I think, with a fair amount of changes here and there, it could become a pretty awesome multiplayer game. I'm pretty certain it's not happening at all, but it's a pretty fun thought.
As far as characters go, I don't think that'd be a really big problem. The best way to go about it is that everyone would get the same crossbow, and you could choose different skins for your character. That kind of thing wouldn't really matter as much in multiplayer.
The gameplay could be interesting. You could use the same Live ammunition and bountying process.
- The chippunk could become a radar decoy or something like that.
- A bounty could gain the player more points than a kill, however leaves you vulnerable to attack from others for a short amount of time.
- A Bolemite could keep someone subdued for a short time while you attacked others, and if you get wrapped up by one yourself, there could be a small push-button minigame so you can determine the speed at which you release yourself (but have minimum and maximum durations).
- You'd have to find your own ammo about the map. Ammo would be balanced by how effective it is. I'd say everyone might start with a weapon that damages but doesn't stun, and doesn't fire so fast. Like a slower version of Stingbees (then there might be powerups to upgrade the crossbow to fire faster for a short time, etc).
- You would run faster in third person, and your melee attacks would be more devastating (but, obviously, would only work up close).
Even from that short list, I could see this being a pretty fun multiplayer game. It probably won't happen, and if it did it'd take a shitload of playtesting for balancing, but it's definitely a fun thought.
