When will video games eliminate movies?

It seems that movies are on a sharp downhill, face-first descent while video games are enjoying more success than ever. Its a fairly well known bit of trivia that the video game industry makes more money than the movie industry. Video games are become much more plot driven, smart, and interactive. Its now possible actually speak commands and play with people from all over the world. The day of mindless button-mashing and splatter games is over. People want depth and games that make them think and press their emotional buttons. OI has realized this and in my opinion their games have become more immersive and fleshed out. Though high end concepts like Hand of Odd probably won't make it to the Xbox, games like Hand of Odd most certainly will be produced for PS3 and Microsoft's and Nintendo's new systems. Quite frankly, if I was a movie producer I'd be terrified. In less than a decade we've gone from Sonic the Hedgehog to Solid Snake, Master Chief, and Abe. Following Moore's Law rather loosely video game consoles will be over 200 times as powerful as they are now and with all of the advances made in processing every day I wouldn't be surprised if they were to become 300, 400, 500, or maybe even a thousand times as powerful!

The Video Game Industry sure is growing, but I highly doubt it will replace movies.

Anybody who thinks movies will ever dissapear has never seen a good movie. Video games and movies are completely different things. Video games will dissapear before movies if that ever happened (which they never will). I meant no offense, for I'm sure you were just trying to get the point across that games are getting really good.

I truely, sincerely, hope that OW wait for Xbox 2, or use the PC (which is better for an rts).

I disagree with Mojoman, the next level of movie entertainment could be a wierd hybrid between the two, but it being interactive will of course be more game than movie.
If one was going to go or get inter-bred into the other, it'll be movies that get ditched.

film will always stay constant video games are always improveing.

Movies really havent changed a whole lot since its birth in the early 20th century. Whats changed in film is how films are made nowadays and the quility of film. Everything is digital now but the same concept putting that materal on film to make a movie is still the same. Its still projected onto a screen through a projector. If anything changed its all fully atomated now. There is nobody up in the room running the projector anymore because its real suffisticated equipment that can perform the digital qulity you see on the big screen.

And if anything that would be improved in film is createing movies completely on a CD like disk a DVD instead of film. Like instead of haveing a film strip the movie would be recorded on a CD disk which would be placed in a new type of projector that would project a digital holographic image on the screen instead of film electronically. Mainly when somebody makes a movie they will use these disks in their camera instead of the traditional film. I defenitly see film being replaced by small holograghic disks. Theaters would no longer need a projector room because the images would be electronically sent from this new machine through wires onto a special type of screen. No light envolved a computer and electronic signals. Sort of like e-mail. The special screen would be getting you can e-mail from this machine telling it to project the images and show the movie.

I'm not saying replace, but dominate. How soon until you take your date to an arcade instead of a movie theatre. And the emotions and thought that used to be the sole domain of movies and books are being appropriated by video games. Pretty soon, a completely passive movie like Citizen Kane or Casablanca, though cinematic marvels, may seem old-hat compared to the experiences that can be had from video games.

I think it will stay seperate. Because games are a different medium than movies. But in this day and age games are becomeing more and more like a motion picture. But I strongly believe movies will always remain as a place to go on a Friday night and video games and arcades will become more attractive as they litterally become an interactive expierence like the Holo deck on Star Trek. Where you tell the computer to make a set interactive world where you can go in and simply escape or have an adventure. Like you can tell the computer set a scene in the ociean on a huge ship rageing through a big storm. Create Metal Gear envirorment. Or create Rupture Farms. and the big doors open to another world. Now that is a video game! And while your playing you can tell the computer to end program and save it so you can go back to your world.

Imagine playing Oddworld on the Holodeck of the Enterprise! Actually going to visit Oddworld through Holographic imagery. Actually walking into those envirorments phisically and being able to touch the holograms because they are solid forms of light. Now that would be absolutely remarkable.

Infact I don't think we are that far from actually creating a Holo Deck. The question is how do you manage to hold light in place through microscopic energy sources like micro force fields? How do you create a force field?

We have lazors. if we can somehow invent a solid invisible field of energy then we can create a Holodeck which would trap light in sort of microscopic force field containers.

ou just do not go to Arcades. Ever. If you want to play games, play at home or at someone elses or at tourneys etc. Never at arcades..

Hello!

where, do alot of movies get their ideas from???

now, a good idea for me is a vidaplex, where it is like a theatre exept every one has a screen and plays a big multi-player game
that is maybe as close as it will go to replacing movies
