I'm with him. It's one of th emore intelligent forms of music out there for mainstream teenage audiences. Rap... honestly, talking over a beat comiing out of a keyboard? Techno? Rap...Without the talking. These have no skill in the creation of them really.

Heavy metal and hard rock on the other hand, you've got instruments, you've got layers and textures. It's supreme to many other music forms.

To be fair, heavy metal is a step above rap in that heavy metal bands actually PLAY the repetitive and obnoxious riffs and rhythms that make their songs so ear-splittingly unbearable to listen to, whereas rappers use machines to churn out their crappy synthetic tunes. Both are highly overrated.

Repetive and obnoxious my ass. And quoting a radio product like Disturbed to discredit a decades old musical movement is bullshit. Its more than what you hear on the radio for God's sake. Simple songs for simple people. I'm not a big rap guy but I realize that there are plenty of good rap bands that are obvious and plenty more if you care to look for them. What do you guys dig then? The blues?

I do dig the blues. There's plenty of good blues, and plenty of bad blues. There's plenty of good and bad everything. Heavy metal on this forum is incredibly overrated... Have you taken a look at the "What Are You Listening To" topic? Korn? Slipknot? Marilyn Manson for christ's sake? Jesus. I didn't dig most early metal either but it's not as overrated as that bullshit.

Its not so much that heavy metal is overrated but that foreign heavy metal is underrated. If some of the old school and foreign stuff was played I guarantee you that you'd dig it a lot more than Marilyn Manson or Disturbed. Next country is going to get slagged because Toby Keith is a jagoff. Toby Keith reminded me: of something. Don't those magnetic ribbons with "Support our Troops" and "God Bless America" on them make you want to puke. When I see one I try to peel 'em off and slap 'em on gas tanks. Bumper stickers and magnetics are pretty stupid and deface them whenever possible.

I don't think metal is overrated, but I don't particularly like it.

I do like Metallica though, becuase they have some pretty sweet melodies and riffs in between the mindless chords. All of the other metal I've heard is pretty crappy in terms of variation and sound. Maybe I'm listening to the wrong stuff, though. I dunno.

I don't care if it's overrated or not. That means nothing to me. The fact is that the greater majority of "angry" music is so goddamn stupid it is impossible to get anything even remotely interesting out of it. They are angry just for the sake of being angry. And most of them are angry because they know that being angry will convince 14 year old girls who hate their parents to buy it. There are exceptions of course. For hip hop there is a ton of great stuff out there. Mos Def, Pharcydes, Talib Qwali and Jurassic five to name a few. As for metal you have Tool, At the Drive In, Dredg, The Mars Volta, Ministry, and maybe even Sparta. I would never say that everything in a certain genre is crap. Just 95 percent of it.

Old and Not so Tasty I couldn't bring myself to listen the metal bands you listed. Its not my type of thing. Do own some Mos Def and Talib Qwali stuff though, go figure.
Prepare to be offended: Family Guy and American Dad are tremendously overrated. I have a hard time laughing at most of it when I'm not chilling with my friends
Average thing that happens when I watch Family Guy by myself
One of ten trillion gags unrelated to the central plot falls flat
I laugh a little
I think to myself "Why am I laughing? That was pretty lame and random." One more thing thats overrated. DVD box sets that cost 30 to 40 dollars a pop for a season. It especially kills with stuff like Stargate and Seinfeld because both shows have so far nearly ran a decade and the want like 30, 40 bucks for one season. Why do they torture me like this? Only the most hardcore is going to buy them. They should grow a pair and release a box set. And I mean in a big box, 20 30 DVDs of show and maybe 5 to 10 of bonuses for around a 150 or 200 dollars. Please, I'm beggin' here.

Yes, it is. If something is very popular and a lot of people like it, they won't think it's overrated at all. If something's very popular and someone doesn't like it, it will be overrated to that person. There's no possible way to reach a consensus on what is overrated because that would mean most people don't like it, and then it would no longer be overrated.

I don't really understand how you can say a whole genre is being given more credit than it's due to be honest. I've never come across anyone or anything that's ever said that Heavy Metal is in fact stunningly amazing or the saviour of earth or the grace of god or whatever.

If you don't like Heavy Metal then fine, of course it's overrated. EVERYTHING is overrated so long as you don't like it. Because what people say about it will never meet your expectations. How can it? So what's the point in judging something that you dislike by nature?

Actually, the Family Guy season was real funny. American Dad was better than I expected, but still kinda sucked. I remember a funny part, though.

In the intro of the show, the dad picks up the newspaper and it has a different headline every episode. One of the headlines was "Optimist Drowns in Half-Full Tub". I was on the ground on that one.

Mr Underpants said that he was incredibly comfortable. I put on Mr Underpants, but it turned out that he wasn't as comfortable as he said he was. He was still ok, but not as good as he said he was. Therefore, he is overrated. He's the closest a man has ever been to my dick and ass though, but that's a story for another day.
