A Stranger Sequel

Credit goes to Oddworld Universe.

A Stranger Sequel Currently Being Discussed (4th September 2004)
Computer And Video Games has reported that Lorne Lanning exclusively revealed to them (at the Game Stars Live event) that his development team and himself have already begun talks with EA Games about the possibility of a sequel to Oddworld Stranger. While it has been previous public knowledge that Lanning expressed his desire for a follow-on to Stranger, it hasn't until now, been stated so blatantly.

It seems Lorne Lanning is already talking to EA about future Stranger titles: http://www.computerandvideogames.com....php?id=108803

With all the good buzz from the videogame press, a sequel is a good business move. Plus, in the Polygon Oddworld story, Lanning already said he was wanting to do more Stranger titles while waiting for technology to improve for Abe and Munch.

:

More than halfway. XBN hinted that Stranger was close to being finished, but wasn't being released this year because of the "competition swallowing" Halo2. That's why Stranger is being released in Spring of next year. With that much time left to refine and polish the game, Stranger could be the best Oddworld game yet!

I don't know if I sequel would be good... I didn't played the first one yet.
But as long as it includes discovering bits of info about Oddworld and Stanger himself I agree with it

I hope the first one sells amazingly well

I know what you mean.

I think the graphics look just fine in motion. And I haven't even seen it in person...just on the internet.

Anyway, Lorne said Stranger would lead to "an epic conclusion," so maybe something of a cliffhanger at the end might ask for a sequel. Hopefully when I play the game it'll leave me wanting another Stranger game!

Well Oddworld: Stranger will be on the PS2 aswell. Infact they say that the Xbox version is done and that there just waiting for the PS2 version to be finished...that and they want Halo2 to slow down alittle before they release.

Good find, Alcar. I've credited the discovery to Oddworld Universe, even though the updates don't show on OWU for me. Aren't I just the greatest?

A Stranger sequel... well, it had been said before that Lorne was planning future games to make use of the Strange Engine, but to see it put so bluntly and so soon. EA must have some real confidence in Stranger.

I wonder if they will work on it before the release of Oddworld Stranger...
anyway I hope they will release it shortly after Oddworld Stranger 1

I doubt Oddworld will be able to pump games out that fast either. While it would be great. There are other factors besides development that come into play. As we've seen (or seen speculated), the release of other games, can have an affect on the release of Oddworld. And that is only one factor.

I realy doubt they would alternate Stanger games and Quintology games...
I think they are going with Stranger and his engine until the next console generation

Wow thanks for the info! I'm excited about it, but I really wanted to see more of Abe and Munch. I guess it's just because the first Stranger isn't even here yet....I'll probably be really excited after I've become addicted to Stranger as well.

This is awesome news!!! Except they still will have to contend with Halo 2 in a way because seeing how the first HALO to date is the bestselling game on Xbox, and most owned game I cant even imagine how much that is going to continue now with Halo 2.

I like the idea of maybe switching off between stories for oddworld games. Say after say Stranger II, make another Quintology or Bonus game, and bring us back to the other Oddworld stories we started with, then go back to the Stranger type. Keep doing that until whenever and its too soon to think of an end of course but whenever things do end, it would be great to end with the Mudokon that started it all, Abe.

they have to start planning the next one before Stranger comes out. If they only start working on the plot and production design afterwards, then the programmers and level designers will be sitting at their computers twiddling their thumbs for a few months until their part of the work kicks in.

Yeah, that's a great idea. A bit of the old, a bit of the new.It would defintely keep me interested in Oddworld. I would LOVE the quintology to end with Abe, it would be classic.

Different Ubisoft studios, they started work on 3 as soon as they finished 1, whilst 2 other studios dealt with 2. This applies at OI too, as at any mid to large devco .

The assets (3D models, auido, music, level designs) are all in place as the Xbox version is virtually at Gold status, so the PS2 port (the reason the Xbox version is being delayed) barely requires any of the design and creations team memebers. Hence they are "twiddling their thumbs" abit, or soon will be.

Stranger 2 or another Oddworld game would of course be on the OI managements minds, and they would need to look to their current publishers (EA) for a green light and financing before looking elsewhere. They may not have an ongoing contract with EA, but you can bet the men with the fat wallets will have first dibs.

EA have seen the feeding frenzy that is developing around Stranger and would probably hedge OI toward a similarly styled first person game (rather than the relativley poor selling 3D puzzle game style of Munch or the commercial near suicide of a side scrolling 2D retrofest).

And so we get the overly excited headlines "Lorne asks EA if they want part of another game".

Either way OI cannot fail on this one. The combined power of their sheer talent and vision with Ea's marketing nous and wallop means OI are onto a winner already, but I think we'd see another Oddworld game even if it failed miserably. Lorne's a stubborn b'stard like that.

Thats why we love him.
