Indie games

http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/66882

You may notice from now on that I'm kinda into indie games (the only games that surprise me nowadays).

I haven't played this yet though. What do you think?

That review intrigued me. Gonna give this a try.

EDIT: Well that was an epic waste of time and money. All you do is sit in a kitchen, pushing buttons and listening to the guy's sorry excuse for a life, which is probably inspired by the sorry sod who felt the need to make this.

I was expecting some turn in the 'story'. Like that at the end of the night she does eventually show up. Or, and that's how I would have done this game, he just turns out to be some mentally deranged person who is hallucinating or convinced himself that he arranged a date with someone.

Instead you get to play 5 short chapters full of meaningless bullshit, where the only person who can probably relate to it is the person who made it. The story doesn't end with a surprising twist, the guy just realizes he's been stood up 2 hours too late and walks out the door to have a drink with his mates. End of story.

Requesting this gets turned into a general Indie games thread.

To get the ball rolling, Octodad. Here's why you need this game: http://freelanceastronauts.com/view.php?id=970

Octodad was pretty funny (it reminded me of the experimental physics of Trespasser: Jurassic Park) and Oddhunter, I'm with you, I also request a general indie games thread!

Can we sticky it as such?

Well you started this thread, just edit the title to something more appropriate.

There's no real need to sticky it unless it gets amazingly popular though.

That Octodad animation in his human suit flopping around looks hilarious. Is it really fun? It looks kinda different so I would give it a shot.

It's the kind of game where it would be frustratingly difficult if it wasn't absolutely hilarious. The entire control scheme is the mouse.

I'd recommend it; it's a short game with unique controls and is a good laugh. It's also totally free.

Octodad was absolutely hilarious. I wanted to clean the kitchen table and ended up making a mess of things.

(Can I even edit the title? Can I do it just by editing the first post?)

Funny story, during the playtesting of the Kitchen, we found that the players who were actually married had an unnecessary amount of difficulty completing the level. Why? Because they couldn't conceive of throwing things on the floor when Scarlet had asked them to clean up! As such, they painstakingly tidied the whole room. (Equally funny, the un-married all assumed it was okay on the floor).
Also editing the first post should let you edit the thread title.

I'm not married but I do live alone with only 1 parent and a dog so I usually clean everything. It felt kinda stupid to throw everything to the floor like it was nothing .

EDIT: It didn't change the title unfortunately.

Thanks Max.

Anyway, obligatory mention of Braid. It's not the artistic swansong people make it out as, but it's got some damn fine puzzles and a nice art style.

Thanks Max

Braid has been mentioned pretty much everywhere, and it looks great. Too bad I can't currently play it but I still hope to in the future. Glad to know that you also like Indie games Oddhunter, thumbs up!

Have you played machinarium btw? It's great, and the lack of proper dialog makes it all the better .

Machinarium was amazingly beautiful, I enjoyed the crap out of that game. Braid was hugely entertaining, too, but for all its prettiness it didn't wow me like Machinarium.

Well, I feel like sometimes, some of these games tend to get more credit than they should, compared to smaller titles like, for example, cave story.

Some of these games get propelled to commercial-game-like fame, like minecraft.

I hadn't heard of Machinarium before. I'm not really a point-and-click adventure fan, but I might give this a look-in just for the art style.

£14.99's a pretty hefty price tag, though. Good thing it has a demo up on Steam.

It's still 14.99? This was released a while ago, I thought it would be less by now.

You could try and see if there is any good indie bundle out there. Super meat boy had a secret machinarium character in it so interest in the game may have originated some new bundles.

I got it in a Steam Indie Pack for cheap. I'm not sure which one. I also got And Yet It Moves, Osmos, Galcon Fusion and World of Goo. All of them I enjoyed, especially AYiM and WoG.

I bought And Yet It Moves around the time I first got Steam. It's honestly a very well-designed puzzle game, and the last world is probably one of my favourite in any game due to its graphic style.

Does Limbo belong here?

Because Limbo kicks ass.

Surprised Audiosurf and Darwinia haven't been mentioned yet. Introversion are a bit bigger now, but the RTS classic was made on a shoestring.

Speaking of Audiosurf, I just played Flagpole Sitta and it was entirely a perfect 25% downhill gradient. Little developments like that are the reason Audiosurf keeps bringing me back. For instance, A.M. 180 becomes a row of steps. And finding a corkscrew is a magical moment.

Does anyone here regularly checks the indie games blog or tigsource?
