Tim Burton is a Golden God

I have, for many years, held this truth to be self-evident. I have seen Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Monkey Bone, Mars Attacks, Planet of the Apes, and Big Fish. And every one was brilliant. Now, just today, I watched Edward Scissorhands for the first time. It is impossibly good. I'm not even going to try to show emotion with emoticons, capital letters, or exclamation points. No combination thereof could fully express how good these movies are. Tim Burton is, hands down, the best director whose work I have ever seen.

I implore you to flood this thread with declarations of your adoration of this man and his work, discuss his movies, and, if you know of any really good ones that I didn't mention, make a note of them. Oh yeah, Danny Elfman's pretty good too. They make an awesome team.

Unless Tim Burton has sunk to a new low and IMDB is wrong, then he never had a thing to do with Monkey Bone, stupid.

He's over rated. Not only that, but he's a total snob.

Thanks for the post. Your contribution means a lot to me.

Yes, Monkey Bone was entirely Henry Selick's baby. In all honesty, Tim Burton is a genius, but like DI said he's actually a real prick. I enjoy most of his movies, but his artwork is terrible. I have his book "The Melancholy Death Of Oyster Boy" and his art is just above that of a 9 year old. His poetry is surprisingly dark though.

He's OK.

But seriously, where the hell is all this NBC merchandise coming from? I mean, the movie came out in '93, why is everyone just taking notice of it now? Maybe I'm just bitter because I actually saw the movie in theaters when I was a kid and... you know... grew up watching it. Curse my bitterness.

Big Fish was pretty good. I have the movie poster for it.

Since the Special Edition version was released, people (especially the increasing number of goths) started to pick back back up on it and publicity demanded more merchandise. Plus, with the upcoming release of the NBC video game, they want to get people interested.

Well, 2003 was the tenth anniversary of NBC, and they are still making merchandise now, for the reasons that SS mentioned.
When the movie came out, they had NBC action figures, but very few toy tores would carry them because they were too scary for kids.
And I agree, Tim Burton is a genius. I was never aware that he made Mars Attacks, though. I used to watch that movie all the time when I was five, as well as NBC.

The only 'new' NBC merchandise I ever sunk low enough to buy was a silk 'workshirt' that has the production art of Jack on on the left side, metal buttons with his face on them, and the back has a picture of the haunted mansion at disney land redone in the halloweentown theme they go with every halloween/christmas.

I like the shirt a lot.

Happy

When the NBC merchandise came out, I wasted my Birthday money . I have two small figures of Jack and Sally from 1999, and a figure of the guy with an axe in his head (God, what was his name?)
I Am HAPPY!

When the NBC merchandise came out, I was glad that I could have some clothes that were NBC related. I got 2 shirts and 2 pairs of socks.
Sounds like someone being interviewed for the new Nuclear-Biological-chemical attack suits.

Monkeybone wasn't a Tim Burton? WTF? What movie am I thinking of then? Hmmmm. Okay, guess I just spaced. You have to admit, though, the style of art in Monkeybone is a little Burton-esque.

I actually have not yet seen any NBC merchandise that looks like it's worth buying. If I saw something really cool I would buy it, but I've only seen lame accessories and a badly made shirt and one of those flap bag things.

Is Burton really that bad? Wow. I've never heard or seen anything about him as a person. That's really hard to believe. I kind of assumed that his work, specifically the stuff like Edward Scissorhands and Big Fish, was somewhat of an indicator of what kind of a person he is. Oh well. I'm going to go check out that list of his movies again.

I met him and Danny Elfman in a hollywood nightclub/restaurant. They approached me and my lady friend to ask if we could swap tables as they were being harassed by everyone around them [we had a fairly secluded table].

I told him that we had already begun our meal, and it would be too much of a hassle to pick up our food and walk across the restaurant; but he and danny were more than welcome to join us.

Keep in mind, this is the second time I've met the guy, and the first time I've ever held a conversation with him. They sat down with us, and right away, Tim was criticizing the majority of his fan base.

I brought up that if he held such high standards for his fans, then he never should have agreed to sell his merchandise at hot topic. At which point he and Danny flagged down a waitress and had us 'escorted' out of the club for 'sitting at their table and hounding them'.

Total. Snob.

No. I honestly don't think he's that talented either. He has no right to be such a total ass-goblin. Any goth that has the same interests when he's 30 and the drawing ability of a child could take his place. Honestly all Tim Burton is is an adult goth who spent years of writing poetry and somehow got famous for it. I will admit that his talents lie in his poetry, but he's no artist.

DI - your post completely floored me. I mean I'm speechless. Well almost.

I like Tim's work..I've like the TB/DE partnership. Loved Big Fish, and one of my favourite movies is The Nightmare Before Christmas. Watched Frankenweenie on that DVD, and his Internet cartoons about Stain Boy.

It's too bad he's such a nasty man..and I'm trying to think of nice words to use based on the story you just told.

If I honestly felt the need to impress people like you, Claire, don't you think I'd come up with something a bit more noteworthy?

I know you can't quite get used to being a dullard with nothing interesting to say, but honestly, it works for you.

There's some serious spamming going on up in heyah. I don't usually mind it, but it's becoming a little annoying.

Well Burton sounds like quite an asshole, but I maintain that he has talent. Edward Scissorhands and Big Fish are two of the best movies I've ever seen, and not one of the other movies of his that I've seen isn't among my list of top movies. Hmmm granted, I haven't seen that many... I should watch a few of those. Anyway. He's a good director.
