I think it's a bit early in his Presidency for him to be winning any awards for it. It's just another orginisation caught in Obamarama. On the voting page most people seemed to think he didn't deserve it, and so did Barrack himself. I think he's certainly got the potential to earn one, just not quite yet.

As has been said, I don't think that Obama is deserving of this. He's barely been at it two minutes.

Admittedly, it's a bit soon for that sort of thing. All it's going to do is set off the conspiracy theorists who already believe that he is the anti-christ. "The Europeans are uniting behind the beast! The new world order starts now! Next step: Armageddon!!!!"

A common misconception, perhaps the most common concerning the Nobel Peace Prize is that it is given to honour an accomplishment or participation in an event occurred in its entirety and been successful. And it is. But it is also given to encourage people who are doing good things for the world to keep doing them, such as when Mikhail Gorbachev was awarded the NPP in 1990.

With regard to why, specifically, Obama was awarded the prize, the prize committee said this:
:
The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations.
Given this, it is probable that the motivations for the prize committee in giving the award to Obama was encouragement for him to continue with his plans for global nuclear disarmament and not allow them to get lost amid the other problems he's working on right now or otherwise lose interest when the world proves once again that it is ruled and inhabited by bastards.

My thoughts exactly.

I was interested in the idea of social networks getting it for the role they played in the Persian elections.

Too soon for him. Maybe someday after he does a little more peacebringing. Ending a war without killing anybody is deserving of a NPP, saying you want a world without nukes and easing Middle East tension is not. Those are good things to do, but they do not warrent a Nobel Prize.

I say give it him next year instead when he's been in office for longer. It seems abit too soon for him to get this kind of award just yet.

Seems to me like the committee are rewarding good intentions more than practical efforts. I suspect that they, like much of the rest of the world, were swept up in the 'Yes, we can!' ethos and fanboyishness towards Obama.

I think this is good, the whole world pressing America to do shit should hopefully mean that congress has a harder job holding him back.

Obama doesn't deserve a nobel prize, but I don't really care since it doesn't really prove much, there were plenty of presidents who deserved one and never received it.

Isn't it funny how everybody hates congress but they love "their congressman" who they keep reelecting. Obama will never be able to live up to his potential like he said he can't just push a button and fix everything, I understand that.

I can't say much for his worldy affairs since I haven't been following them, I will say this however, Obama hasn't been handling the situation in Iran properly, I love how he just cdame right out and told Iran's president what Iran's nuclear reactors were for, real smooth, oh well atleast Venazuela finally likes us!

Now as for Obama injecting billions of dollars into the economy, once again I can't say much, he may very well have averted immediate catastrophe but I don't agree with this confusing health care reform of his. Maybe some of you could shed more light on it for me since some of you seem to be students of it but from what I understadn Americans will be required to have health care or be subjected to a fine of course the government will have to make health care more affordable now for everyone who can't afford it right...RIGHT?!!

Besides the health care industry pumps millions into congress to sway ther decisions would you pass a law that would hurt someone who gave your family millions of dollars.

I also disagree with government take over of indiustry, sounds like socialism to me, I don't want America to become Cowslip's warren...

Sorry guys I feel like I'm ranting so if you like Obama that's fine, I just don't believe he's going to bring about any real change.

Obama's health care reform is, in its most basic form, an attempt to do away with for-profit hospitals and over expensive health insurance. Right now having health insurance is a choice, whether you have it or not is your choice but if you need massive surgery and you don't have insurance, the bill is for you and it won't matter to the hospital if you need to sell everything you have to pay it. People who do have insurance right now pay like 200 dollars or more a month and if they need and send the bill to their insurance company, they get hit with the coverage book and 10.000 excuses for why they don't want to pay it for you. In other words, if the hospital isn't profit oriented, the insurance companies are.

Obama's intention is to set up national health insurance with fair prices and no 'we don't cover this because of this and this and this' bullshit. That and every single person has to have health insurance by default, no exceptions. I've heard things about doing away with private hospitals completely as well but I dunno about that.

I understand the thought behind it but I feel it's too soon. Next year perhaps, now, no. And if you need a Nobel Peace Prize as an incentive to keep doing good....you really shouldn't be a world leader. Not that I think Obama does "need" the Peace Prize to do good- I think he'll be a cracking President. Just an odd reason.

And yeah, national healthcare has to be a plus. In my experience private hospitals are still better, however free healthcare is better than no healthcare.

Yeah Obama's health care reform sounds wonderful in theory, but what I'd like to know is what exactly constitues "fair prices" fair like car insurance rates? What happens if I don't have health insurance what will the government be allowed to do? We have no conflict of interest though, I agree America's health care system is pathetic at best!

Listen, I've probably gone off topic a dozen times already but let me just say this one last thing about politics...

I used to be a Republican, I did and still do feel like Americans tend to take whatever the government gives them right between the eyes, but I just got sick of all the beauracratic BS. These bums we put in office surround themselves with these so called "advising parties" that are as out of touch with reality as can be, that's why I hate when the government says "affordable" they don't know the meaning of the word. Their advising parties should consist of regular people, not crackpots like me, but some reputable philanthropist making what my parents are making like school teachers or something.

Another reason I got out of politics is because it was becoming a game with me, there's too much of this "stick to your own kind" stuff involved, like "he's a change hatin' republican he can't be right about anything" sticking with a political party not matter what they do just to prove a point has a way of gradually demoralizing oneself and I will have no part of it.
