Oddworld style games

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for games that are similar to the first two oddworld games. So far I have the following games on the list(chronological order):

Prince Of Persia - http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/prince-of-persia
Another world - http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/out-of-this-world
Flashback - http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/fl...t-for-identity
Heart of the alien - http://www.mobygames.com/game/sega-c...parts-i-and-ii
Blackthorne - http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/blackthorne
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee - http://www.mobygames.com/game/window...d-abes-oddysee
OnEscapee - http://www.mobygames.com/game/amiga/onescapee
Heart of darkness - http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/heart-of-darkness
Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus - http://www.mobygames.com/game/window...d-abes-exoddus
Between heaven and hell - http://www.mobygames.com/game/window...eaven-and-hell

If you know anymore games like that I'd like you to post the titles here with a link to some info about the game if possible.

Also, what do you call this genre?

erm... Side-scrolling platformer, perhaps?

Or is that a bit too obvious?

Virtua Fighter - Fighting

You know?

Heart of Darkness is awesome. True genius, it deserves to be up there with AO.

Heart of Darkness has it's moments but some of the gameplay is broken (esp the last level), the plot is just silly (pot-smoking, hippy aliens excepted) and the ending is abysmal. Fun to play once or twice but not a classic by any means.

I get that, but Side-Scrolling Platformer describes those games just as well.

I never could finish it, actually

I'm usually thinking about the stuff on the first disk, the canyons, the swamp, the water caves...

Oh I have thast game!! It is really good I think, except for the ending was too empty ehh.... It is a little childish, but it actually did remind me somewhat of an oddworld style game. Like the strange characters and the feeling of a vast fantasy world. I do remeber never ever being able to get past the part where you have to grow the plants and escape the pools full of pirahnas. I gave up and tried a while later, and I could do it. The game really picks up from there on the second disc.

There's a kinda OK puzzle/action game on XboxLive Arcade called "Wik: Fable of Souls." It's obviously heavily influenced by the Abe games. Worth a look at least.

As far as the living, breathing worlds that the OW games (sans MO) were so great at conveying... well, the only thing I've played recently that had such a convincing in-game world was Half-Life 2.

Not many games have come close to duplicating the sort of... "finesse" of OW's amazing fantasy worlds. Unfortunately.

Thanks for the responses!

To clear it up, by "similar" I mean games that are 2D, with sideview perspective, non-scrolling screens and a mix of action and puzzle solving. I'm less interested in the setting. So basically I'm looking for games with similar "mechanics" or "presentation" to oddworld. You can even post your own games here if you made any. I'm not talking about fangames that are set on oddworld but are realtime strategy. I'm talking about original content and "jump over pit, climb up wall, pull switch, play seek and hide with bad guys, push buttons in right order to defuse bomb"- type of thing.

nate_dog_woof: I'm not so sure about the "side-scrolling" part. It makes me think of games like Super Mario Bros. or Abuse where the background is actually scrolling. In all of the games on my list the backgrounds are static.

SeaRex: Thanks, that gets close to what I'm looking for. But if I see it right each level in that game is a single screen and you can't move beyond what you see on the screen and don't get to explore the gameworld. Nice looking game nevertheless.
