New Munch's Oddysee HD screenshots and SWHD on the PSvita

Don't know where to put these so I made a new thread. I suppose we could have this thread for all the screenshots that are released

These were posted on JAW's Twitter recently, Looking very good guys, keep it up!

Also a really cool ad.

Wait... why replace the start screen Munch with the in-game model? What was wrong with the high quality FMV model? That seems inharmonious.

Maybe they didn't have access to it, and so couldn't use a better rendered version of it than the Xbox version? It wouldn't surprise me given what we've heard about the limitations they had changing the game.

If that's the reason, then okay, but otherwise I think using the game model for the menu is a serious downgrade for me. I mean, Munch is the first thing you see when you start up the game, so it seems especially contrary for Munch HD to have a lower poly version of him greet you.

How do you guys know it's the game model though? (Or am I just being thick and didn't read a post that confirmed it was above?)

Besides the fact that it's obviously lower poly, the original Munch head never turned that far to the side. It's definitely the HD game model.

Aaaaagh, that moment when a company you really want to work for is hiring for positions you're working to master but you're not at the skill level necessary for it anyways.

Also, whatever the reason for them using the in-game model in place of the original start screen model, it doesn't bother me very much. It actually looks pretty cool having the head facing in a different direction as opposed to just the frontal view of the face in the center of the screen.

Is it obviously lower poly? How do you know? I'm just curious. Are you sure it's not just the picture of why it looks how it does?

It looks low poly - as in, it's comprised of fewer polygons and looks lower quality for it.

Compare that Munch to this image.

I will admit that he has a bit more depth in the MOHD screen, but I still prefer the old style.

I get what your saying but that could just be the camera, it dosn't look like the picture's in good quality itself. Still lets just wait and see I guess.

I think the HD model looks good on the menu, It doesn't make that much difference to me if they use it.

They might be updating the FMV model but I'm most likely wrong in thinking it.
Extras? The xbox original demo's?

I feel that the difference between the original MO and those pictures is more to do with the lighting than the model. The image is way too small to judge the poly count anyway.

I agree, in fact I think it's good for a change. I think I'd feel a bit dissapointed if, when I first put it on, it looked pretty much the same. I also hope that in this one they make Munch say "Hello" and "Follow me" and all that in the menu, how Abe used to. I was a bit dissapointed that he didn't.

I think the new one looks better even if it isn't the FMV version. Does anyone know how the cutscenes are being handled in general? Obviously they won't be changing the content but I wonder if they had access to high resolution versions of them to use in the HD version.

I still think the original FMV model looks far superior to the HD remaster. Bear in mind that even if we're splitting hairs over polygons and textures, the facial rigging wouldn't be as smooth or complex, resulting in jerky, unsubtle expression. Also, I still think it's incongruous because as soon as you start the game, you see the opening sequence where Munch's FMV model swims right up to the camera.

Graphics has come a long way, but I still don't think the in-game models hold a candle to the incredibly rendered FMV's. If I was playing this for the first time and put this side-by-side with the original, I would assume the original was the HD one (omitting the obvious logo, of course).

Again, I'm going by what I see in the picture. I hope I'm wrong.

I can't tell from that picture, but that's another thing about game renders that poses an issue; the way the light bounces off of them. Even in HD games, the characters tend to look waxy. There's a reason for this that was explained to me recently, and I forgot it.

I think it makes more sense if the in-game model was used for the pause menu, but it seems out of place for the main menu.

Although in munch's case, being an aquatic creature, he would have moist skin. (its a cop out though)

Plenty of aquatic creatures that don't have shiny skin, besides, Munch as amphibian, akin to a frog as much he is a fish, as such, I would expect his skin to have a grimy sort of colour to it, a dull sheen, not glossy though.

A nice touch in gameplay would be if he looked glossier after just getting out of the water, and but his skin would return to it's natural matte over time.

I know this isn't an ideas thread, I was just putting that out there.

I'm no expert, but from what I've heard, it's because natural surfaces like skin and fabric are all made up of multiple layers, each with their own degree of light absorbance and relflectivity. Only really, really swish, ultra-modern software can render all of those layers at once. Most just go for one or two and shove some flat reflection over that.

Again, no expert.
