What are you thankful for?

For those of you who celebrate Thanksgiving, that is my question: What are you thankful for?
I ask this because Thanksgiving this year falls on a very signifigent(sp) day for me, but I won't say until Thanksgiving day.

I'm thankful to all those lovely kind game developers who make absolutely wonderful games. I'm also thankful to all those console developers for making great consoles. And the people who make PCs. Et cetera.

I'm thankful that I'm a Briton (I'm not jingoist or xenophobic; just fiercely proud of my nationality and British mongrel ancestry), and that I live in a well-developed and fairly safe country.
I'm thankful that I live in an upper middle class family in the richest borough in London.
I'm thankful that my parents and my brothers love me, and that my parents have been together for about 20 years now and they're still together; and it doesn't look as though they'll ever split up.

I'm very thankful that I was born in the first place; my mother almost miscarried when she was pregnant with me.

I'm thankful for the NHS. Without it, it's very unlikely we could have afforded my little brother's (he's actually only two years younger than me, but I still think of him as my little baby bro) heart operation, and without it it's extremely likely that he would have died.

I'm thankful I live in a free and demoratic country; we can vote for who we like, say what we like, and leave the country whenever we like.

Most of all, I'm thankful that I'm a human.

I don't celebrate thanksgiving, but I will say what i am thankful for anyway.
I'm thankful for my family, my RL friends (if not very many), my pets, the location where I live (But not so much my house. I hate my house. Sure, I love it's location, but the house itself is in a realy bad state and I don't like it at all.), the wood next door to me, my computer, and I'm also thankful to be a part of this forum, and to have so many online friends.

I'm thankful that I don't live in America, so I don't have to celebrate Thanksgiving... Only joking... I'm thankful for... Well, to be honest, now isn't the best time to ask, since I'm on a bit of a downer at the moment, and have been for a couple of months. Several of my friends went away to University at the end of the summer, so I don't get to see them often, and those that remained don't seem to be able to go out much any more, what with either having jobs or just generally being busy. My friends Ali and Dave just split up the other day, and I just found out today that Jill, who runs my group in Youth Theatre Yorkshire, had been forced to hand in her resignation, for complicated reasons, having led the group for 12 years now...

In the longer term, my parents split up before I can remember, and my Dad's an unemployed drunk who still [probably] lives back in Keighley. I'm not sure, since I haven't seen him for nearly a year.

The Two-Party System in our country has two parties that have very little to tell between them. The piece of legislation that most affects me is that the Student Grant has been abolished, which means I may not be able to go to University. The Government clearly does not want poor people to go on to Further Education. And this is one of the good governments... There are still countries in the world that still have Dictatorships or Oligarchies. Many countries also have rife Poverty, and even our own country has rising unemployment and homelessness...

Sorry about that. Maybe it's a good thing we don't celebrate Thanksgiving in this country...

You'd better ask me again when I'm in a better mood...

As promised...here is mine, but first a tale.

A few years ago my mother was dianogist(sp) with breast cancer. She went through treat and was able to defeat it. But alas...it was discovered that it had gone metastatic...and had invaded her brain. She went into treatment again...During this phase I was deployed to Italy (a perk of being in the military...ugh) and was unable to visit her (the last time I was able to was in Feburary 2000). Finally I came home from my deployment in Aug 00 and started making plans to visit. By this time she was starting to fade...for there was nothing else the doctors could do for her, the cancer was resisting all treatment and it was in a too dangerous place in her brain to remove surgically. Finally I had leave(vacation basically) planned for just after Thanksgiving that year...but...*chokes back a sob* she died...the morning of 22 Nov 00 the day before Thanksgiving. Fortunatly I was able to make special arrangements through the military (they have a special set up for family emerginices) and I flew down the day after to be with my family and to be at the funeral.

Having said this...what am I thankful for?
I am thankful for the doctors who did everything they did for her. I am thankful for the hosiptal's working with my lower-middle class family in terms of payment for all those treatments. I am thankful for the Hospus that made the last two weeks of her life as comfortable as possible. I am thankful she didn't suffer and die in pain. I am thankful that she is now in a better place (heaven or whatever your religion believes souls go) and does not have to live through what we are today (after effects of Sep 11 for instance). I am thankful for the my friends (both my families and my own) that helped me get through this.
I am thankful for finding this forum and all the friends I have gained from it, for I believe it helped me with my healing.

Now for a message to you all. Be thankful for your parents and enjoy them while you can. If one is ill don't hesitate to visit him/her for you never know when they will be taken away from you...for once they are gone...they are gone...

Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone...I know I will try to...

Drag, that is a very touching story. It is very sad, and I am glad you could get through it. It is a good thing that you can share it with the forums...

Now, for my list of things that I am thankful for:
Family (I couldn't get through without my parents, and my siblings)
Friends(Yes, I do have some friends in real life... But I am far more thankful for my friends on the net, oddly enough)
Shelter, and all that crap that helps me live...
Cheese(Cheese is all knowing, cheese is great...)
Baglor(HAIL BAGLOR!)
Now, For the things I am thankful for, but really shouldn't be...
Edgar Allan Poe(My favorite writer...)
Mystery Science Theater 3000(I love this show.. especially the Joel episodes)
Oddworld(My favorite game of all time...)
Computers(No, not for actual useful things, for forums and msn messenger!)
Jhonen Vasquez(I love JTHM, SQUEE, Filler Bunny and I feel Sick)
Millions of other sickening things!

Oh, also... happy thanksgiving all of you crazy mamajamas! Merry birthday! And a happy Christmas at that! Jolly Halloween, too. And a good bonfire night... Not to mention a merry Easter! Oh, yeah, I am thankful for Space Ghost too...

Thanks Dragadon, that was a really touching story. You must be a very strong person, your ability to see the positive things to be thankful for in such situations is really admirable. It makes me think I should be nicer to my mum when she comes home from work tonight.

Some things I am thankful for are my friends, my family, my menagerie, being an Admin of Oddworld Forums and knowing such lovely people here and just beling alive. Cliched perhaps, but it's true!
