Oddworld

I know what happend. Well oddworld wanted Japan fans to play the game but they found out japan finds 4 fingerd meat workers insulting, so they didnt bother paying to keep it so they got rid of it.

I deleted your extra posts, Aragog. No worries, but in the future remember to use the edit button below your post.

here is OWI's answer to that:

:
Q: In the game I noticed that in the first game Abe and Mudokons have 4 fingers then in Abe's Exoddus they have only 3 fingers. What happened with the 4th finger?

A: Well, it's a long story that needs to be told. So here it is... Japan has a strict discriminating policy against any simulated characters entering their country with four fingers. Historically, Japan has had a subclass of meat packing workers that were typically looked down upon in their society. In later days, the blatant displaying of a four fingered hand gesture, intentionally directed at another, came to mean that you were calling them a member of the meat packing sub class. Which, we understand, was not at all a compliment.

It appears that the four finger connection with the meat packing class was due to work related accidents, but was so frequent that it came to symbolically represent the sub class. It seems as though this is a part of the Japanese history that some groups within Japan would like to see forgotten. Therefore, it is at great risk that you publish four fingered characters in Japan, as you may very likely end up in legal battles with a vociferous pressure group. This group claims that this type of representation is equivalent to and as degrading as the yellow star forced to be worn on Jews by the Nazi's during the Second World War.That is, it's offensive and degrading unless they can extort enough money out of you. Then it's all okay. Case in point: We were told that the Walt Disney Corporation is charged five million dollars a year by this group so that Mickey Mouse may live in Japan and retain his original four fingered design. Otherwise, old Mickey would need to see a surgeon and have something done about that insulting forth finger.

The moral of this story is... if you want to pay, then it's ok. If you don't want to pay, then it's a horrible insult to our culture. In other parts of the world we have a word for these types of two-faced tactics. We call it extortion. If it is truly offensive and degrading, then don't allow it at all. But to allow it for a price... is to belittle the case altogether. It suggests that the real truth behind these groups is that they are using the darker moments in their own cultures' history as an excuse to coerce money out of content providers.

Well, being that this is Oddworld, we felt that this seemed like a perfect addition to the Abe story. We thought it was ironically perfect that he was being discriminated against for being who he was. As the message came from Japan, "They don't like his kind here, with the sincere suggestion," Just chop off one of his fingers cause you don't have the money to pay up..." caused us to feel that we indeed needed to allow Abe to go through the suffering that goes along with being a poor slob at the bottom of the Food chain. Yup, we chopped off his finger so that the Japanese wouldn't get offended (or paid). He didn't like it one bit, but due to the fact that their ain't much he can do about it... we decided that he could donate his finger rather than us donating five million dollars. Such is life in Japan when you're a four-fingered meat packing worker.
And that is how Abe lost his finger in Japan. He's still pretty pissed off about it, but we convinced him that with the amount of games sold in Japan, he still might be able to get his message through to their culture someday. As a true believer in his cause, he felt that the sacrifice of a finger was but a small price to pay in hoping to shed some light on discriminations and injustices the world over.
oh yeah, btw, each hero of the Quintology will have his own moon

Yes, OWI folded over and redesigned Mudokons to have one less finger so that a) the Japanese wouldn't be offended, and b) they wouldn't have to pay large sums of Moolah. However, it makes you wonder at the worthiness of such a feat when Munch's Oddysee wasn't even translated for the Japanese's enjoyment.

I hope they dont make one for Steef. I rather have the five main Quintology characters if anything have a moon for their chosen race. The thing that didnt settle well with me was that the Mudokons had a moon, because they were the chosen race to begin with, I just dont really see the Gabbits (no offense) being a chosen species of Oddworld.

Good point, I wouldn't see much of a point of having a moon for the steef species.. as for being a chosen species, maybe the gabbits will play a bigger role later on in the quintology..? Lorne Lanning said that Munch's Oddysee wasn't anything near what he wanted it to be, so maybe that matter hasn't been dealt with yet. ANSWERS, WE NEED ANSWERS! X____x PUMP OUT THE GAMES AHHHHHH! T_T

Perhaps your right, I remember them saying Munch's Exoddus would explain a lot more about the Gabbits, and also their disfunctional relationship with the Mudokons.

What do you mean by holy moons? You mean moons of characters...they are not really holy from what I know, just sacred. And in the old topic I pointed out that there are a count of 16 different moons that I could see in the backgrounds of the stockyards.

Yeah good point. The other moons could just be for the race of each quintology hero etc, but the holy moon is still probably the Mudokon one, as it was the first visible to the races eons before also.

I don't think anything synificant with the moons will happen within ten games. I know the quintology is going to be five part game seris but in one of Lannings interviews he is telling us that it will be finnished within 10 years which concludes that there will be all together five parts but most likely a huge host of games because remember the bonus games.

In the original story boards of Munch, Munch was suppose to have a sacred lake as opposed to a moon. But as we can see Munch has a moon. I think whats going to happen is when we see all the sacred moons of the chosen races of Oddworld appear in the sky to the heros, a new age will be born thus bringing an end to the age of the Magog Cartel. Thats my theory. The heros of the quintology are to emerge from the clutches of the evil Magog Cartel and simply bring on a new age for Oddworld and its inhabitants. I don't think Stranger will have a moon because he is not part of the quintology. He is concurrent with the events of the quintology.

Sort of like the end of the dark ages and thus a new promiseing age emerges. That seems to be more right with the theory behind the moons. Quite simply in my opinion the moons are just the sign of an emerging new age brought forth through the stories of our heros thats all. Yes Mudokons are the chosen race but keep in mind that Oddworld is huge and we only seen a small glimps of Oddworld and havent fully explored the full depths of the odd. There are things and cultures we don't even understand yet.

Oddworld is more than an emerging race freeing itself out of bandage ie the Mudokons, Its about the inhabitants, not one race remember that.

Maybe all the moons form a picture of Abe's arse and then it destroys oddworld with a massive whale choking fart.

That's from an old moon topic - someone said they thought it would have made more sense if Munch were to have had his own lake.
