Horse Riding

Just wondering what you guys think about the following.

My GF has been fanatic horse lover since she was little apparently and still regularly rides horses these days. Her entire room is full of horse posters and stuff, you get the idea. She loves horses (almost ) as much as I love tigers.

Personally I think horse riding is one of the most hypocritical ways to treat an animal, ever. I go to the riding school with her many times, even rode myself a few times. But I always cringe at the way the girls, young and old, treat the horses there.

Picture, if you will, that these horses are standing around in a 2 by 2 stable, being ridden by 5 to 6 people each day. If you had any kind of respect for these animals you would consider the fact that at some point the horses would like a break and might not be so cooperative when they don't want to be ridden. First thing that happens when a horse doesn't do what the rider wants? They get yelled at and slapped.

Other horses have just been dumbed down, doing whatever they are told because they don't know any better. With those horses they tell me 'see how good this horsey is? Doesn't fight at all, he loves to ride all day!'. Seriously? They're not tigers but I can see emotion in horses too, they are not enjoying it you hypocritical bitch. Yes some do enjoy riding, but more often than not I see boredom and sadness in the horses there.

Reason I bring this up though, is because I'm texting with my GF right now. She's in a meadow trying to catch a horse that's allowed to freely graze and she's pissed at her because she doesn't want to be caught and ridden. She just runs around and messes with my GF all the time. I find it hilarious but my GF is honestly convinced that it's the horse's duty to stand still, be mounted and do her bidding like a good little slave.

IMO if the horse really likes it so much, she would come to her. Horse riders should have a little more respect for their animals instead of pretending to care.

Not big on horses, though I did ride a horse carriage when I was 12 or so. It was fun.

Poor Christopher got shot, though.

Horses deserve at the very least to not have to run those ghastly races like Ascot.

When we were kids, Ridg3 and myself plus a few others would tempt horses to chase after us as we hid in a maze of bushes to escape their galloping fury.

Good times.

Right, I came on this thread expecting something at the total end of the spectrum. I'm glad I didn't.

I used to ride horses at a very young age and had a beautiful horse that belonged exclusively to me (it was at a horse riding club, albeit not a very popular one.) I loved it, although now, I think the same way as you do now. Horses should not be subjugated to do tricks for us.

I want horses to run wild... that's where they belong....

I think if you can befriend a horse, and 'tame' it, yet still be able to let it run free in the wild without it disappearing... Then you've earned the right to ride it.. Dunno if that's possible though.

Back where I used to ride they had a horse that didn't do much, he didn't mind if you tried to ride him, but he wouldn't do much after that. They got around that by using him as the beginner horse. He was my main horse even though I did have to move to another to do the more advanced stuff. After the rides they would cool them off with a hose and just let them run around and do whatever they want.

Horses are fucking huge.

I prefer ostriches. I would love to ride an ostrich. It's the closest thing to riding a dinosaur. Technically it is.

If a horse horse is unhappy with a person on it's back it is capable of bucking them off.

Nope ... you're not alone. Any joke gets old after the first few times.

Hm... I wonder how one can earn an animals respect and friendship. I'd love for example to befriend a crow. They seem to be smart enough to be able to form friendships.

Would it be possible to train a horse through a system of rewards, trust and friendship, rather than captivity and whips?

I'd like to have a familiar. Ever since I played Baldur's Gate II again I want to pet a Pseudo-dragon.

Plus the practical advantages of having a telepathic servant.

In fact, this thread is now about familiars. What would you have? I want a raven; something fast, small and easy to move around but also fairly intellegent.
