Happy Upgrades (and 2.5D gameplay discussion)

I think "oddworld Inhabitants" should upgrade each "2D" game to "3D"...

I'm assuming there is a reason that you are taking your time to answer Rhetorical Questions from games in a siggy?

Ontopic: That would kind of defeat the element of it being a platform game.

Nah; I'm certainly anticipating nowtun's 3D remake, but I don't think OI should upgrade the game in 3D...I think if they did go ahead with upgrading them; they'd make it to much like MO, which in my opinion...was the worst game in the Oddworld series. However; nowtun's 3D remake seems to retain the magic of the original games, I actually think his will be slightly better than a professional OI remake.

I don't really like the idea of OWI spending their time on remaking old stuff. I rather have them make something new.

Something new would definitely be preferable. If OWI managed to get into a situation where they had both the time, money, and inclination, well...that would be just heaven for us fans. It's been five years. Some of us are getting dusty.

Only after they've complete the quintology. And then, it should be 2D gameplay with true 3D (In contrast to 2.5D, prerendered 3D on a 2D surface) which will allow a dynamic camera and fancy effects. But I'm still waiting for the Oddbox so I can finally play the last two games, so they can take their time on this one. :P

That's not 2.5D. What you've described is simply 2D, like AO and AE. What you described as '2D gameplay with true 3D' is what is typically known as 2.5D.

Even if that makes my engineering eyeball twitch.

I share your pain.

So what's 2.5D exactly? Little Big Planet or Splosion Man?

Yep. Gameplay restricted to a 2D plane taking place in a 3D environment.

By engineering definitions, LittleBigPlanet would be 2.3D; freedom in two dimensions and three possible positions in the third.

Does that make Abe's Oddysee/Exoddus 2.2D? I can't tell. I realize the gameplay environment is not 3D, meaning it's not 2.5D in the gaming sense, but the illusion of two positions in depth qualifies it as 2.5D in the graphical sense.

There's no official definition of 2.5D as obviously you can't have half a dimension. In my post I used this definition:
"A game that mixes 2D and 3D graphical elements in a way that it's not completely 3D or 2d graphically-wise".
Oddworld uses this definition:
"3D models used as pre-rendered 2D graphics".

The term 2.5D is in reference to the 2 dimensional plane of the playing field, but the extra dimension of entities on it. LittleBigPlanet, hence, is effectively 3D.

EDIT: Speedy shit.

"Gameplay restricted to a 2D plane taking place in a 3D environment."

as max said. This is way how game developers understand 2.5D term in games (2.5D in CG graphic programs, like ZBrush have different meaning), and there isn't 2.2D, 2.3D or 2.1243D. Levels of depth have nothing common with 2.5D game definition. It's still 2.5D no matter how it is exactly build. If "Gameplay restricted to a 2D plane taking place in a 3D environment", then game is 2.5D

Not sure if that what i just wrote is clear

To explain what Xav and myself were talking about earlier; in Engineering terms, 2.XD refers to the axes of motion of a machine/robot. Imagine a robot that could move back and forth and stop at any point; that would have one degree of freedom. A robot that could move back/forth and left/right and could stop at any x,y point within its workspace would be 2D.

Now, imagine that last robot with a tool that can move up and down, but can only stop in either the fully raised or fully lowered position. This would be considered 2.2D; 2 degrees of freedom + 2 possible positions in the third dimension.

2.5D would imply that the tool could move up and down and stop in five specific locations. That happens too, but is not very common.

In any case, this is all splitting hairs. Just wanted to point out that the phrase has different meaning in different contexts.

Yep, like Nate said...

So 2.5D in gaming context refers to a 2D game with everything made in 3D. Thanks for the clarification. (and Little Big Planet is a 3D game then?)

LittleBigPlanet is 2.3D in the Engineering definition. I don't think there's truly a phrase to describe it in gaming parlance.

No, because 2.5D in the gameplay sense implies that the gameplay occurs in 2D with 3D graphics, but the gameplay doesn't not occur only in 2d; there is that element of depth as well.
