In ancient England a person could not have sex unless you had consent of the King (unless you were in the Royal Family). When anyone wanted to have a baby, they got consent of the King, and the King gave them a placard that they hung on their door while they were having sex. The placard had F.U.C.K. (Fornication Under Consent of the King) on it. Now you know where that came from.

There are a few theories... Another one is when people were put in the stocks for petty sins, they would carve the words, 'For Unlawfull Carnal Knoledge,' onto to stocks. After a while, that was shotened to 'f uck'. If that's the case, I'm not sure how that turned into a 'bad word'. Maybe it was a term ONLY used for people in the stocks, and was not appropriate to use it any other time. Just my thoughts.

According to Monty Python's Flying Circus, 'f*ck' is derived from German - the word 'frikken' which means 'to strike'. I have probably spelt it wrong, since I've never heard it written down...

Edit: Doh! I meant I've never seen it written down...

Hmm, very interesting. However, did you know that 'bollocks' comes from the French 'beau lux', and actually means a good idea or sudden revelation.

So, the same word simultaneously means opposite things, and several other things other, too.

I always thought the word 'Bollocks' was derived from the word 'Bollock'... I guess it must have been the other way round...

I suppose it must have. And of course, hence the verb 'to get bollocked' or sometimes 'to get bollocksed'. In other words, to get seriously told, and maybe even (gasp!) a detention!

I got a detention yesterday. But that's irrelevant.

Incidentally, our F word actually derives from ancient Egyptian, with a bit of pre-Celtic thrown in. How you managed to mingle ancient Egyptian and pre-Celtic into a four-letter word I don't know.

I find the original of swear words amazingly fun. For one thing it allows perfectly legal use of otherwise 'bad' language. Sod, for instance, is a type of grass terfing. And any Red Dwarf fan will tell you 'smeg' comes from the medical disease* 'smegma', which is sexually transmitted, although 'smeg' is also a brand of refridgerator.

* I believe that most diseases are medical.

I was under the impression that Smegma was when skin that fell off the body was not washed away and was kept in one place [e.g. under the foreskin or the eyelids] until it grew rotten/mouldy/septic/whatever word is appropriate...
