MM, ever since you posted that video I've been seeing that game literally everywhere.

My laptop is way too shitty to run it well though. I tried playing and it was a huge mess of lag and flying ribs.

I've got to level 42 in Skyrim. I've done a lot of exploring so now I'm checking out all the caves for word walls and loot. Encountered a dozen Falmers and got beaten to a pulp >_<. Want to try and get the perks that reduce the mana cost of those expert spells so I can use them more.

One thing I've done this week is went back to one of my favourite old games from the past, it's called Mad TV and you basically run your own TV studio. It's pretty fun and the random factors make it interesting.

Playing Red Faction: Armageddon. It's .... it's fun. It's really really fun. And stupid. The story is shitty, and there's no originality in the art and the character design whatsoever. And it's unbelievably easy (playing on "Hard". I regret that I didn't set "Insane"), I melee-fight most of the enemies. Assault riffles? Bazookas? They won't even stand a chance against me and my hammer. Also, like in any other RF game, you can break some (many) of the architecture elements. You see a small building with the door opened wide? You never enter it. You make another door (using the same hammer as for dealing with the enemies) right next to it and use it instead.


Oh, and you can repair the stuff you broke. like buildings and bridges. But who cares, really?

Better than Gears of War, mostly because GoW is even duller and shittier. And you can jump here, unlike in GoW.

I'm currently stuck in Brinstar. There's parts of the floor that disappear when you run over them in certain screens, and I haven't exactly figured out how to cross them yet. It's frustrating because There's no instruction or anything, and to get anywhere it's trial and error. Luckily it's actually pretty difficult to die, so there's more than enough room for error.

**Instruction meaning the game starts and I have no idea what's going on or where I'm supposed to go. There's nothing to indicate any of this at all. I have to explore to figure things out and it's so easy to get stuck because you fell down the wrong hole before you got X power up and now you have to restart from your last save. Yay!

Yeah, that's literally where I got stuck every goddamn time. That game is too old school exploration DIY for me. I started with Fusion and Zero, which hold your hand pretty much til the end, playing this was quite a step-up in survival/exploration challenges.

I do want to beat Super Metroid at some point, though. It's just one of those games everyone should play, it seems.

I've finally got to grips with DOTA well enough to try some different heroes.

Venomancer is my weapon of choice; with enough creeps serving as a distraction you can lay down about six Plague Wards next to a tower and take it down in a minute or so. His poison spray thing is great for whittling down enemy creep waves. He kind of sucks against other heroes though, unless he's part of a big push.

Lifestealer is my alternative. He just hops about like a monstrous frog and slaps things to death. High damage and decent attack speed combined with passive vampirism mean that with enough creeps to slaughter he can actually stand next to a tower with no net health loss. He struggles a bit with mana mid-game, but since his main power is just a straight attack speed buff it's not a big deal. In the event that he does get swamped, he can just Infest an enemy, wait for them to move away from danger and then burst out of their backside in a bloody explosion.

Nyx Assassin is a decent fun, but my God does he struggle with mana. I'm too dumb to know the item catalogue inside out, but I'm definitely going to try and find something like a more expensive Sage's Mask that will just straight-out improve his mana regen. His skills are decent fun - erupting spikes to send creeps flying, Vendetta to turn invisible and quickly backstab bruisers, and Mana Burn to incapacitate wizards - but I barely got an opportunity to use the latter two because the former consumed half my mana in one go.

Got plenty more to try, but new heroes don't take as long to learn as I thought they would, which is good.

Meanwhile, it's time for yet another trip to Albie's Pretention Corner: Art Games Are, Like, Totally Art.

The Plan is very much more playable art than an artistic game, and I wouldn't say it's fun in any significant sense. Like many others, it's more an observation on the power of interactivity, allowing you to connect to an otherwise unrelatable protaganist in a short period of time unachieveable in other forms of media. It's not all that exciting, but worth a few minutes of your time to see the payoff of this at the end.

Super Metroid was a truly amazing game for its era that I've given a couple of playthroughs, and yes, a definite classic that everyone should play. I almost wish I had it on SNES back in the day rather than on an emulator several years later, but it's one of those games that benefits from a quicksave function even though it's sort of cheating...

I got the Euro Truck Simulator 2 demo a couple of days ago and found it to be a surprisingly fun driving game. It's got a detailed world and balances out realism with gameplay quite well without taking itself too seriously, and it can teach you a little about speed limits, mirror usage, motorway driving, and reversing a vehicle with a trailer. Which I can't master. :P Dunno if I want to pay £24 for the full game considering how generous the demo is. I'll wait for it to be on sale.

Over the past month and a half, I played through the Mass Effect series. Shame about the ending of 3, but I knew what I was letting myself in for. The rest of it was incredibly awesome though - I wish there were more games with (mostly) decent script writing, that had in depth relations between deep and memorable characters, like ME. The dynamic storyline based on the player's actions was awesome too, even if the changes are minor. In the end, the storyline is what made the series worth playing, since the gameplay itself wasn't really anything special in either game IMO.

Razor: Oh-so-stylish and oh-so-fragile. Has powerful and graceful moves like electrical surge waves and omnidirectional lightning storm that follows him around... but stay the fuck away from towers.

Broodmother: My new favourite. She's like a different game. Put down webs that make you invisible and buff your health regen until you're almost invincible while under them. Inject enemies with eggs. Spawn brood of ravenous spiderlings. When you have about sixteen, swarm offspring across tower to reduce it to rubble in TWENTY SECONDS FLAT. Hide in web while health regenerates. Repeat.

Right now, I'm playing Sleeping Dogs on PS3. Really great game. The combat is very fluid, for what I've experienced and the arcade gameplay style of driving is really good. All in all, a very enjoyable game so far.

I installed Deus Ex Human Revolution on my PC and was amazed at how good it was. The stealth segments were as good as Metal Gear Solid, the walking segments reminded me of the Riddick game and the upgrading system was nicely balanced. In particular it reminds me of System Shock in the way the inventory system works, with the player having to make tough decisions sometimes in order to maximise their firepower. The voices seem great, I particularly like Jensen's. There's just something about a gravely voiced hero which is like Clint Eastwood or Solid Snake and that for me is an awesome bonus.

So I finally got a hold of Aliens: Colonial Marines…

Lot of hype surrounding this game. When I picked it up from Gamestop, I was just antsy to get home and I even invited over a friend to play co-op. Well sadly it did not live up to the hype(no surprise right?). In fact it was really underwhelming.

First of all, the level design started out really nice and well done. GearBox spent a lot of time and effort on the Sulaco and I thought it turned out fantastic. The ship just felt really authentic to the setting. But sadly the layout quickly became very linier and very predictable. After leaving the Sulaco, it just got worse. The rest of the game did not get near enough treatment as the Sulaco did and it suffered because of it. When you reach LV-426, it’s just a bunch of broken copy and paste science facilities thrown down on rocky wasteland. The science facilities themselves are just bland and don’t give you a sense of awe and wonder like the Sulaco did.
Graphics wise, the game was okay. Textures had a hard time rendering at some points and seemed a bit dated to say the least. But they weren’t terrible.

Animation was just god awful. Any epic gameplay moments are quickly butchered by the glitchy and clunky animation of the aliens and fellow marines. You even get a chance to use the power-loader, which was just bad ass! But that was ruined by a terrible pseudo boss fight with lazy left-right punch controls and some glitchy scripted ‘critical hits’.

Allied AI was just fucking stupid. They were fucking useless most of the time and couldn’t kill shit. One of your “teammates” even had a smart gun and he still couldn’t do dick with it. I guess he turned the ‘smart’ function off(hur hur). If they weren’t being useless in a fight, they would just slow you down by standing still and doing nothing, like they were petrified by fear. For once I was praying for the enemy to kill them outright.

Enemy AI seemed solid enough. The Xenomorphs did what they do best. Crawl up walls, pop out of vents, and leap at you just when you’re conveniently reloading. Acid blood is meh. It hurts you when standing over their dead corpse, but doesn’t have any splash damage. They also don’t prioritize enemies very well, because they will always target you over the closest enemy and just flat out ignore them until you’re dead.

Gameplay, it’s your typical shooter. You got your pulse rifle, shotgun, pistol, and few un-lockables. You run through a bunch of corridors and rooms and shoot aliens. Not a whole lot going on. The hand held motion tracker is very cool, but I found myself rarely using it. The aliens were always in front of you it seemed and never tried to outflank you or do anything unexpected. The liner level design made the aliens way too predictable in that aspect. You were just putting yourself at risk by pulling it out.

Overall I like the game for what it is. If you were just looking for chance shoot some Xenomorphs (maybe with some buddies), then this game is for you. Anything beyond that, you might want to think twice. But when comparing this game with the AVP games, this it least an upgrade. I’m convinced that Aliens is just not right for the gaming market. Haven’t played the multiplayer yet. I’m hoping my $30.00 season pass for DLC won’t go to waste…

TL;DR Game was mediocre, wait for the bargain bin.

So I finally got a hold of Aliens: Colonial Marines…
I was watching a YouTube review earlier, from what I heard you get all the weapons really early into the game and they are all very generic. For what it's worth I hear the PC version of the game looks much better, it seems the console ones turned out crap for some reason. In terms of development Gearbox were too busy with Borderlands and a lot of the game is alleged to have been done by a team that had hardly any experience (the long period of development hell doesn't help either).

Storymode length is short (around 5 hours) and you spend a fairly large chunk of the game fighting HUMANS. Yes, in a game called ALIENS you fight against HUMANS. Wow, big twist. I was only barely interested in the game before, now I'll avoid it like the plague.
