Smiley-face Mudokun secret places in Abe's Exoddus!

I just figured something out! Everywhere in Abe's Exoddus there is a pile of brew bottles there are secret areas. I just have one question about it. Why?

Everytime I stab my eyes with an ice-pick, I can't see shit. Why?

Sometimes there are Brew Bottles but there is no secret near by so it doesn't work all the time.

The only thing that I can imagine it symbolizing (besides indicating a secret area) is the worker Muds empty brew bottles that they get for free as pay.
