was fun, but it wasn't something amazing. There were lots of irratating things in the game, which made me seem that the game to be a bit conrey and cheesy. But it wasn't bad for a general game, it still a good storyline and gameplay.

I like SW, it's very different from the first two games, but it does have a special place in oddworld. It's more serous than the prevous ones, but it does have that humour. It's still has the oddworld gameplay, but in a different genre. I would think it has moven away from the oddworldian theme we knew, to more earthly like.

And welcome to the forums!

Edit: Oh, and you to Eric.

Try not to double post, otherwise you may not get any more warm welcomes. Use the "Edit" like I just did on my prevous post.

Based at the same time, but in a different place with an entirely new cast.

The thing I dislike out Munch's Oddysee the most is the environments. I have slowly grown to dispise stupid enormous grey cliffs with green grass on, surrounded on all sides by blue sky/fog. I'm not too keen on the mudokon architecture either...

Try to use the search function on the forum a bit. You can find all kinds of information that way.

OSW is based in the western part of Mudo's (Oddworld Continent) and does not have anything to do with Abe or Munch or the quintoligy. Now go use search! Shoo! :P

Stranger's Wrath feels like a diffrent story written by a same author... It definatly has the Oddworld feeling to it.

But nobody realy can describe the oddworld touch, it would be like describing the personality of someone

Yes! Well put, Xav.
My first exposure to Oddworld was MO, which I picked up with the Xbox when it came out. I didn't have the chance to compare it to AO for about two years. So for the longest time, I thought MO was a pretty decent game.
But after experiencing the rest of the series ... MO has a different flavor, if you will, than the rest. It's like ... the side dish that completes a meal. Not the main course, but there to accentuate the overall experience.
Yay for analogies.

The previous two Abe games had a darker, deeper feel to them. The environments gave you a feeling of endlessness. For example, in AE, FeeCo Depot's background gives you the sense that this is one big enchillada, and I've only seen part of it. The grandoise architecture, the spanning ironworks, it all had a grand feel to it.

And then in MO, all industrial areas were, well...compact and bland.

Obverserve:Now, those screenshots are genuine works of brilliance and depth, each unique. Now, compare those to MO and, well...

We got shafted.

Fortunately, Stranger did return a lot of that atmospher to the series, but neither match the feel of the first two.

MO was to easy but it is fun while it lasts, I agree AO and its dark setting will always be the best, how many games come close to creating that dark a setting?

AO and AE by far is the best of the Oddworld series. I was very dissapointed after Munch but Stranger put the flare back in my heart. I mean the envorments in Stranger were by far very much like AO and AE only 3D. I mean exploring Sekto Springs Dam gave me goose bumps on how much it remindes me of Soul Storm Brewery. I mean Sekto Springs is a vast facility. Next time you play Stranger don't rush through the game, take your time and observe your surroundings. You will be amazed on how similar the enviroments in Stranger are like the places of AO and AE especially at Sekto Springs Dam. That place is like AE and AO in 3D seriously. Another location in Stranger is the underground passage right after Last Legs. When I go through that cave right before Sekto Springs Dam, it is definitly AO and AE through there. Those cave dwellings and the mere size of the place says Oddworld all over it. Playing Stranger is like a totally different expierance character wise but playing AO and AE in a 3D stand point of view.
