The one and only superior Oddworld fan

Do some of you Oddworld fans here consider yourself a “superior Oddworld fan”? I myself consider to be this due to I have all the trilogy. But I’ve also rare oddworld stuff that I doubt any fan here would be able to get, e.g. my own-made clay model of Abe and not forgetting those very-rare pogs of Oddworld characters.

I’ve also a short-film that I purchased from Oddworld store detailing the Oddworld universe in depth. I’ve got a lot Oddworld collectables which is why I consider myself superior to use people who have just got one Oddworld game or something.

Anyone here got more than my merchandise and consider themselves a “superior Oddwolrd fan”?

I wouldn't hesitate to name Max the Mug and Xavier the biggest Oddworld fans on the planet.

Amount of merchandise means absolutely nothing as to how much you like something, only how much mnoey you're willing to spend on it. Things that notify you more as a fan are things like fan-art, fan-writing, how much you care for the story and characters and that sort of thing. I, for example, love Halo also much more than many other supposed 'fans' as far as I can tell,, and know far more about it, yet all I have a couple of the books and figures. All I have of Oddworld are the first two games and the Art Book, yet I reckon I know and care a good deal more about Oddworld than a number of people e.g. people who think Oddwiki is accurate. I don't even have Stranger's Wrath or Munch yet know and care about the characters within just the same.

Rather an ironic point from you, considering part of Oddworld is critcism our materialistic and consumer driven society, and you with lots of merchandise saying how great it is :P Merchandise of something like this is always nice to have, regardless. But how much money you've spent or are able to spend isn't really a fair point. If you are incredibly rich and have a passing interest, you might not like something as much as a lower class citizen does but are still likely to have more stuff related to it due to being spoilt or w/e and having more spare to spend/waste.

Having loads of merchandise doesn't make you the "Superior fan". By just playing the Oddworld games, posting on the forums and basically supporting the series is enough to show how much of a fan you are. There are lots of people on here who are better fans than you are. Take a look at the Oddworld Library. That site has been created by a couple of members from here who are VERY dedicated to Oddworld. Having merchandise means nothing.

I think the creators of fan-fiction are probably the highest level of fan.
That said, I have played AO, AE, OA, OA2, MO(GBA)... which is almost every single game.
I recently watched the music videos and ps2 beta versions etc...

I really like sligs, so I guess I'd say I'm a pretty good fan.
But I know theres people who have every single game and wrote a dozen fanfics...

I will not make myself prey for luckier eBay users, not fight in the dirt tooth and nail for rare merchandise. I love Oddworld, I sure, I like the merchandise of IPs I enjoy, but I will not besmirch myself or my love of Oddworld by fighting in the dirt with fellow fansfor it, throwing around money I can't afford to spend.

You will find that the rarity of Oddworld merch and its impossibility to acquire will make the bandying about of it claiming yourself to be a "superior fan," as if merchandise is the measure for this title and as if the title means anything at all will make you quite unpopular on this site, particularly amongst those whose devotion, effort and sheer hours managing various Oddworld resources in the name of their fandom is significantly superior to your own. Those who pay for and manage is very website for instance, or those who collate all available information on Oddworld in one place for the fans. Or even, so help me, those who travel halfway across the world for an interview with Lorne Lanning himself.

As they said, fans are based on their dedication to the series as opposed to the merchandise they own. While I agree Max and many of the others are the biggest fans - I think Lorne Lanning himself might be bigger, as he created it after all. He and a dedicated team of Inhabitants. C:

I consider myself a very dedicated fan, and am desperate to improve my creative skills to further immerse myself in it. Such as studying anatomy and other things to better draw them, trying to improve my guitar so that I might write Oddworld-inspired music, and then the ever-snail-paced Tarot. I want to learn all that I can about the characters/species' physiology and other things to better write about them too.

As far as merchandise goes, I own all but the Gameboy games - but I bought them so I could better write about them and draw them. I wouldn't mind owning other merchandise, but I figure if I am meant to find it, well, I will.

Biaritz, I generally consider "superior fans" of anything to be rather lifeless. So good for you!

I'm more into the Dedicated fans, rather than the silly kiddy children that consider themselves to be the best merely for owning the latest Oddworld lunchbox collection. Who here's a real fan? Someone who's taken the time to actually make an OW website, or a boastful fool that owns all Oddworldian products?

I for one consider myself a good fan of the series, despite the fact I only own AE, MO, and SW (I sold my copy of AO a year ago anyway).

I'm probably one of the biggest fans, but I don't consider myself a superior fan. If it weren't for school and aspirations I'd probably be a full out fantard and dedicate my life to nothing but Oddworld. I don't want to be a lifeless fatass loser though, so that isn't going to happen anytime soon.

How am I one of the biggest fans? Well first off, I'm completely obsessed with the games and they're the only ones I've actively played for the past 8 years, and I get overly excited when people I meet in reality know it. I own one of the limited edition versions of the art book and two hard covers that I own because I don't want to ruin the LE version. I have a whole pile of fanarts, painting, sculptures of Oddworld's inhabitants and terrains. My room is covered in them, so I hate inviting people over because they think I've gone a bit over board with the fandom. My wallpaper is Oddworld, my icon's on all the sites and forums I'm on are Oddworld, and my homepages all have something to do with Oddworld.

I have all 4 games and duplicates of the first two in the event something happens to the disks. The whole soundtrack of AE and AO are on my mp3 player, and I even made my own custom case for it, which is a slog inspired case. Hell, when AE came out I ordered at least 5 of their shirts, sticker collections, posters, etc. Also, Oddworld's bizarre designs and vast landscapes inspired me to become an artist of sorts. Seeing the concept art just leaves me in awe, and I wish to become some sort of video game designer or 3D animation artist. If not, an everyday normal artist will suffice. Currently, I'm sculping a 9" slig figure out of paper clay. If I had a camera I'd take a picture, but alas, I do not.

I also attempt to know exactly what's going on in OWI at all times, but it doesn't always work.

I'd just like to say that the term Superior is usually statistically meant to mean two standard deviations above the norm, the use of superior depends on whether your taking the general public or the general fan as the norm.

I guess that would be me. XD I think I visited three times, although once I was over for E3 as well.

Just really adding to what people have already said, but if someone goes out and says they are "superior" to anyone else, then they're really just trying to make themselves sound good. And generally they aren't really superior at all. At least that's pretty much what I've found.

There are many fans of Oddworld and everything else, but they all express their fandoms in different ways. It doesn't mean that any of them are bigger or better than any of the others. Just because you have merchandise, doesn't mean anything. Not everyone can afford stuff, or just don't come across it. And believe me, I have a lot of stuff myself, a lot of it even rarer than the stuff you've listed. But it doesn't make me any more of a bigger fan. I'm just simply someone who likes to collect stuff on the things I am into [I do the same with my other obsessions, Cloverfield and Final Fantasy]. Other people like to write and draw, which is a wonderful talent to have, but not everyone is blessed with these things either. But even some thing as simple as just playing the games, or just having a respect and admiration of the Oddworld Universe are just as important. Actually, I believe that part of being a good fan, is respect to other fans and realising that all of us show our fandoms in our own ways instead of trying to make ourselves sound better than anyone else.

I personally admire Max and Xav for their immense knowledge and ability to find news, because both of those things I have tried to achieve over the years and really didn't do to well, so I guess in a way I admire them for having qualities I would like to have. These guys just manage to know stuff that other people don't, and come up with stuff that you'd think was buried long ago in a vague interview or article somewhere.

A true fan of anything not just Oddworld doesn't need merchandise. He or she needs only the game or book movie etc. and a really great imagination. For me Oddworld is like a great inspiration for my imagination. I show it through my fan fics and art however I feel soo bad that I have fallen short from Oddworld in the last few years. I really need to get back into it.

Well, okay. There would have to be. The entire nature of a tangential issue implies the existence of a larger more important one. But my point still stands. I'm holding it up but it's standing.

If merchandise had anything to do with it, Cullen Heath is now in the possession of nearly my entire estate (lots of which was left over from the Odd Tour), and paid something close to the tune of a grand for it all together. I had no clue it would all sell to the same guy but when you're into it you're into it, it's like a bug and the same goes for any fandom. Just how do you show it?

EDIT

Here's something I did to show it- I'm bringing the microphone out of the closet now, last seen in 2001!

This actually worked; the head is an authentic 1920s-era carbon microphone and the handle was something I custom made. It was also fully wireless but was also one HEAVY sucker which limited its practical usefulness.

The Newscaster Slig's microphone.

Lorne now posesses this and Scott Easley actually tried to use it as a golf club imitating Newscaster Slig, much to my chagrin at the time.

I ultimately scrapped the M.O.M tag because it looked better without it.

Cloverfield (72)

Does that also include that Abe desktop standee that OWI gave me on the OddTour and you convinced me to part with it and give it to you instead?

I remember the Microphone that was awesome.

:
They make Cloverfield merchandise? What for?

It was an okay film to watch once but I couldn't imagine sitting through it a second time.
Actually, most of the stuff I have is promotional-only stuff or stuff that comes from cinemas like posters and things like that [as well as a couple of screen-worn costumes/outfits]. They have only released a T-shirt and a limited edition figure, unless you count the Slusho merchandise, which is more a tie-in related to the ARG/viral campaign. There's quite a dedicated fandom of the movie out there, but it's not huge or anything like that.

I'd better not mention how many times I've seen it then. Haha. I'll just leave it at way more than just a second time, and that was just in the cinema alone. Which is strange coming from someone who never watches movies more than once with only a few exceptions.

Cloverfield... (Abe Babe)

Lol, wow I forgot about that. No, I gave that away to a friend of my younger sister's I met some years ago who was into Oddworld. I gave him some stickers and patches and stuff but his mouth really watered for that standee so it found a good home.

I think you just gave someone The Fury. Beware. There may be consequences.

Well..... I don't think so. Things come and go because you just can't hold onto everything forever but you can let someone else enjoy something as much as you did. You know?

I still have all my personalized stuff though.

When you said, 'The Fury' I first thought of Christine, the 1958 Plymouth Fury demonic car from hell. Great movie. OOOHHH! It's The Fury!
