Attention-Seeking

I don't know about any of you, but I for one am sick of all the attention-seeking going on on the forums. If it's not Mr. Donut saying stupidly controversial things, or Abe333 pretending he's committed suicide, then someone posts one of the oft-posted "I am leaving the forums" topics.

Well I say enough. From now on, I say that if anyone posts a topic saying that they're leaving the forums, they should be Banned to make sure they bloody well do! If they then send one of the admins an email saying they want back in, the admin should just send a gloating email back again... [and unban them, of course: I'm not THAT strict...]

And as for the rest of the attention-seekers: Just grow up.

I second that!

I've left boards before, and I'd like to say to all those who want to leave: Just do it. Just go without leaving a goodbye message. It goes down much better.

The bigger a place becomes, the less your noticed. I think it goes down to the "new baby syndrome". You know the one. When a new Baby is brought into a family the kid seems as though he isn't importain any more so the kid dose stupid things to get attention. Even if it means getting into trouble for it. I think the same is going on in here. With new members joining up every day it's hard to get you screen name noticed. So you post stupid topic to do so. It's like when a newbie replys to every topic made in the last 30 days but just saying "yeah, I agree" or something like that. Yes, it's anoying, but at least your well know. I think it's bound to happen at any larger type Message board. But the problem is, you can't get rid of it.

Mann every time I go on the computer and that is at least twice a day I see new people joining. Its like there is a line streatched all around the world trying to get in here. It happens every time I go here in the forums and that is twice a day. I don't think there is going to be any room left. I know what you mean I get critisized by these new people all the time for posting just my topics. They think it is true so they critisize me about it. That really makes me feel angry! I mean comeon there is nothing wrong with haveing an imaginenation. Somebody has to talk to these new people. They are abusing this forum and that is not good. Maybe there should be a limit to how many people should join in a month at least. I don't know this has to be resolved some how or this forum is going to lose some people!

You see I see this as a doubled edged sword. On one hand it's good that alot of people come here because there is more opinions to go around, more friend to make and more topic to be brought up. But the problem with this is More usless threads, less popularity and the loss of that tight nit community. So each direction has it's positives and it's negetives

I was joking and now my "Eibu is leaving..." topic has become a forum for me to express what's currently going on in my life that I like to share for whatever reason which is usually to get it out of my system.

Its both pathetic and disturbing when someone fakes suicide on a forum for attention.I read the topic awhile ago and he even registered a new account on the forum and emailed some people here... HA! little did he know Abe Babe and the gang has the incredible power to read IP's!

I think, to get rid of all these 'one-hit-wonders' and people who never post, thus freeing up space on the server and possibly helping to recover that close-knit 'community' feel this place once had, the admins should delete all accounts that remain inactive for, say, a month. Or 90 days, which a lot of account-based websites seem to choose.
The only exceptions should be if people say in advance that they're going to be leaving for a couple of months due to holidays, studies etc.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with an 'I'm leavin' topic as long as its true. Like, I myself posted a topic that I would be leaving unless I found a new ISP. Which I did. I followed my post's content and did not break it.

Because, if they don't want to leave, it's considered polite. And if they're leaving for a purpose and they say what that purpose is, it's a good chance to try and pull the Forums together into a better society so we can please its members and visitors more.

But you're right, people who draw excess attention to themselves are not in the right by doing negative things.

Honestly,
Max

A novel idea, but to be honest, a single, rarely used account doesn't take up much of the server's space at all. I'm fine with having a large number of abandoned accounts, but I agree that Oddworld Forums have lost the tightly-knit sense of community we once enjoyed. I think we can overcome it though.

As for attention-seekers, it is rather pitiful that a member might fake a suicide and create a multiple username to break the news to us. I have sympathy for such creatures.

Yeah, that sort of thing is fine, I'm not objecting to genuine topics, it's when people just say they're leaving so that people say "No, Don't Leave" that irritates me...

I don't think THAT is a good idea. People can leave because they just want to leave for a while, get bored of the forums (don't ask me HOW!) or something. Imagine that you haven't posted in a while and want to come back. And that you found your account deleted!!!! Urgh.

:

I totally agree. When I arrived, I was member 258, (and I stil am.) and the forums were much more calm. If you leave the forums for 10 minutes and you come back, there will be a lot of new posts. Back then, you could wait for more then an half our.....

I saw the community and slowly become part of it.

Now, it's slowly dissapearing. We need to refind our community feel.

And you know ODDBODD is gone too? He left because the forums had lost their identity, he thought. (Although, he sometimes comes back. Look at the "Abe333 committed suicide" topic.)
