lying

one of the earlier research groups to study animal languages studied a sort of monkey(either that or chickens my memory if fuzzy) anyway they heard one of the animals make the call for "over here" when there was nothing to be alone with a female thus proving that animals can lie. the gap shortens.

Richard Dawkins said in The Selfish Gene that animals can lie. He talked about some birds that give a signal that means 'look out, hawk!' when there isn't one for the purpose of scaring everyone else away so they can get more food.

well it might be either. monkeys were the first animals that they did language testing on but chickens are mentioned alot because every one thinks thier stupid. I wonder how smart chickens are.

Chickens are just acting stupid until the one day that they're ready to rise to power and TAKE OVER THE WORLD! Just look at chicken run (Mel Gibson is the chicken's secret leader...)!
Eh, so animals have been lying for a long time. Just look at my dogs; they bark at the door to have me let them out, then when I finally get up and open the door, they just kinda look at me as if to say "What the hell are you doin' that for?"

That's really interesting....
you know, i once came across a site about how lobsters were really an offworld (not oddworld) alien race, and they sent their criminals here...you know since earth is so terrible.
well on the site, (it was beign written from a lobsters prospective..how a lobster could type i'll never know)
and he was against their criminals being killed and eaten..it was quite funny.
i hvae no idea what this has to do with lying animals, but the thought sure popped into my head.

I'd say that chickens are underestimated. I had two pet Bantam hens (currently only one, God rest Patty's soul) and they had distinct, complex personalities.

And lobsters have been observed to show noticable signs of distress when seperated from their families.

I am relying purely on an episode of Friends for this, so don't hold me to it, but don't Lobsters also mate for life?

I looked up something on lobsters and it mentioned nothing about mating for life.

The American and European lobsters are characterized by an enlarged, almost bulbous, pair of pincers or chelapeds; the chelapeds of the Norway lobster are relatively longer and thinner. In the true lobsters these are enlarged "claws"; one is usually a heavier crusher claw and the other a smaller biting claw. The head bears two pairs of antennae; the eyes are compound, and the tail is fanlike. The female lays many thousands of eggs, usually once every two years, and the tiny young drift and swim for up to five weeks before settling on the bottom. They grow by molting and may live for about 15 years.

That was the lobster "I" Was talking about Steve.

well I may be wrong but 50 was the maximum any we know of has ever lived so it could have been a different species and treated with a lot of care.

Even 4 weeks is a little too long for a chicken to live without its head. Try 4 days.

I'm not just saying that because it sounds silly, either. There is a practical reason for my dubiousness: Without a head, the chicken would be unable to eat, and would therefore starve before too long, even if it does not die of blood loss or lack of a brain. I believe what we are labouring under here is an Urban Myth.

Cockroaches, on the other hand, have been known to live for several months without a head. If properly cared for, they will continue to function until they die of starvation. In fact, it has been proven that Cockroaches actually show more signs of intelligence after decapitation than before: headless cockroaches learn about 60% faster to avoid getting electric shocks from live wires...
