What do you think about techlepathy?

Definition = here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Techlepathy

I'm not sure what to think. I'll post when I've formulated a viewpoint.

Express your views!

I don't know what techlepathy means, so I'll not care to learn the word because of it's large size and hard pronounciatation...so, I'll stick to my 'me's' and 'you's' for now.

So THAT'S where the Borg came from.

I dunno. I see it as the next step in evolution. If humans can't do it by progressing in morality and social ethics then we can do it through technology.

The ability to communitcate thoughts directly to others with technology. Hmm... the human race is getting very lazy.
I understand that it could be useful for people who cannot talk, or cannot talk clearly but as for the rest of us I think that talking is a little better.
After all, there are some people's minds that i would not want to enter under any circumstances.
But it may also lead to more understanding between people. I mean, if you can't express something with words, you could send the thought directly to another without too much hassle.

Still, this kinda borderlines between incredible genius and incredible laziness.
Got mixed emotions on this one.

Are we discussing this from a purely philosophical point of view or are we pretending that this sort of thing will be technologically feasible at some point in the future?

Because if you say the latter, then I shall respond with a "Bah" and a "Phooey!"

Did you read the thing about three stages? Stage 1 (communicating with words) as you say is a bit lazy as it is basically just an implanted mobile. But Stage 2 (communicating voluntarily but with pictures/smells/tastes/whole thoughts/non-verbal sounds) would remove language restrictions, thus removing language barriers and removing restrictions imposed by lack of words or things which it is inappropriate to describe in words, such as smells. Stage 3 (communicating subconsciously, thus effectively fusing several minds into one)...I'm a bit uncomfortable with the idea of a hive mind, although it would be mmore productive for the human race as a whole. It sort of reminds me of Julian May books, where all people are required to experience basically stage 3 telepathy (they also make a lot of unscientific assumptions)

Um...we already have the technology to develop stage 1 telepathy, or at least a rudimentary version of it. Stage 2 would require significant advances in neuroscience and microsurgery, as unlike stage 1, it requires cracking the code of the brain and putting implants in. Stage 3 is not much of a leap beyond Stage 2, but is likely to be illegal for quite a while, as not many people want to be outclassed by collectives and possibly forced to join them.

That's Stage 1. Stage 2 is more than an email, as sensory information and entire thoughts can be transferred. Stage 3 is subconscious fusion, which basically creates a hive-mind.

Ever seen the Voyager episode Unity? That is 3rd stage telepathy without the craziness factor experienced by most SF collectives

I would quite like my own "Point-Of-View-Gun". So long as it can work over the Internet.

But if you can turn it off at will, or just transplant thoughts, pictures and non-vocal ideas, then it's pretty much the final iteration of mobile communications technology. At least in terms of what we can, given the nature of the concept, laughingly call "conventional" communication (no time travel here!).

That happens with married couples and other people who know each other really well. It's just to do with knowing how someone's mind works as well as recognising their body language.

Twins aren't psychic, end of story. Don't argue back, that's not what this thread is about.

I think this would be cool, if we could do it by choice. Step 2 would be awesome. Step 3 is the worst idea I've ever heard in my life. If that were to happen we would no longer be human. We'd be ****ing ants.

Me and my best friend can do that. But it's more that we've known each other for so long and we can just read each other by now.

Secrets would be a thing of the past, and trying to control people would be the new "thing".
I mean, people would start to confuse their thoughts for other's (in my way of imagining it...) and soon no one would have their own way of thinking.
And yes, Step 2 would be very convienient. It would allow people to understand more things and so on and so forth, but that third step just takes the fun out of life... Sure it'd be more "productive", but I like unique personalities more than effectiveness. Plus the idea of being an ant sounds a bit... stupid.

It wouldn't take the fun out of life, it would just take life to a new stage. Like how some people like sugar in their coffee and some don't.

There is no such thing as evolutionary ladders, evolutionary leaps, or evolutionary steps. Pokemon or X-Men are not accurate biological documentaries. Also, biotech is a bunch of vaguely defined, unviable garbage with about as much merit as telekenesis and Kirlian fraudtography. Also, as for the matter itself, I think abandoning one's physical body and becoming a data stream is a much better option.

Maybe at this time, but there are many areas of society that are laying the foundation for such a concept to be realized.

Yeah, until the power goes out.

http://wiki.cotch.net/index.php/Evolutionary_ladder
Evolution works by gradual slow mutation, not spontaneous leaps. Evolution is not a preset Pokemon-like path, it is a series of gambles with random mutations being favoured through natural selection. Even if you waited for a trillion years, ants will never evolve into shrews. Chimpanzees will never evolve into humans. And so on. In evolution, the only "ladder" is in better adaptation to your environment. There are no lower or higher animals.
