Oddworld Book Publications

I guess this thread spawns from that humourous thread declaring that a certain somebody "I GOT A BOOK". Perhaps it should belong there, though that seems to be the current thread for the Oddworld Inhabitants First Ten Years.

So here's my proposal for the forums and Lorne if he's spying.

:
Same here. XD

I think oddworld should come out with a story book.
Although Slag's initial statement's a little ambitious, if not a mite bland, it has some merit.
I'd quite like a Lorne Lanning book publication in the near future; something from Oddworld, something in-verse with the stories Oddworld tells, but in the vein of something 'non-fiction'.

Perhaps a Glukkon endorsed tourist guide to the main cities of Mudos.
Or a parody of Darwin's On the Origin of Species, along the lines of 'Odd, the Origin of Species' where we get to see Oddworldian theories about how things came to be and family trees connecting species together.

For those familiar with Terry Pratchet's Discworld and Joss Whedon's Firefly, perhaps somewhat in the vein of the Streetmap of Ankh-Morpork, or the Nanny Ogg's Cookbook; or along the lines of the bonus material from Firefly & Serenity, like the foil map of the 'Verse or the banknotes in the form of 'Verse credits.

I guess it all depends on whether such projects would make enough money, which is unlikely at present, but in the future, possible? Also upon whether Lorne would be up to it, as a creative director, I'm sure he's somewhat nifty with editorial writing and would know how to slot together some ideas of his into a coherent publication. Concept art of course, depends, yet I'm sure there'd be a way if he had something to write about.

What are your opinions?

I'd like to see Industrialist propaganda. It would all be Gukkons looking into the upper-right distance while trains rumble overhead.

I think they should simply come up with a novel of the oddworld story from start to finish. The oddworld quintology, in books! A five book series. Anyone? amirite? amirite?

I think it would work that way too, and they could continue the quintology by books, doesn't have to be all games y'know.

Precisely.

Also, I have to test this real quick, if you don't mind.

I've often wondered how a real life Oddworld Encyclopaedia might be published, but I've only ever come to the conclusion that it would have to come in the form of richly-illustrated in-universe material. What that might cause it to lack in objective accuracy and comprehensiveness would be made up for by the deep insight into how different races and classes try to influence and understand their world and each other. Vykkers' zoographies and lab notes, industrial reports and memos, taskmaster and slave handbooks, rebel propaganda, academic rubbings of native carvings, travellers' storystones. I'm salivating.

Books are great especially if it were issues of graphic novels or comics of such. Plus considering the medium, all you need is a writer and editor, Illustrators, Pencilers, inkers, and colorists to produce the art, and a book publishing company. With Lorne and his track record that should be easy or he can just publish them himself. I can see many issues coming out on an annual basis and Lorne attending Comic Conventions signing his graphic novels which means he could come to Philadelphia where I live and attend the national comic con that goes on here. If he did that That would give me a chance to meet him.

Besides I think books of all mediums is the best form of media because it allows the reader to imagine what these imaginary worlds are like even if there are graphics. You make it your own. Besides you ever here the term the movie adaptation of books are never as good as the book itself. That is very true in the world of multi media. Movies and video games are never as good as a simple book or story. Good example Lord of the Rings, the movies were awesome and very close to the how the books were but still the books are a lot better and more in depth. What I am saying is with books your not limited to technology constraints where you have to take stuff out like Munch. Its all there written in the text and shown in the graphics. Books and graphic novels will always be supreme over all media.

I think graphic novels might work. But I'm not sure I wan the story in book format. As much as I want to know the oddworld story it has always been associated with stunning art and beautiful pictures. I'm not sure I want the story without the art.

I'm incredibly glad to have sparked your imagination Max.
They are indeed some impressive suggestions.

I thought I'd be shot down for suggesting such a thing, but we've amassed a collection of decent proposals.

I'm with you on the graphic novel side of things. The story without the art would be less appealing; in the Tank Girl series, after a while of publishing comics and graphic novels eventually the franchise led to a few novel publications. But I suppose that is different on the grounds Tank Girl always was a comic franchise, and the novels were the groundbreaking move, opposed to this being the videogames and then graphic novels and then novels.

Lorne's 'track record' for anything to be produced annually is, to be honest, somewhat of a joke. It takes Joss Whedon half a bloody decade to get a few Firefly/Serenity graphic novels published, and they weren't all that innovative. But Lorne's far less predictable than Whedon.. so you never know.

You should write it Max, and then submit it to Lorne, there's plenty of artist like BM and you seem to have the ideas. DO IT DO IT DO IT!

Oh! So not so much a sparking of your imagination, but a reignition of the potential past ideas?

Glad to have been of service either way.

We're at such a crucial point in Oddworld's history, the reigniting of the franchise could result in many great things other than games.

I would also like more art books, I want ALL of their concept art.

Maybe they could incorporate that game about the albino slig that never released into a storybook.

Make sure you notify us when that Story book is written -formal greeting to admin here-. I want to read it, if I knew how to read!

There are tons of stories that still need to be told, I'd love to hear that story too.

I believe he means all of the concept art from the games they already did in the book.

In the book, and I quote, But not really, Im just remembering this off the top of my head

I wish we could include all of the art we made, but Ten pound books aren't very popular today
