The Hobbit Thread

So I'm sure my fellow geeks have been having nerdgasm after nerdgasm over the newsfeed on The Hobbit movie. Or maybe not, as we're all getting old and miserable.

Multiple images have been released, including a sloppily photoshopped promotional picture of the dwarves.
So far, I'm pleased with the casting.

I'm also happy that Jackson took over for Del Toro. This is PJ's territory, and even though Del Toro surely would have brought some stunning visuals to the table, I think his direction would ultimately make the film inharmonious with PJ's vision of Middle Earth. And truthfully, I think Del Toro's character direction sucks balls.

They're splitting the film into two parts, as I'm sure you already know. The first of which is subtitled "An Unexpected Journey". A bit ballsy of them to take titular liberties, but it certainly sounds better than "Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows; Part 1".

The LOTR films were running alongside two other sagas; The Matrix and Harry Potter. I was one of the LOTR guys.

LOTR forever, I can't wait for this to screen, it's one of the only films I want to see on the first day it is open to the public. 2012 gonna be good.

Took 'em a while. I knew for a fact the Hobbit film (or in this case, films) would follow LOTR.

2012 shall be good unless the world ends, then I'll be sad.

Attached to Del Toro were some of his mainstays. Namely Ron Perlman and Doug Jones, who both look like they could fit right into the LOTR universe. But I think with Del Toro's departure, they also dropped their names from the project. Probably not a huge loss, but I do love me that Perlman and his sexy caveman brow.

Howard Shore will also be back to compose the score, reprising the major themes from LOTR and penning some new ones.

And of course, dear ol' Gandalf...

Stephen Fry and Brian Blessed are also involved in the film.

Dumb.

Apparently the film will be in 3D, and will be the first film to be shot with a new kind of camera that films at 48 FPS instead of the traditional 24.

The film is in two parts, the second was originally composed to be a bridge film between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. I think this idea was kind of shitty, especially if it means essentially just making shit up to fill a gap. I'm glad they scrapped it. It probably would have been necessary, in order to create a transitional compromise between Del Toro and Jackson's differing styles. Now that PJ is doing the whole thing, they can keep it pure.

Pretty excited for this. Trying to equally split said excitement between this and The rumored Dark Tower film[s] and mini-series [which was apparently just scrapped by universal], but it's hard.

I've not been following this as much as I should have. But I'm glad because it means I won't have anything spoilt for me before I watch the film. I must also remind myself I need to read the book.

I am very excited for this movie. I'm glad most of the cast of LOTR is returning. It wouldn't work if all the cast was diffrent.

Just cheaked IMDb and holy cow Stephen Fry is going to be in it!

That was the original idea, but I think the plan now is to just split The Hobbit in two.

I still want to see Del Toro's Hobbit but Jackson is the safest bet for this franchise.

They are adding things. In the book Gandalf would fuck off for no reason, and we only get snippets of what he was doing in various appendices. They'll expand on it in the film, with him, Radagast and Saruman meeting, presumably to discuss the Necromancer of Mirkwood. The banishing of the Necromancer with be in the films, though I'm not sure where. In the book it happened several years afterward, before Gandalf and Balin came back to visit Bilbo.

I think the banishing of the Necromancer was in the original plan for the second film. It might have been taken out, now that they're sticking more closely to the book.

So, who exactly are the other two wizards and did they help Gandalf and Radagast against the Necromancer?

Alatar the Blue and Pallando the Blue. They're in the Far East and don't show up.

Book+. Benedict Cumberbatch is voicing Smaug and the Necromancer. Sylvester McCoy is Radagast the Brown, and Christopher Lee and Cate Blanchett return as Saruman and Galadriel.
