Dynamithix's crappy art corner

I've been browsing fan corner a bit lately (crazy, right?) and I'm astonished at how good some of you guys are at drawing stuff and it sort of motivated me to start drawing again, so yeah, here goes:

These first three are actually kind of old already, I drew them when I had just finished Silent Hill 2 and wanted to try out drawing some disturbing/strange creatures. I think the slug one actually turned out ok.

I believe I scribbled these two at maths class out of boredom, I think the boogeyman looks a bit dull but the head is pretty good in my opinion. The robot's feet are crap, I just can't draw good feet.

This one I drew a while back when I wanted to try drawing some sort of character classes, the classes were the shaman, the knight and the archer, this one turned out the least worst.

These two are my latest ones and probably took the most time to draw, especially the fat cyborg (even though it is still a work-in-production I'd say).

Yeah, uhh, tell me what you think or whatever, I'd love to hear some constructive criticism and what I could improve on. Currently I'm trying to learn how to draw better hands and feet.

They're not disturbing enough. They're only mildly disturbing. Correct that.

They're not crappy enough. I mean, I wouldn't even call them crappy. What did you think when you put them in a "Crappy art" thread? Correct that.

You should try drawing some BoI monsters.

I know you probably think these are just doodles, but stick with it and a style that you would call "art" yourself will soon develop.

I'd say the next step is to find a method of shading that works for you - hatching, cross-hatching, scribble-hatching, blending, block shading, or tiny patterns, whatever. Light and shadow are how we define objects, so as soon as you, like, actually put some on, your drawings will really start to come to life. Ditto for light sourcing. What your teachers told you when you were 13 about looking at how light falls across uneven surfaces is still relevant.

EDIT: I suppose "practice" isn't really very helpful. If you want an actual exercise, something I like to do is to draw one object from multiple light sources, like a sundial. Faces are good, because assuming you're human, you should know roughly what a face looks like.

Imagine each red dot is a light source. Draw eight (or sixteen) faces, one (or two) for each, and draw on shadows where you think they should be. I always struggle with eye sockets. Eye sockets are fucking difficult.

@Dyna these are really good. You can definitely tell the improvement and you can also tell there's still more to come. If you just keep at it you'll only keep getting better and better. Good work, keep it up.

What MM is talking about is studying form. It's not entirely necessary to get a good drawing, but it can enhance its appearance to add an extra dimension to it. The best way to study form is to start with basic shapes. The incredibly common sphere you're bound to have seen at least once in your entire life, while usually a pain in the ass to go out of your way to work on, is actually one of the best "first steps". Using the basic shapes you can get a better feel for what more complex shapes would look like, and me personally, I have to imagine the form before I can even start drawing whatever it is I'm going to draw.

Also, with learning form comes the ability to sculpt. The better you understand form, the better you should be able to sculpt, if you're ever interested.

The only way to get better at something is to just keep doing it. If you enjoy drawing, don't ever stop. Draw what you love to draw most, and keep at it. You're already very good. Might I suggest giving your drawings a wider variety of poses? Try drawing something you've already drawn from a different angle. I see nothing wrong with what you've currently got, but it could be better and I know you're capable of making it so.

And, if you ever get the time, draw something lying around nearby. This is something I actually never do because I'm too much of a lazy piece of shit I have to get myself to go to a class or two so I'm essentially forced to sit down and draw from life.

Oh, and a few other things I wish I had figured out earlier:
-Never be afraid to make mistakes (you can always go back and fix it.)
-You can never "overwork" a piece (it's only finished when you say it is.)
-Base first, details later (make sure your drawing has a solid base before working details in it. makes things so much easier, especially in painting.)

TL;DR: ART.

As for the hands and feet, just draw from yourself and other people. When you're casually browsing the internet take a look at your hand as you do so and observe how it works. Observation does wonders for drawing ability.

Also, keep in mind that pretty much every animal with forelimbs have the same general structure. With an arm + hand you can also draw: a wing. a paw. a talon. a fin. The same applies to leg + foot. It all has the same general parts, you just have to move it around a bit.

I look forward to seeing more!

These are pretty decent, a notch above my own art.

Thanks everyone.

Here are a few more drawings I drew a few days ago.

I tried to draw a sword-wielding cyborg (guess where I got the inspiration, haha), but it didn't really turn out as I wanted. The head is a bit of a mess and the swords look more like daggers but I do think the body is pretty good, I tried to make it look very detailed.

This one started as an attempt at drawing a hanya mask, but it sort of ended up as a hybrid of a hanya mask, some sort of a demon, and Majora's mask, at least I thought so. It sort of failed symmetrically though. It turned out pretty creepy in my opinion.

This is still a work-in-production as you can see. I wanted to draw something really big and don't know why, but the first thing that came to my mind was a huge skull-headed robot, not sure how much this differs from what I originally intended to draw but it looks alright I guess.

Just testing if I can still post in this thread.

e: Ooh, it works. Adding some drawings.

-------

So yeah, it's been some time now since I last updated this thread but now that I finally have some free time I decided to upload some stuff. Most of these drawings are still unfinished because I just haven't had much time to finish them, but I still think a lot of them turned out nicely.

This was an attempt at drawing something similar to the bottom left design of this MGS concept art image.

Back in March I drew a lot of maps and such and this was a result of that. Still sort of unfinished as you can see.

Not sure what this is/was supposed to be, but I guess I tried to draw some creepy looking creatures. Unfinished.

I drew these after playing a lot of Dark Souls. Solaire's the best.

This was just an attempt at drawing some different shaped characters.

Random stuff.

This is just a collage of different little scribbles.

There's no expiry date for threads in Fan Corner. How do you think Design Democracy is still running?

I forgot to post this the last time, but I made a small comic book for my final art course a while ago. I know it isn't anything spectacular, but just putting the whole thing together and drawing it with a black marker took me a lot of time and effort and I'm quite proud of it in a way. Here's the cover for it and here are the links to the pages:

That's all. I know it is very short, but we didn't have too much time to do our pieces.
