I just recently watched Donnie Darko (directors cut) and was wondering if anyone else has seen it? If so, what's your take on it? I think I figured it out but I want to know other peoples opinions.

I havn't seen the directors cut but I've seen the original. The first time I saw it I was really confused, it took a second watching to fully understand it.

It is indeed a great film, a friend of mine has it on DVD and we've watched it a few times. When it ends it leaves you a lot to think about.

It was alright. I probably would have liked it more if it hadn't been hyped up as the most amazing cinematic experience on the face of the planet. It's hard to live up to THAT much ranting and raving.

Everyone that liked DD, do yourself a favor and buy the anime Serial Experiments Lain. It's only 13 episodes long. It's got the same general "atmosphere" as DD, except with a CyberPunk-esque twist.

Plus, Donnie Darko totally ripped the ending off of Serial Experiments Lain. No joke. The endings are literally the same, except Lain's story comes to a more "complete" ending.

I saw DD a couple of months ago for the first time and, whilst I liked it, my reaction was pretty much "what's all the fuss about?". I mean, it's really easy to make a film vague and meaningful when you cut out half the scenes.

But basically my feelings about the film are summed up by Idle Thumb's Chris Remo in his interview with Ron Gilbert:

I don't hate Donnie Darko. I hate the sort of obsessive crazy cult of people that have grown up around that movie thinking it's the best thing since sliced bread, and that no other movie has been intelligent before. I was talking to some girl, and she said, "You know, I really like movies like Donnie Darko, because, the thing I like most about movies these days is that now they make you think!" That really blew my mind and I tend to find a lot of people my age who see Donnie Darko as like, the first movie that had something going on underneath, which, I don't know.

Super agreement goes to the previous quote. Twas a good move, but not the super fabtastical best thing people made it out to be.

And what is it with people only seeing it this year? I saw'd it like, two years ago. Wait, three almost methinks.

Donnie Darko is a great film, Wierd and kind of freaky though.

It's a boring and mundane film, once you realise what everything is about.
Before you realise what everything is about, it's strange and unnecessarily confusing.

Meh, I thought it was a pretty excellent movie as entertainment. Unless its blatantly retarded (like the whole "put the fusion reaction ball in a river to stop it" in spiderman 2 or the microwave gun in batman begins) little logical inconsistencies don't really annoy me.

The thing that drew me to the movie was the dialogue. Noone was given dialogue that felt forced and yet it was really intelligent.

Someone ought to write that bitch.

I love the dialogue in Donnie Darko as well but I reckon the atmosphere was the best,when they're in the cinemas and Frank and Donnie are talking. The sounds and lighting are really good and especially Franks bunny mask. I had to watch it a couple of times to get the movie (but I think that's the same with pretty much everyone though).
