The Mediaz

I'm kind of a news junkie and the problem (either real or just supposed) of biased media has been bugging me for some time now. In the states, everyone seems to be scared of the dreaded Liberal Media, but I really don't see too much bias on that end what with Fox and CNN to an extent. I generally stick to MSNBC, CNN, and a few other miscellaneous sources. What news do you look out for? Which sources are biased and which ones aren't? What's you general opinion of the media these days?

Basically, a general discussion about the media.

The media are generaly total pigs, they are bias assholes in the UK. From what i've seen they don't carE who they offend, who they ruin or who they breach the private matters of.

GODAMMIT!

In the UK there is BBC news and ITV news and that's about it unless you have Sky or Virgin Media so there's not much choice.

I think the media are a bunch of tossers. They exaggerate and make things up to make stories bigger and more "entertaining".

CNN is fairly unbiased. MSNBC on the other hand, is certainly the "liberal media". Fox News is either the most evil obfuscator of truth in the world, or they are an extremely talented comedy troupe.

MSNBC definately caters to the liberal audience. Hardball seems neutral though. I wouldn't watch it if I didn't enjoy the ranting of Keith Olberman and Rachel Maddow so much. XD

Also, who thinks the Daily Show is actually a good news source. I mean really, you get the gist of the world events and he typically has some pretty awesome guests.

In my Critical Thinking lessons at A-level the teacher used to make a note of bringing in the Daily Mail every week so we could poke holes in it .

I still to the Times, and various internet sources.

Apparently The Times and The Daily Telegraph are the most sold newspapers in Britain, but they are biased, or at least the Telegraph is.

Yeah, she used to call that the Daily Torygraph.

I'm not parroting her without good merit mind, I did get an A on my course because of her .

I've yet to get my Critical Thinking results back, but we did nothing nearly as fun.

I despise the media and find that it is impossible to find a truly impartial, unbiased press. Problem is you need a free press to have a democracy. As I said on someone's blog on here somewhere, the media is both the greatest argument against and greatest benefit of democracy.

It's surprisingly good at getting the meat of the news stories it covers but you really wouldn't want to depend on it - they mostly only cover one or two stories a night before shifting off to some scripted 'Special Report' or celebrity interview.

The TV news in Australia is pretty much unbiased but tends to be rather shallow and parochial in viewpoint. Far too much of what's covered is soft news and not enough of what's going on in the rest of the world. On the other hand, the newspapers are pretty reasonable, as long as you avoid the Murdoch press.

If you live in Brisbane you can't really read anything that's not Murdoch's.

You should see our regional TV news, it's mostly about how kids have planted some plants to get the neighbourhood together, or that some semi-famous person has come to a community centre to join in some fun.

I don't really watch foreign news channels so I wouldn't know. Dutch news is pretty unbiased as far as I can tell. They just report the facts without any bullshit around it. If they don't know something they just say so and the phrase 'let's not speculate on that' comes by plenty of times.

I like to read Private Eye Magazine. It's more political-joke orientated, but there's some news in there, and they seem alright to me.
