Living in Pennsylvania, we don't really have an immigration problem. On the flip-side, living in rural Pennsylvania, there's still the same, old, jingoistic, racist bullshit to put up with. I have to say, I think my school (whether they have a say in the matter or not) has done a great job with the foreign exchange student program. Normally we get Europeans, but this year, I was lucky enough to share my government/economics class with two Koreans and an Iraqi. Certainly a nice dose of new perspective.

As for immigration, I think all the Merkans could use a nice, tall glass of empathy, tolerance, and acceptance. Not saying all the crap that comes with mass-immigration should be overlooked, but just that it shouldn't used to generalize immigrants. I sincerely doubt a lot of Americans would be able to get by in another country if they were under half the circumstances the Mexicans are. Also, the whole "everyone is an immigrant" argument is stupid. That's like saying all blacks are still slaves and all Germans are still Nazis. Ironically, I think Canada has the highest immigration rate in the world right now.

As for internationalization, I guess it's cool. The EU seems to be doing fine.

- If you want to come live in another country with another culture you either adapt to it or you go back to your own damn country.

- If a foreigner who has come to this country causes to much trouble within the first 10 years of his stay his ass is going to be deported right back to the country of origin.

- Complain about taking offense to the culture or habits of our country once and you will be hung, shot, put on fire and then deported.

That sums up my stance on it. And you know what the great thing is? We have a political party here that pretty much shares those exact thoughts and they are the most popular party in the country right now. Operation 'Get the fuck out you annoying immigrants' will begin in a few years. Keep an eye out for the news, we might just be voting for the next Hitler over here. I know I will.

Well you can tell the UK is getting sick of immigrants, apparently there was a big rise in votes for the BNP, expecially in Leeds.

It is getting way of the top, england need to sort who they bloody let in because more than half the population, proberbly, isn't british.

I was more referring to the assimilation part of Havoc's views. Not total assimilation, mind. Of course, I wouldn't have them forget their origins - I absolutely love the multicultural society Sydney has going on, and for the record, was abhorred by the Cronulla riots. A balance between tolerance of the society immigrants are coming into, and tolerance on our behalf of where they have come from is crucial to keeping peace.

Much the same way I adhered to the customs of the places I visited. I whinged in London, was a bitch in Paris, and was (even more so) a drunkard in Dublin.

An example of taking things too far, is the introduction of Sharia courts in England. In my view, it's vile.

It's not compulsory though, is it?

There is a Beth Din in pretty much any city with a sizeable Jewish population but they really only do divorces and conversions. Any legal disagreement between two Jews can be tried under Jewish law in a Beth Din if they both agree to it, but it doesn't happen very often.
