abe has a shrykull, what does munch have?

everyone knows abe gets shrykull power. well in MO, will munch have a power to turn into something like a shrykull, or will he have nothing but himself?

There's not alot of point in replying if it's just to say 'I don't know either.'

I know how you feel, though. I hate it when I make what I perceive to be an interesting post and nobody replies.

On the topic in question, my 2p'worth is that Munch doesn't have the equivalent of a Shrykull. If he did I think we'd know about it by now. There's only 5 more months to go until the game's release. *growls when she realises that it's not for PS2 or PC*

well... since munch will have his own moon (wich is kinda crappy) why wont he have a special power 2 ?
abe can posses creatures
munch can posses machines
so the next 1 (forgot his name)will probably be able to posses plants
i hope lorne wont make the games as cliche as that.
but i fear the worst

its not all that clitche if you think about it. what if its a sort of principle of life on oddworld? what if most everything has the mental capability to posses things. weve already seen three intelligent forms of life there.

I think we cannot compare Munch to Abe like that.
Abe, as a mudokon, has a spiritual beliefs and mystical powers.
Munch, as a Gabbit, maybe are not into getting in touch with spiritual forces of nature and stuff.

I guess Lorne Lanning wouldn't want to develop that idea with other creatures of Oddworld. Gabbits, as Munch, are a totally different species, compared to Mudokons. Gabbits are inteligent creatures, but they don't have the social and religious complexity of mudokons. They just swim around in packs, having fun and appreciating the beauty of the underwater life, very happy.
I read in one of Lorne's interviews that Gabits don't build underwater villages or anything like that. They just live a wild and free life, well at least until the Glukkons started to hunt them down.

I compare Oddworld's Gabbits as our Earth's Dolphins. They are very inteligent, maybe as inteligent as ourselves, humans, but they just swim around, having fun, without much worries(something we should do more often, hehe).

In other words, I don't believe Munch will have nothing compared to Abe's Shrykull, because that's not the point of the game, as Much is a totally diferent species

One more thing: the next heroe, Squekky, or whatever he is called, wont possess plants, I guess he wont possess anything. I expect to see a completely diferent character, nothing that remind us Abe, or Munch.

Well, in the original plan for Munch's Oddysee, Munch was supposed to have Roid Powers, the exact way that Abe has Shrykull Powers.

And why did you bring up a 5 year old topic?

Oh well, I might bring up some interesting conversation about Roid.
I'm correct, aren't I Dipstikk? I'm almost 100% that thats is what Roid was meant to be.

According to the book, Roid is an alter-ego of Munch, both mentally and physically. Like a split personality, but one that takes an actual form. This metamorphosis was caused by Vykker-made steriods; Munch was originally supposed to be a steroid test suject in addition to what they did to him in the game.

It's like the Hulk: when Munch gets pissed enough, he changes into the form of Roid, which is a complete paralell to Munch. Munch is small, kind, reserved, and quiet, while Roid is large, angry, noisy, and violent. This change from Munch to Roid also gives Munch super strength and invulnerability. It wears off over time, though.

That's what I thought.

I wonder if you could change (If it were in the game) to Roid anytime that you wanted? That might make it too easy though.

Kinda' like Peter Puppy from Earthworm Jim.

This thread just reminded me of how sad it is that Munch's Oddysee had to be restricted and that Lorne wasn't able to do everything he would have wanted to with MO.

Cullen,
This is just speculation, but I think Munch's transformation to Roid would have been uncontrollable, and based on his emotions alone; this would have probably been a new gaming element in the vain of the emotions of Modokons in Abe's Exoddus.

Yeah, good thoughts.
I dont think that you would be able to contol either. I think they would probably show the transformation with a roar, just like Shrykull.

That's exactly right and one of the major reasons it had to be removed from the game. Much too complex to code and base gameplay around than time constraints would allow for is my understanding.

Everything we know about Roid is in the book, so if you want to know everything of it, support OWI and buy the book

The transformation of Roid may have been semi-scripted: at certain points the game forces the transformation, while at other points you have the ability to intentionally piss Munch off, just as in the first games you have limited ability to turn into Shrykull, but you don't have to.

Or perhaps you would have to earn the ability to become Roid by (for e.g.) locating and taking steroids. This would be similar to Abe earning the ability to become Shrykull by saving muds in special portals and Cyprien in Evil Twin becoming SuperCyp after collecting magic masks.

Munch turning into Roid ingame sounds cool now, but if it were included, I'd just see it as a gimmick. There would be this one thing in the level that 'pisses you off', and it would be the same for every one.

EDIT: Holy crap, this thread is from the dawn of the "Joe Not Being A Cunt" age.

I'm not sure about the Roid thingy... I'm sure all the game critics would have screamed around that this is similar to Hulk.

That's the thing I don't like about the Roid idea.

Thing that annoys me is that Roid seems to be a metaphor of Munch's anger projected into the real Oddworld. I can understand Abe transforming into Shrykull because of mystic, supernatural powers, and I can even appreciate Sligs' bone structures being permanently altered by steroid treatment, but I can't cope with Munch somehow changing so drastically just because of a drug. Stretches the realms of plausibility a bit.

Now that you mention it, the introduction of Roid into Munch's Oddysee would have meant a lot of elements in that game revolving around the usage of steroids. A bad time to be introducing Big Bro Sligs alongside Munch's alter ego.

Although, it might have explained their presence even moreso, showing the Vykker's recent obsession with steroid treatment on various life forms and how it effects species differently. I don't see why they'd risk something like that on the last known Gabbit in existance however, or what purpose it could possibly serve them. The sonar was somewhat justified at least.

And you are, of course, right Max. Steroid treatment physically altering Munch's body in that way is a huge stretch. I'd prefer it to be explained by testing with a fictional substance than steroids at the very least.

The details we've had are sketchy at best so perhaps they are something fictional but OWI just described them as 'steroids' to give us something to relate to.

hmmm I guess the idea sounds so poor only because OWI didn't develop it much since they couldn't put it into gamleplay...

They could have done something truly unique of it I guess

Sad

Do we have a picture of Roid?

Just another thing removed from Munches Oddysee...

Even if it was steroids, which I doubt it is, it is Oddworld it doesn't have to make much sense.

The only place that we have seen a picture of Roid was in the Art of Oddworld book, which means that we cannot scan and post it.

Go buy the book. You won't regret it.

even if it's on oddworld, it must not be unbelievable, that's just what's nice about the world Lorne created, it's that most of it is coherent and can be explained.
