Oddworld We 've ever experienced like Alec' and his parent .

And you have ever experienced like Alec'and his parent, have not you.?

>>Children's Literature(Issue 28 Spring 2000) :The New Synergies or 'Sneaking past the Sligs with Alec' <<

:
'Sneaking past the sligs', for instance, emerged from my sad attempts to learn how to play one of the Oddworld games, Abe's Exodus, I think. Whilst this game has both adult and child enthusiasts, this aspect of computer culture is still, overall, one that appeals predominantly to younger people. I had only used a Playstation once before and Alec showed great patience in trying to get me to understand the controls. After some time we both realized that the technology was beyond me (although I have kept trying since!) Alec decided, instead, to show me his imitation of the central character Abe, and I decided that I could manage to do that, even if I couldn't get to grips with the game. This took off into a game played by human beings, which was based on the one on the computer. Far from stopping interaction, the game encouraged it.
...I think so.

My Dad once tried to play Oddworld, but he didn't really have a knack for it. Some friends and siblings have tried, but they've failed miserably. I guess the strategy involved with Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus was too much for them to handle

My best mate got me into oddworld by getting me to play AO. I tried to do the same thing with my new friends at high school, but they saw no interest. Now I know more about Oddworld than my mate.

All my friends from my previous School couldn't understand why I liked Oddworld as intimately as I did, and didn't like games such as Starcraft, Warcraft and Counter Strike (to name a few). I just don't see the deep and meaning in any of those games, but Oddworld has it.

But then how do you explain my obsessiveness with bright and colourful adventure games?

I know, there are only 2 people I know at school that have even heard of Oddworld. My dad thinks it's weird but my brother love the games.

I'm miserable at getting others to play my games. Mainly because when they play, I always yell at them for doing something wrong, like they'll go the wrong direction and I'd be like "No you idiot, the other 'right'!". So I don't bother trying to get others to play my games, but I do urge them to buy the game themselves and play it on their own system. When my friend bought MO, he would come to school every day and describe the level to me and I'd have to write him a whole strategy guide to that particular part of the game.

My parents never really showed an interest in playing games or computers for that matter [other than when my dad used to play the old Commodore 64 with us when we were kids]. Although I have talked about Oddworld and the principles of the storylines to my mother a few times and she has been very interested. So now she knows all of the characters and has watched all of the FMVs. So eve though she has never touched a controller in her life, she is a fan of Munch and thinks that Fuzzles are adorably cute.

Most of my RL friends don't care for games which is a shame. Although I became friends with Miss Odd when she came to her dad's work on the school holidays, as she had played Oddworld before and was interested in web-design. So I guess I could say that I increased her interest in Oddworld.

My brothers like the oddworld games a lot, but they aren't interested in them at all, they dont care about the story or anything, it's just the gameplay they like - and not all that much either.
Ever they groan as I watch all the fmv's from MO again, like a movie, only with big chunks missing

Parents are indifferent to Oddworld, though I believe my dad is rather bemused by it.

My Dad plays Simpsons Road Rage and my Mom played an arcade game with me. And we all like the Eye Toy. My brother likes watching the FMV sequences and the mudokons falling off cliffs. "Hello," "Hello!" "Follow me," "Okay, Woooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!" (splat) "oops,".
Poor guys.

My sister was actually the one who got me into Oddworld in the first place. She had played AO with a friend and they both couldn't get past the meat grinder in the first level.

*flashback*

Anyway, when I got my PS2, my sister told me I HAD to get that game. She went to the store and got AE(AO wasn't at the store). I played. I fell in love. I think it was the Sligs that I started drawing that got me hooked. I also just loved the story.

*present time*

Now, my whole family thinks I have an OW obsession and find me weird. Even my sis who introduced me to it! Grig(my brother) likes OW, but thought I was going overboard when I called Borders everyday to check on Polygon. He isn't as dedicated as I am.

My dad actually got me into Oddworld. We were watching TV one day, and a preview came on, and I was too little to get too interested in anything besides Spyro and Pokemon, but we were at Target later that week and he grabbed a copy. And this is coming from a man who cannot stand to play video games for more than five minutes (he gets dizzy).

My brother is into Oddworld almost as much as myself. We used to waste saturday nights making popcorn and then playing AO late into the night. We decided to ask for an Xbox for Christmas back in 2001 just for the fact that Munch was going to be on it.

I only know two kids who have played Oddworld at my high school. One had only played Munch, though, and wasn't really a big fan. The other guy likes it pretty well though.

When I was younger me and my dad played Quake II for the PC and loved it beyond all passion. I would stand behind him telling him where to go and who to shoot and he would do it like my own personal puppet. Eventually we got to the end of Quake and killed Makron, we were all happy and then what was left of Makron's torso self-destructed the place before we escaped and we had to fight him again...and again, and eventually escaped. We then got Quake II Underground (basicly the same game only with different levels/baddies/missions) and then got Quake III Arena and pulvarized online players. We are undoubtabley the Quake champions

The only game my Father enjoyed was Gran Turismo 3...and he wasn't good. I lost a couple of times to make him feel good about himself.

I once tried to get my mum to play Oddworld. She sucked, but then she does at most games. She quite enjoys Bust-A-Move, though we haven’t played that in years. At my last school, I managed to get at least two people highly interested in Oddworld, and at my new school the more important people are aware of my interest in Oddworld, though perhaps not of how deep it goes. I encouraged Nathan to download the demo, which rocks. Then he set about downloading (yes) the full game.

I must buy him it.

The story of Alec is cute, though. Reminds me of Dragon Bear Cave, but without the parent referring to ‘The Small Child’.

I hope you're all going to be recommending OW4 to everyone you know.
